Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Why Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Has No Documented Native HDR—and the Best Workarounds

Expedition 33 has no documented native HDR controls. Here’s how to verify what your display is doing, choose one safe PC conversion layer, or restore a clean SDR image on console.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has no documented native HDR mode or in-game HDR calibration controls in the official material published through August 18, 2026. If your TV or monitor switches into HDR and the picture looks gray, clipped or excessively bright, the safest fix is to play in SDR. On PC, you can optionally test one conversion layer—Windows Auto HDR, NVIDIA RTX HDR, Special K HDR Retrofit or a ReShade/RenoDX setup. On PS5 and Xbox, disabling HDR for this game is the least risky workaround.

What “no HDR support” actually means

HDR branding on a display does not prove that a game is rendering native HDR. There are four different situations:

  • Native HDR: the game renders HDR scene data, uses an HDR presentation path, maps luminance to the display and composites menus and subtitles correctly.
  • System conversion: Windows or a graphics driver converts the game’s SDR output into an HDR signal.
  • Display processing: the television or monitor changes its picture mode or processes an SDR signal as HDR.
  • Undesirable HDR triggering: the display enters HDR while the game still uses SDR tone mapping. Blacks can rise, highlights clip and the whole image can look flat or over-bright.

The official Xbox listing does not advertise HDR support (Xbox game page). Sandfall’s published patch archive and patch 1.4.0 notes document graphics, frame-generation and latency changes, but do not list a native HDR mode or calibration controls (patch archive; patch 1.4.0). That establishes what is documented—not why HDR was omitted or what the game’s internal renderer does.

Player discussions report no HDR menu on PC and inconsistent HDR behavior on consoles (Steam discussion; Reddit discussion). These reports help identify symptoms, but they are not an official diagnosis.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Why a visually advanced game can ship without HDR

This explanation is technical inference, not a statement from Sandfall. A proper HDR implementation needs more than an “HDR on” flag:

  • An HDR-capable swap chain and presentation path.
  • Scene-referred luminance values and tone mapping designed for HDR output.
  • Paper-white, peak-brightness and black-level calibration.
  • HDR-aware composition for HUD elements, menus, subtitles and video.
  • Separate testing across PC, PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox display pipelines.

Microsoft’s DirectX documentation describes HDR output as an appropriate Windows/DirectX presentation path connected to an HDR-capable display; simply owning an HDR screen does not make an SDR game native HDR (Microsoft DirectX HDR background). Teams also have to balance performance, certification, stability and post-launch content. Unreal Engine features do not guarantee that every game has a finished, calibrated HDR mode.

Establish a clean SDR baseline first

  1. Confirm that the display supports HDR10 and is connected through a suitable HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt path.
  2. On Windows, open Settings → System → Display, select the gaming display and inspect its HDR section. Microsoft’s setup guidance is available at What is HDR in Windows?.
  3. Turn Use HDR off, select the display’s normal SDR picture mode and launch the game.
  4. Adjust the game’s brightness and contrast controls, if available, and tune the display’s SDR profile instead of forcing HDR.
  5. Close the game completely before switching to another method. Compare every workaround with this unmodified SDR image.

If SDR looks correct, it is a valid final solution: it is the game’s predictable shipped presentation, with no injection, duplicated tone mapping or overlay conflicts.

Choose the least invasive workaround

Situation Best first choice Trade-off
PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Disable HDR for this game/session Lowest risk, but no HDR peak brightness
Windows PC with GeForce RTX 20-series or newer NVIDIA RTX HDR Simple driver conversion; requires compatible RTX hardware
Windows PC without RTX HDR Windows Auto HDR Integrated and reversible, but title-dependent
PC user wanting manual control Special K HDR Retrofit More controls, greater setup and DX12 compatibility risk
Experienced mod user ReShade with RenoDX Potentially tailored results, but version-sensitive injection
Any platform with a good SDR image Stay in SDR Most stable and closest to the shipped output

PS5 and PS5 Pro: disable HDR when the image is wrong

Some players report that the display enters HDR even though the game has no conventional HDR calibration menu. Treat this as observed player behavior, not a confirmed Sandfall diagnosis (PS5 player reports).

  1. Exit the game fully.
  2. Open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → HDR.
  3. Set HDR to Off temporarily.
  4. Relaunch the game and compare the image.
  5. If testing On When Supported, fully close and restart the game after changing the setting; do not rely on a suspended application.

If SDR removes the gray veil, raised blacks or excessive brightness, leave HDR off while playing this title. You can restore the console’s normal HDR setting for games with native HDR.

Xbox Series X|S: test with HDR10 disabled

Xbox players have also reported uncertainty about whether the game is producing genuine HDR output (Xbox player discussion). This is anecdotal evidence rather than a confirmed platform defect.

  1. Open Settings → General → TV & display options and review the console’s HDR and 4K TV details.
  2. Temporarily disable HDR10 for testing.
  3. Fully quit the game rather than resuming it from Quick Resume.
  4. Relaunch and compare the SDR image.
  5. If SDR fixes the presentation, use an SDR configuration for Expedition 33 where your display permits it, while retaining HDR for other games.

Windows Auto HDR

Auto HDR is a Windows-level SDR-to-HDR conversion. It does not add the developer-authored native HDR path that the game lacks, and Windows does not certify Expedition 33 as a supported Auto HDR title. Availability varies by Windows version, GPU and game profile.

