Lenovo Legion Go 2

What Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais Said About Lenovo’s Handhelds—and Why “Xbox” Is Confusing

Lenovo’s Legion Go, Microsoft’s Xbox interface, ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and Valve’s SteamOS are connected—but they are not one product. Here is what is known and what buyers should check.

Lenovo’s Legion Go handhelds, Microsoft’s Xbox interface for Windows, ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and Valve-supported SteamOS are related parts of the handheld-PC story, but they are not one “Lenovo Xbox” product. The available coverage identifies Valve developer and Steam Deck designer Pierre-Loup Griffais as a participant in the broader discussion; it does not provide a verifiable transcript or exact quote establishing what he said about a specific Lenovo presentation. What is clear is that Lenovo has pursued distinct Windows and SteamOS versions of the Legion Go 2, while Microsoft’s Xbox-oriented interface is a Windows software experience.

What did Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais say?

Coverage associates Pierre-Loup Griffais, a Valve developer and Steam Deck designer, with a handheld-focused presentation involving Lenovo and Microsoft Xbox executive Jason Ronald. A report previewing that event described their planned CES appearance: Windows Central’s coverage of the CES appearance.

The available material does not establish a full presentation transcript, an exact quotation from Griffais about Lenovo’s Xbox-related hardware, or a definitive account of which specific comments were made. It would therefore be misleading to put words in his mouth or treat a headline’s use of “executive” as a confirmed company-wide title. The safer description is Valve developer or Steam Deck designer.

Which Lenovo handheld is involved?

The relevant Lenovo family is Legion Go, especially the Legion Go 2. Lenovo’s hardware and the operating system installed on it need to be distinguished: the Windows and SteamOS versions offer different software experiences, even when they belong to the same product line. Coverage of the SteamOS model describes it as a Lenovo device developed with Valve’s cooperation, not an Xbox console: Engadget’s CES announcement report.

Reports around CES 2026 said the SteamOS model was expected in June 2026. One report put timing at that month, while coverage discussed prices around $1,100–$1,200 for premium configurations; those figures are not universal prices and depend on configuration and market. Check Lenovo or an authorized seller for the current model, availability and price. See Windows Central’s reported timing and PC Gamer’s CES 2026 roundup.

Why “Lenovo’s Xbox handheld” can mean different things

The Xbox name refers to two different things in this conversation: a hardware family and a software experience. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS/Microsoft-branded handhelds, not Lenovo Legion Go devices. A Windows-based Lenovo handheld, meanwhile, can be discussed in connection with Microsoft’s Xbox-oriented full-screen interface without becoming an Xbox console. The ROG Xbox Ally entry identifies the ASUS product family; for the Legion Go 2 and Xbox Ally distinction, see Windows Central’s comparison.

Microsoft’s Xbox Full-Screen Experience is a controller-friendly interface for Windows gaming devices. Reporting in March 2026 described its expansion beyond the initial Xbox-branded handheld context to more Windows PCs: Ars Technica’s rollout coverage. That does not mean every Lenovo model receives the feature at the same time, or that a SteamOS Legion Go 2 runs the Windows interface. Availability depends on the specific Windows device and rollout.

Two platform strategies, not one shared operating system

Lenovo can make hardware for different software ecosystems. Valve’s approach extends SteamOS beyond its own Steam Deck, while Microsoft’s approach brings an Xbox-branded, controller-first layer to Windows devices. Both may make handheld PC gaming feel more console-like, but they retain different libraries, compatibility and maintenance trade-offs.

Consideration SteamOS Legion Go 2 Windows handheld with Xbox interface
Operating system SteamOS, a Linux-based system using Proton to run many Windows games Windows, with an Xbox-oriented full-screen interface
Primary game access Steam library and Steam features Xbox services and PC storefronts or launchers supported on Windows
PC Game Pass Not equivalent to native Windows PC Game Pass access Native Windows route to PC Game Pass; check the device and plan
Game compatibility Varies by title; some games and anti-cheat systems may not work Broader Windows compatibility, though individual games and device behavior still vary
Handheld interface SteamOS is centered on Steam and controller use Xbox full-screen interface is intended to make Windows more controller-friendly
Desktop and general software Desktop use is possible, with Linux compatibility and workflow differences Windows applications and desktop workflows are available

Neither interface erases its operating system’s limitations. SteamOS is compelling for a Steam-centered library, but launchers, software and anti-cheat support can vary. Windows offers broader access to Windows applications and services, while its Xbox interface does not make desktop, driver, update or launcher friction disappear. Comparisons of the experiences have also emphasized that they are meaningfully different rather than simple cosmetic alternatives: Windows Central’s comparison.

Why Valve would support SteamOS on Lenovo hardware

Lenovo’s SteamOS model shows Valve is willing to work with a manufacturer beyond its own Steam Deck line. A reasonable strategic reading is that third-party devices can put SteamOS and the Steam store in front of more players without Valve having to make every handheld itself. Other manufacturers can target different screens, controls, performance levels and price points.

  • Enhanced Connectivity & Cooling: AMD Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Legion Coldfront cooling, and two USB4 40Gbps ports for fast data transfer and power delivery

That arrangement also has a trade-off: Valve gives up some of the direct hardware-and-software control it has with Steam Deck. The Lenovo collaboration is evidence of broader hardware participation, but it does not by itself prove an unrestricted SteamOS licensing policy, a new Steam Deck roadmap, or a formal Valve–Microsoft partnership.

What this means for Steam Deck buyers

The Legion Go 2 SteamOS model is better understood as another SteamOS hardware option than as a Steam Deck replacement. Coverage positions it as a larger, newer and more premium device, while Steam Deck’s appeal includes Valve’s mature integration and a lower entry point in applicable markets. Exact performance, battery life and value cannot be inferred from a processor name or price alone; they depend on the configuration and use case. Engadget’s report discusses the model’s pricing context.

Before buying, compare the exact memory, storage, screen and processor configuration rather than matching a base Steam Deck against a premium Legion Go. Also consider device size and weight, since a larger display or higher-power components can affect portability and battery demands. For Steam Deck’s live configurations and pricing, consult Valve’s Steam Deck store page; for Lenovo’s current Legion Go models, use Lenovo’s Legion Go portal.

How to choose between SteamOS and Windows

  • Choose SteamOS if: most of your games are on Steam and you value a controller-first, console-like environment.
  • Favor Windows if: PC Game Pass, Windows-only launchers, general Windows applications or particular compatibility requirements matter most.
  • Check specific games first: SteamOS support varies, especially for some anti-cheat systems; Windows is broader, not a guarantee of flawless handheld behavior.
  • Verify the exact model: confirm operating system, configuration, region, firmware and current software rollout. Do not assume a feature announced for Windows handhelds also applies to a SteamOS model.

Microsoft’s strategy is also explicitly about making Windows handhelds feel more like Xbox. Phil Spencer has discussed that ambition in comments reported by PC Gamer. That aspiration is separate from Valve’s work with Lenovo on SteamOS: one company is extending Xbox’s software identity across Windows devices, while the other is bringing its Steam-focused system to hardware it does not manufacture.
