Best capture cards for recording and streaming gameplay (2026 guide)

The best capture card depends on your recording target and display signal. This guide compares Elgato 4K S and 4K Pro, AVerMedia GC553G2, Genki ShadowCast and discontinued HD60 X, with OBS setup and troubleshooting.

The best capture card depends on two different signals: what reaches your monitor and what reaches your recording computer. For most new console creators, the Elgato Game Capture 4K S is the strongest external starting point because it combines 4K60 capture, high-refresh passthrough and Windows, Mac and iPad support. Desktop dual-PC users should consider the PCIe Elgato Game Capture 4K Pro. If you need HDMI 2.1 passthrough in an external USB box, compare AVerMedia’s Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 (GC553G2). Do not buy on a “4K” or “HDMI 2.1” label alone: capture resolution, passthrough, HDR and VRR are separate capabilities.

The best capture cards at a glance

Category Recommendation Capture and connection Passthrough and caveats Price or status
Best overall external Elgato Game Capture 4K S Up to 4K60 capture; USB-C/UVC; Windows, Mac and iPad High-frame-rate passthrough; HDR capture is qualified for Windows and specific modes US$159.99 listed August 18, 2026
Best internal PCIe Elgato Game Capture 4K Pro Up to 4K60 capture; PCIe 2.0 x4 HDMI 2.1 passthrough, including high-refresh modes in selected formats Price not stated; desktop installation required
Best HDMI 2.1 USB alternative AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 / GC553G2 External USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10Gbps); mode limits vary High-refresh HDMI 2.1 passthrough; read the regional datasheet rather than assuming every mode is captured US$299.99 MSRP appears in the datasheet; verify current regional price
Compact budget direction Genki ShadowCast range Small USB capture products for simple or travel setups Current model’s capture rate, passthrough and handheld behavior must be checked on Genki’s live listing Current official model, price and availability were not reliably established; verify at Genki
Existing-stock value Elgato HD60 X Up to 4K30 capture and 1080p60 capture modes 4K60 passthrough, VRR/ALLM support; not a 4K60 recorder US$179.99 displayed, but Elgato marks it discontinued
No-card alternative OBS Studio or GPU recording Direct recording of a single-PC game Cannot capture a separate HDMI source or create a dual-PC path Usually free

Specifications are separated deliberately: a card can pass 4K120 to a display while sending only 4K60, 1440p60 or 1080p60 to the computer.

What a capture card does

A capture card receives HDMI video and audio, forwards the signal to a television or monitor, and exposes a video source to software such as OBS. A typical chain is console HDMI output → card HDMI input; card HDMI output → display; card USB or PCIe connection → computer.

You do not normally need one for ordinary single-PC gameplay: OBS, AMD Adrenalin, Nvidia App or another GPU recorder can capture the game directly. A card becomes useful for consoles, handhelds, cameras, a dual-PC stream, or any source that desktop software cannot see. Encrypted HDMI sources, including many commercial streaming services, are not legitimate capture targets, and HDCP can intentionally produce a black screen.

Who needs one?

  • Single-PC gamer: Start with software capture unless you need a separate HDMI source.
  • Console player: Use an external card with passthrough so you play on the display rather than a delayed software preview.
  • Dual-PC streamer: Choose a PCIe card or a 10Gbps USB model after confirming the gaming and streaming PCs’ ports.
  • Handheld or travel creator: Favor compact USB/UVC hardware, while checking whether the handheld outputs video over USB-C or requires a dock.
  • Competitive player: Prioritize passthrough refresh rate, VRR, HDR and cable compatibility over the card’s headline recording number.
  • Video editor: Favor stable 4K60 capture, a workable HDR pipeline, clean audio and enough storage.
  • Camera user: Confirm clean HDMI output, supported frame rate, audio behavior and whether the card is designed for camera input.

External USB versus internal PCIe

External USB

USB cards work with laptops and desktops, travel easily and usually need no case installation. They can also support Mac and iPad workflows; the 4K S is a USB-C/UVC example. Their performance depends on a genuinely fast port, a suitable cable and an uncontended USB controller. Hubs, docks, front-panel ports, shared controllers and power-management settings can cause disconnects or dropped frames. A 10Gbps device such as the GC553G2 should be connected directly to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, not an ordinary USB 3.0 hub.