  1. Enable Use HDR in Settings → System → Display.
  2. Run the Windows HDR Calibration app if your display and system support it. Microsoft’s settings guide is at Windows HDR settings.
  3. Launch the game and press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
  4. Look for the Auto HDR control or Windows HDR gaming settings and enable it for the game if offered.
  5. Restart the game, then compare gameplay, menus and cutscenes with the SDR baseline.

Do not enable Auto HDR at the same time as RTX HDR, Special K HDR or RenoDX.

NVIDIA RTX HDR

NVIDIA’s requirements are a GeForce RTX 20-series or newer GPU, an HDR10 display, HDR enabled in Windows, a supported driver/NVIDIA App configuration and Windows Auto HDR disabled (NVIDIA RTX HDR FAQ).

  1. Install or update the NVIDIA App and graphics driver.
  2. Enable HDR under Windows → Settings → System → Display.
  3. Disable Windows Auto HDR.
  4. Open the NVIDIA App and find the game or graphics area containing RTX HDR.
  5. Enable RTX HDR for Expedition 33 if the title is detected.
  6. Launch or restart the game and adjust intensity or brightness conservatively.
  7. Compare RTX HDR with SDR; keep whichever handles dark interiors, bright effects, HUD and subtitles better.

RTX HDR is unavailable to AMD and Intel GPU users, and its results depend on the driver, display calibration and scene. It is a conversion layer, not native game HDR.

Special K HDR Retrofit

Special K can retrofit HDR into many DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games by forcing an HDR-capable swap chain and applying its own tone mapping. It supports Windows 10 and 11, but compatibility and image quality vary; its documentation notes greater limitations under DirectX 12 (Special K HDR Retrofit).

  1. Confirm that the display supports HDR and turn HDR on in Windows.
  2. Run the game in borderless fullscreen for best compatibility.
  3. Open Special K with Ctrl + Shift + Backspace.
  4. Open HDR → HDR Setup.
  5. Choose scRGB HDR (16-bit) and restart the game.
  6. Calibrate with Special K’s HDR controls. If scRGB is unstable or unattractive, test the experimental HDR10 mode where appropriate.

Because this is injection rather than an official game feature, expect possible overlays, crashes, frame-pacing problems or incompatibility with the game’s DX12 path. Remove it before troubleshooting the unmodified game.

ReShade and RenoDX: an enthusiast route

Community guides describe using ReShade add-on support and RenoDX for a more game-specific HDR conversion. This is not an official patch and should be treated as a version-sensitive mod (official ReShade site; community RenoDX discussion).

  1. Back up the game installation and save files.
  2. Download ReShade from its official site and use an add-on-compatible build when required.
  3. Install RenoDX files that match the current game version, following the project’s current instructions.
  4. Keep Windows HDR enabled, but disable Auto HDR and RTX HDR.
  5. Launch the game and confirm that the ReShade overlay appears.
  6. Increase tone-mapping and peak-brightness values gradually.
  7. If the game fails to start, remove the injected DLLs/add-ons and restore the backup.

Do not rely on a fixed DLL name or installation folder: Steam, Epic and Xbox PC installations differ, and a game update can invalidate an injection method.

How to decide whether HDR is actually better

Judge the complete presentation, not one spectacular highlight. Check the following scenes after every change:

  • Dark interiors and night scenes for raised blacks and lost shadow detail.
  • Bright magical effects and explosions for clipping.
  • Battle HUD, inventory and menus for unreadable whites or mismatched brightness.
  • Subtitles and loading screens for incorrect luminance.
  • Pre-rendered and in-engine cutscenes for SDR/HDR mismatches.

A converter that improves highlights but makes menus or cutscenes unusable is not a complete success. Display quality matters too: a weak HDR monitor can look worse than a well-calibrated SDR mode.

Troubleshooting and recovery

Washed-out or gray image

Turn off every conversion layer, disable Windows HDR, restart the game and confirm the SDR baseline. Re-enable only one method. Also check that the display is not using an inappropriate HDR picture mode.

Excessive brightness or clipped highlights

Lower the workaround’s intensity or peak-brightness value, rerun Windows HDR Calibration, and compare with SDR. On console, disable HDR for the game.

Black screen or failed launch

  1. Close the game and launcher.
  2. Remove newly added ReShade, RenoDX or Special K DLLs and add-ons.
  3. Verify game files through Steam, Epic or the Xbox app.
  4. Reboot and launch the unmodified game.
  5. Reinstall only one tool using its current instructions.

HDR works in gameplay but not menus or cutscenes

This usually indicates different treatment of gameplay, UI or video by the conversion layer. Keep the method only if all of those elements remain readable and correctly balanced.

An HDR option disappears

Check that Windows HDR is enabled, the correct HDR display is selected, multiple-display routing is not confusing the GPU, drivers and the NVIDIA App are current, and a laptop is not running the game on its integrated GPU. Eligibility can change when the display, driver or Windows configuration changes.

Bottom line

As of August 18, 2026, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has no documented native HDR mode or in-game HDR controls in the official material reviewed. Use SDR for the most reliable result. On a compatible NVIDIA PC, RTX HDR is the simplest conversion to try; Auto HDR is the general Windows alternative; Special K offers more control; and RenoDX/ReShade is for technically confident users willing to maintain a modded setup. On PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox, disable HDR first when the display switches modes or the image looks washed out.
