Xbox error 0x8007013d usually appears when a game installation, update, download, or launch transaction cannot finish. It is commonly associated with a network or installation-state problem, but the code does not prove that your console is defective or that the game is corrupt. Start with service and power checks, then work through network state, storage, offline disc installation, and finally a reset that keeps games and apps.
These steps apply to Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. Menu wording can vary with system software and language; use the closest equivalent option.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Note what is failing and when. That determines which method is most useful and helps you avoid deleting a large game unnecessarily.
| Symptom | Test first |
|---|---|
| Every game or download fails | Xbox service status, router, and console network |
| One digital game fails | Free space, installation state, account/licensing state, and storage location |
| One disc game fails | Disc readability and an offline base-game installation |
| The error appears during an update | Download queue, network path, and available storage |
| Games launch but updates fail | Xbox services, DNS, router, and storage |
- Open Settings > General > Network settings. Does Test network connection succeed?
- Run Test multiplayer connection and note any NAT or service warning.
- Check available internal and external storage.
- Record whether the title is on an external drive.
- Check whether the issue began after a console, router, or game update.
Microsoft lists the code at its Xbox error-code page, but the page does not establish one cause for every occurrence.

1. Check Xbox services, then restart the router and console
Visit Xbox Support and the Xbox error-code search before changing settings. An outage or authentication problem cannot be repaired by reinstalling a game.
- Cancel the failed installation or update if it is still queued.
- Shut down the Xbox completely.
- Turn off the modem or router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Restart the modem or router and wait until internet access returns.
- Turn on the Xbox and retry the operation.
This low-risk sequence preserves games and saves and can clear a temporary download, authentication, or connection state. A normal controller restart may not clear every transient state; if the console is frozen or repeats the error, perform a full power cycle rather than jumping directly to a factory reset. Microsoft community guidance also recommends restarting network equipment and power-cycling before more destructive recovery steps: Microsoft Community troubleshooting guidance.
2. Clear the alternate MAC address
A stale or manually configured alternate MAC address can leave the console in an unhelpful network state. Clearing it removes that alternate address and makes the Xbox establish its connection again; it does not alter the console’s physical network hardware.

Some older instructions call this a “backup MAC address,” while current Xbox menus generally say “Alternate MAC address.” Bethesda’s explanation of the operation is available at Bethesda Support.

If you never configured an alternate address, clearing it may have no visible effect beyond restarting the console. That is normal and does not indicate hardware damage.
3. Test the connection and use a different network path
A console can report that it is connected while Xbox services, NAT traversal, DNS resolution, or the particular download path is still failing.

- Go to Settings > General > Network settings.
- Run Test network connection.
- Run Test multiplayer connection and record NAT or service errors.
- If possible, connect the Xbox by Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, or move it closer to the router.
- As a temporary diagnostic, test a mobile hotspot if the download size and data plan make that practical.
- Retry the installation or update.
Try manual DNS only as a diagnostic
If automatic DNS appears to be failing, open Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings, choose Manual, and enter:
- Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
- Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
These are Google Public DNS addresses. Community troubleshooting examples mention them, but they are not an Xbox-confirmed fix for 0x8007013d and will not resolve an outage, bad disc, damaged installation, insufficient storage, or failing drive. Return DNS to Automatic if this test changes nothing. See the network examples in Microsoft Community guidance.
Do not begin with port forwarding. Hotel, school, office, apartment, and other managed networks may block Xbox services; use another connection or ask the network administrator.

4. Install or update the game offline when appropriate
Use this method mainly when one physical-disc game fails, the installation stops at the same point, and other online Xbox functions work. It is not a universal fix and does not suit every digital-only title or game that requires online authentication or a day-one update.
For a game on disc
- Cancel the stalled installation.
- Remove the disc.
- Uninstall the incomplete local installation if the console allows it.
- Open Settings > General > Network settings > Go offline.
- Insert the disc and let the base game install without its online update.
- After the base installation completes, reconnect the Xbox.
- Check for and install the game’s update.
Some discs contain little or no usable base content, and some titles still require online authentication, so this sequence may not apply. Microsoft’s separate guidance for installations that stop at zero is at Xbox Support.
For a digital game
- Pause other downloads and verify free storage.
- Retry only after the service, power, and network checks above.
- If the title is on an external drive, test installing or moving it to the internal drive.
- Treat an internal-drive test as a diagnostic, not proof that the external drive caused the error.
5. Reset the Xbox while keeping games and apps
Reserve this step for system-wide failures, repeated problems across games and apps, or broader instability that remains after network and power-cycle checks.

- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Select System > Console info.
- Choose Reset console.
- Select Reset and keep my games & apps.
- Complete the prompts, sign in again, and retry the installation.
This option refreshes system software while preserving installed games and apps, but it still removes accounts and system settings. You may need to sign in again, resynchronize cloud saves, and download updates. It cannot repair a defective drive, overheating console, unreadable disc, or persistent hardware fault. Microsoft community reset guidance is included in this support discussion. Do not choose Reset and remove everything unless you understand that it removes local accounts, games, apps, and settings and have synchronized relevant saves.
Choose the next step by symptom
Only one game fails
Check storage, cancel and retry, test internal versus external storage, and use the offline disc sequence if it is a physical copy. Reinstall that title only after these checks; a single-title failure can indicate local data, a disc, or a storage-path issue rather than an Xbox-wide network failure.
Every game or app fails
Prioritize service status, a router and console power cycle, alternate-MAC clearing, network tests on another connection, and then Reset and keep my games & apps.
The error appears during an update
Check whether the base game launches offline, pause other downloads, verify free space, test Ethernet, and use an offline base-disc installation when physical media supports it.
The error appears when launching an installed game
Confirm that the console is online and signed into the correct account, check service status, verify the game is on a readable drive, and launch another title. If only one game fails, repair or reinstall that title before resetting the console.
If 0x8007013d still appears
- Try another network and another game.
- Remove or test external storage and inspect its USB connection and power.
- Check that the disc is clean and readable.
- Confirm adequate internal free space.
- Contact Xbox Support with your console model, game title, disc or digital edition, the exact point of failure, network-test results, and whether other games are affected.
Do not infer a defective Xbox until the problem persists across networks, titles, storage locations, and the non-destructive system reset. Xbox app and Windows installation failures follow a separate path; use Xbox Support’s PC installation guidance instead of applying these console menu steps.
