How to Add SSD Storage to an Xbox: Series X|S and Xbox One

Xbox Series X|S owners can play optimized games from a compatible expansion card; a USB SSD is best for storing games and playing many older titles. Xbox One owners can add USB storage directly.

The right way to add SSD storage depends on your Xbox. On Xbox Series X|S, an officially licensed Storage Expansion Card adds space you can use to play Series X|S-optimized games directly. A regular USB SSD can store those games, but most must be moved to the console’s internal storage or an expansion card before they will run. On Xbox One, a USB SSD is the straightforward external-storage upgrade.

First, identify your Xbox

Console Best storage choice Can Series X|S-optimized games run from it?
Xbox Series X Expansion card for added playable storage; USB SSD or HDD for a less expensive library or archive From internal storage or a compatible expansion card; generally not from USB
Xbox Series S Same as Series X From internal storage or a compatible expansion card; generally not from USB
Xbox One X External USB SSD or HDD Not applicable; Xbox One games can run from USB storage
Xbox One S External USB SSD or HDD Not applicable; Xbox One games can run from USB storage
Original Xbox One External USB SSD or HDD Not applicable; Xbox One games can run from USB storage

“Optimized for Series X|S” identifies a version designed for those consoles. Xbox One versions and backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox games are different cases. Some cross-generation games offer more than one version or use Smart Delivery, so check the specific title’s version and requirements rather than assuming every game behaves alike.

Choose the right kind of storage

Xbox Storage Expansion Card

This is a dedicated card that plugs into the Storage Expansion port on the back of Series X|S consoles. Officially licensed choices include the Seagate Storage Expansion Card and WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card. They are designed to work with the Xbox storage architecture, letting you install and play Series X|S games from the added storage. See Microsoft’s Seagate card overview and the manufacturers’ product information.

Seagate lists 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB models in its support material. WD’s C50 data sheet identifies capacities up to 2 TB. Availability and capacity can vary by product and region.

External USB SSD

A portable USB SSD is a separate external drive, not an expansion card. On Series X|S, it can hold games, including Series X|S games for storage, but most Series-optimized titles must be moved to internal storage or a compatible expansion card to play. It can run many Xbox One and backward-compatible games directly. It is useful if you want a library of games ready to transfer without downloading them again.

External USB HDD

A mechanical hard drive can offer more capacity for the money and is suitable for an archive or for many Xbox One and backward-compatible games. It is generally slower than an SSD for transfers and loading. Neither a USB SSD’s speed nor a high advertised USB specification turns it into an expansion card.

Generic internal NVMe drives are not a plug-in upgrade

A bare M.2 NVMe SSD cannot be inserted into the Series X|S expansion port. Opening an Xbox to replace internal storage is a model-specific repair involving disassembly, drive preparation, and system recovery—not the normal consumer storage upgrade. For most owners, use an external USB drive or, on Series X|S, a compatible expansion card.

Which option should you buy?

  • Choose an expansion card if you want to install and play Series X|S games from the added storage without moving them first. Seagate and WD_BLACK are licensed options; compare capacity, availability, and current vendor terms.
  • Choose a USB SSD if you need a faster, quieter game library or archive, play many older games, or are willing to move Series X|S games to playable storage when needed.
  • Choose a USB HDD if capacity per dollar matters most and you mainly want long-term storage or space for Xbox One and backward-compatible games.

Advertised capacity is not the same as free usable space after formatting and system overhead, and game sizes vary widely. Do not estimate a drive’s value by assuming a fixed number of games will fit.

Install an expansion card on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Remove the card’s protective cover.
  2. Locate the dedicated Storage Expansion port on the rear of the console. Do not use a USB port for the card.
  3. Insert the card straight into the port and press gently until it is seated. Do not force it.
  4. Turn on the console if it was off. The card should be detected and configured automatically; Seagate’s installation instructions describe this plug-in setup.
  5. Open Settings > System > Storage devices (or the equivalent storage screen) and confirm the card appears.
  6. If you want new games to install there by default, open the storage or installation-location controls and select the card as the default destination if that option is available.

Adding a card does not necessarily change the installation destination for every game automatically. Xbox may choose another destination when a title requires a particular storage class. Menu labels can change with system updates; look for storage devices and installation locations if the path differs.

Connect and format a USB SSD or HDD

For game storage on Series X|S, Seagate specifies a drive of at least 128 GB connected by USB 3.0 or later. Drives that do not meet the requirements may be offered only for media use. Xbox One owners should check their console’s on-screen requirements as well.