Internal PCIe

PCIe cards provide a permanent desktop installation without relying on external USB bandwidth. The 4K Pro uses PCIe 2.0 x4, according to Elgato’s technical specifications. You need a compatible free slot, physical clearance and the willingness to install and troubleshoot hardware. PCIe alone does not guarantee better image quality; supported video modes and encoding still determine the result.

Resolution and frame rate: choose the recording target first

  • 1080p60: A sensible target for Twitch-style streaming, older consoles and smaller files.
  • 1440p60 or 120: Useful for PC gaming and high-refresh displays; check the exact input, passthrough and capture combination.
  • 4K30: An older or entry-level 4K option, less suitable for modern console footage.
  • 4K60: The practical target for high-quality PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 recording.
  • 4K120/144 passthrough: A display requirement, not proof of 4K120/144 recording.
  • 1080p120/240 capture: Useful for slow motion or competitive footage, but demanding on storage and encoding.

Elgato’s device comparison illustrates the trap: HD60 X can pass 4K60 but is limited to 4K30 capture, while 4K S adds 4K60 capture and high-frame-rate modes.

HDMI 2.0, HDMI 2.1, HDR and VRR

HDMI 2.1 matters when your source and display need bandwidth for 4K120/144, VRR or other modern console modes. The source, card, display, cables, firmware and software must all support the same mode. HDMI 2.1 passthrough can coexist with a lower capture limit, and VRR passthrough does not imply VRR capture.

HDR

HDR passthrough lets the display receive HDR. HDR capture sends HDR footage to the computer, but support can vary by operating system, software, resolution and frame rate. Elgato documents Windows-only HDR capture limitations for HD60 X; apply the same qualification to every competing product. Decide whether you need HDR on the monitor with SDR recordings, HDR files for editing and YouTube, or SDR tone mapping for a conventional stream. Inconsistent OBS, utility and display settings can produce washed-out or overly dark video.

VRR, ALLM and latency

VRR synchronizes refresh to frame rate; ALLM can switch a compatible display into its low-latency game mode. Play from the card’s HDMI output, not the software preview. “Zero latency” or “lag-free” generally describes the passthrough path, not every preview window or recording workflow. Elgato lists VRR and ALLM for HD60 X and low-latency play-through-preview features for 4K S, subject to a capable setup.

Recommended cards in detail

Elgato Game Capture 4K S: best overall external pick

The 4K S is the balanced choice for a new console creator who wants 4K60 recording without installing a desktop card. It is USB-C/UVC, supports Windows, Mac and iPad, and offers high-frame-rate passthrough and capture modes. Elgato lists a US price of $159.99. Buy it for PS5/PS5 Pro, Xbox Series, Switch 2 or a portable mixed-device setup when 4K60 capture matters. Skip it if you need PC-free recording, an internal card, or guaranteed HDR feature parity on Mac; verify the exact HDR combination before purchase.

Elgato Game Capture 4K Pro: premium internal choice

The 4K Pro suits a desktop or dual-PC workflow with a free PCIe slot. Elgato positions it for HDMI 2.1 passthrough, high-refresh gaming, 4K60 capture, HDR workflows and use by multiple applications. Marketing figures such as 8K60 passthrough or 240fps capture apply only to selected formats; consult the technical table. It is unnecessary for basic 1080p streaming and unsuitable for laptops.

AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 / GC553G2

The GC553G2 is the main external USB alternative for HDMI 2.1 systems. Its 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C requirement is explicit in the datasheet. The published table distinguishes capture from passthrough and varies by mode, so verify the regional specification before buying. It is a strong fit for high-refresh console or PC passthrough when your computer has the required port; it is excessive for a simple 1080p setup.

Genki ShadowCast: compact budget direction

ShadowCast products target small, simple USB capture setups and travel use. Genki’s current model, maximum capture rate, passthrough behavior, handheld compatibility, software requirements, price and support status should be verified on the official Genki site before purchase. Do not infer 1080p60, UVC behavior or display passthrough from an old retailer listing.

Is HD60 X still worth buying?