  1. Connect the drive directly to an Xbox USB port using a data-capable USB 3.0-or-newer connection.
  2. Wait for the console’s storage prompt. Choose Use for games, not media storage, if you want to install games on it.
  3. Name the drive if prompted, then select Format storage device.
  4. Read the warning and confirm only if you have backed up anything you need: formatting erases the drive.
  5. Choose whether to keep existing installation locations or change them. If asked whether the drive will stay with this console or be used with multiple consoles, select the option that matches how you intend to use it.
  6. Confirm the drive under Settings > System > Storage devices.

SanDisk’s Xbox setup instructions describe the Use for Games, naming, formatting, and installation-behavior prompts. Formatting configures a drive for Xbox game storage, so do not proceed while files you need exist only on that drive.

Which games can run from each drive?

Game type USB SSD or HDD on Series X|S Expansion card on Series X|S
Series X|S-optimized games Generally can be stored, but most must be moved to internal storage or an expansion card to play Can generally be stored and played directly
Xbox One games Many can be stored and played directly Can generally be stored and played directly
Xbox 360 or original Xbox backward-compatible games Generally can be stored and played directly when supported by the console Can generally be stored and played directly
Media files Can be used for media if configured appropriately Not its intended use

“Store” and “play” are different capabilities. Xbox’s storage architecture overview explains the expansion card and USB options; Seagate describes USB storage as a library for games that need to be moved to storage designed for Series X|S performance. Exact behavior can depend on the game and installed version, so use the console’s game-management screen if a title’s requirement is unclear.

Move a Series X|S game from USB to playable storage

  1. Open My games & apps.
  2. Highlight the game and press the controller’s Menu button.
  3. Choose Manage game and add-ons, then select the game.
  4. Choose Move or copy.
  5. Select the internal SSD or compatible expansion card as the destination, then start the transfer.

Moving a stored game is usually preferable to deleting and redownloading it, especially when the game is large or your internet connection has a data cap. Labels may shift with system updates; look for the game’s manage, move, or copy controls.

Expand storage on Xbox One

Connect an external USB SSD or HDD, accept the console’s prompt to use it for games, and format it after backing up any files you need. Xbox One games can generally be installed and played from external USB game storage. An SSD may make loading or transfers feel quicker than a mechanical drive, but the improvement depends on the console, game, drive, and connection; it does not give an Xbox One Series X|S features.

Replacing an Xbox One’s internal drive is a more involved, model-specific repair—not the recommended beginner upgrade. External USB storage is simpler and avoids opening the console.

SSD versus HDD for Xbox

Factor USB SSD USB HDD
Transfers and loading Generally faster than a mechanical HDD, though results depend on drive, console, game, and connection Generally slower
Capacity per dollar Usually less capacity for the same spend Usually better for inexpensive bulk storage
Noise and portability No moving mechanical parts; convenient for a portable library Contains moving parts and may be less convenient to move
Series X|S game launch from USB Most optimized games still need internal or expansion-card storage Same limitation
Good fit Frequent transfers, quieter use, or an archive you access often Large archive or older-game library where cost and capacity matter most

Troubleshoot storage problems

The Xbox does not detect the USB drive

  • Connect it directly to the console rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • Check that the cable supports data, the drive meets the capacity and USB requirements, and the drive has enough power.
  • Try reconnecting the drive and checking Settings > System > Storage devices. Connection timing or power behavior can affect detection, as noted in Seagate’s USB-drive guidance.

The console asks to format the drive

Cancel if the drive contains files you need. Back them up elsewhere, reconnect the drive, and format it only after confirming that the correct drive is selected. Formatting erases its contents.

  • Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
  • Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
  • Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
  • Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.

The drive appears only as media storage

Check whether it meets the game-storage capacity and USB requirements, whether you chose Use for games during setup, and whether the connection or power supply is causing a compatibility problem.

A Series X|S game will not launch from USB

The USB drive may be working correctly: most Series-optimized games need internal storage or a compatible expansion card to run. Use Manage game and add-ons > Move or copy to move the game to one of those destinations.

The expansion card is not detected

  • Remove its cover, then reseat it in the dedicated rear expansion port without forcing it.
  • Restart the console and check for a system update.
  • Confirm it appears in the storage settings and that it is a compatible card.
  • If it remains undetected, contact the card maker about support or warranty service.

Other ways to free or add space

  • Uninstall games you can download again later.
  • Use network transfer from another Xbox on the same network when available.
  • Keep only the games you are currently playing installed.
  • Consider cloud gaming where the title, service, and region support it.
  • Use a USB HDD for an inexpensive archive or a USB SSD for faster transfers; choose an expansion card only when direct Series X|S game play from added storage matters.

Storage expansion is not automatically a complete backup. Xbox cloud saves and licenses are managed through the Xbox account ecosystem; locally stored media and other files may need separate backup planning.