Technically, HD60 X remains capable of 1080p60 recording, 4K30 capture and 4K60 passthrough with VRR/ALLM features. However, Elgato’s US page lists it as discontinued and directs buyers to 4K S. Consider it only when remaining stock is substantially discounted and its limits exactly match your setup.

Choose by source and setup

PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X/S

For 4K60 recordings, choose 4K S, 4K Pro or a comparable mode-verified HDMI 2.1 card. If you play at 4K120 or use VRR, confirm passthrough first; do not assume the recording matches the display signal. Disable HDCP for gameplay where the console permits it.

Switch and Switch 2

Use a card that accepts the dock’s HDMI output. The required recording mode is often 1080p60 or 4K60 depending on the console and game, so a compact USB model may be sufficient if its current specification confirms that mode.

Gaming PC

Use GPU recording for a single-PC game. Add a capture card when sending video to another computer, capturing a second machine, or recording a camera or handheld.

Mac, iPad and dual-PC setups

Check feature parity rather than merely “works with Mac.” HDR, drivers and proprietary controls can be Windows-only. Dual-PC users should budget for the card, a direct high-speed connection, storage and separate microphone or chat routing.

Audio and chat routing

HDMI carries game audio, but headsets, microphones and party chat may follow a different path. Check for a 3.5mm input/output, separate software tracks and console chat compatibility. A chat-link cable or equivalent routing may be required, and incorrect monitoring can create echo or duplicate audio. Elgato advertises separate microphone commentary and AAF export in supported software; this is not a universal feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Computer, USB and storage requirements

The computer must sustain the chosen capture mode, bitrate and encoder. Confirm the operating system, RAM, CPU/GPU guidance and port speed; for example, Elgato’s HD60 X requirements specify Windows 10 or newer, macOS 11 or newer, USB 3.0 and 4GB RAM, with different CPU/GPU requirements by OS. Connect demanding USB cards directly, provide adequate PCIe clearance for internal cards, and use hardware encoding when your GPU supports the desired codec. 4K60 files are much larger than 1080p60, so free SSD capacity and write speed matter during long sessions.

How to set up a capture card in OBS

  1. Connect the console HDMI output to the card’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the card’s HDMI output to the gaming display.
  3. Connect the card to the computer with the supplied or correctly rated USB cable, or install the PCIe card.
  4. Disable HDCP on a supported console; menu labels vary by console and software version.
  5. Open OBS and add Video Capture Device as a source.
  6. Select the capture card and choose a resolution/frame rate the source and card both support.
  7. Add capture-device audio or configure separate audio capture, then check for duplicate monitoring.
  8. Choose a recording format and hardware encoder when available.
  9. Make a short test recording and inspect video, audio sync, HDR color and file size before a long session.

Troubleshooting

Black screen or no signal

  1. Confirm the source is outputting a supported resolution and refresh rate.
  2. Temporarily disable HDR, VRR and 120Hz to establish 1080p60.
  3. Confirm HDCP is disabled where permitted.
  4. Connect the display directly to the console to isolate the source.
  5. Connect the card directly to the computer, not through a hub or dock.
  6. Try the supplied or certified HDMI and USB cables.
  7. Select the correct device in OBS and close applications that may have exclusive access.
  8. Update firmware, drivers and capture software from the manufacturer.
  9. Re-enable HDR, VRR and high refresh one feature at a time.

No audio, stutter or sync problems

  • Check OBS meters and whether audio comes from the capture source or desktop audio.
  • Test headphones at the console, display and capture device separately.
  • Disable monitoring temporarily to locate echo or duplication.
  • For party chat, test dedicated chat-link or software routing.
  • Inspect a recorded clip rather than relying only on live meters.
  • If video stutters, move the card to a direct high-speed port, close bandwidth-heavy applications and lower the capture mode until the computer and storage keep up.

Do you need a capture card?

Choose OBS or GPU recording when one PC is rendering and recording the same game. Buy a capture card when you need a console, handheld, camera or second PC as an HDMI source, want passthrough to a gaming display, or require a separate dual-PC production path. Match the card to the complete signal chain—source, desired recording, passthrough, HDR/VRR, computer port, operating system, audio and storage—not to a single headline specification.
