The early-February 2025 outage affecting DayZ and Arma Reforger was real, but its cause remains unconfirmed. Bohemia Interactive acknowledged prolonged connectivity problems and said it was working on a resolution without publishing technical details. A group calling itself “styled squad reborn” claimed responsibility for a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, while alleged ransom and political motives were never independently verified.
The most accurate description is therefore “reportedly caused by DDoS attacks,” not “Bohemia was hacked.” No public evidence in the available reporting shows data theft, account compromise or a destructive intrusion.

What happened to DayZ and Arma Reforger?
Players began reporting failures around Friday, January 31, 2025, continuing into the first week of February. The problems reached beyond one private server: users described difficulty connecting to DayZ, Arma Reforger and related Bohemia services, including server browsing and other backend-dependent functions. Some players connected intermittently, so the outage was not identical for everyone.
Contemporary reporting documented the incident and Bohemia’s response in detail: BleepingComputer’s February 2025 account.

|---|---|
| January 31, 2025 | Connectivity complaints began appearing across Bohemia’s games and services. |
| February 3 | Bohemia acknowledged the disruption, apologized and asked players for patience. Arma Platform said it was working to restore access but did not disclose the issue or mitigation details. |
| February 3–4 | Suggested stopgaps included local battles with AI in Arma Reforger and experimental DayZ servers. Advice to restart community servers was withdrawn after reports that it caused connection loops. |
| February 4–6 | Online-service failures continued in player reports. “Styled squad reborn” claimed responsibility; ransom and political explanations circulated without independent confirmation. |
DayZ’s 1.27 update was released on February 24–25, 2025, as recorded in the update announcement and stable-release notice. Those posts do not establish that the update resolved the earlier outage or that it was an incident response.
Why did a DDoS explanation become the leading theory?
A DDoS attack overwhelms an internet-facing service with traffic or protocol requests so legitimate clients cannot reach it. A simultaneous impact across games and Bohemia-operated services can look consistent with a shared infrastructure target rather than unrelated failures on individual community servers.
Players also reported a public claim from “styled squad reborn.” The claim appeared during the disruption and matched the observed loss of access, which made it plausible to the community. It is still only a claim. No public traffic measurements, mitigation-provider confirmation, forensic report, law-enforcement statement or Bohemia incident report established that DDoS traffic caused the outage.

What Bohemia confirmed—and what it did not
- Bohemia confirmed that players were experiencing connectivity problems.
- It apologized and said teams were working on a resolution.
- It declined to identify the technical cause or describe its mitigation work.
- It did not publicly confirm the attacker’s identity, a DDoS diagnosis, a ransom demand or a political motive in the reporting available for this incident.
An outage can also result from a configuration mistake, a provider failure, software defects, capacity problems or several issues occurring together. Without technical evidence, “DDoS” remains an attribution reported by others, not a finding by Bohemia.
Ransom and political claims remain unverified
The alleged Bitcoin demand
Reports circulated that the attackers demanded payment in Bitcoin. The group later described that demand as a joke. Neither version was independently verified, so the incident cannot be presented as a confirmed extortion attempt.
The alleged political motive
Some users linked the claimed attack to arguments about Russia–Ukraine war depictions and war-crime themes on certain servers. That is community speculation. Bohemia did not confirm the group’s identity or motive, and there is no evidence establishing that political disputes caused the outage.

What players experienced
- Repeated connection failures, queues or disconnections when entering online games.
- Server-browser and backend connectivity problems.
- Difficulty reaching Bohemia’s website during parts of the incident.
- Partial or intermittent access for some users rather than a uniform worldwide shutdown.
- Frustration about limited updates and requests for refunds.
Refund requests were a player reaction, not a settled consumer-rights determination. The available evidence does not establish Bohemia’s policy response or any platform-specific refund outcome.
Why a central outage can affect community servers
A community-hosted machine may still be running while players cannot discover or join it. Clients can depend on shared authentication, matchmaking, server lists, relay services or APIs before a connection reaches the actual game server. Disrupting one of those shared services can therefore make many independent servers appear offline.
That is different from a DDoS attack against one community server or hosting account. A single-server attack may leave the wider game, official servers and other communities usable. Conversely, a publisher-side backend failure can affect both official and community experiences without every server being attacked.

Local AI battles in Arma Reforger
Arma Platform suggested local battles with AI while online access was impaired. This provided an offline activity but could not restore matchmaking, authentication or multiplayer services.
Experimental DayZ servers
DayZ reportedly introduced experimental servers during recovery efforts. Availability and reliability were not guaranteed, and they were not a permanent fix for a provider-side outage.
Restarting a community server
Players and administrators were initially told to restart community servers. That guidance was later retracted after it contributed to connection loops. The episode does not show that all community servers were compromised; it shows why restarting systems during a shared-service incident can worsen symptoms.
DayZ’s earlier DDoS-mitigation work
DDoS attacks were a known operational concern in the DayZ ecosystem before February 2025. In its official 1.25 experimental change log, Bohemia said clients would stop using hardcoded port 2304 and above so hosting providers could deploy more effective protection. It described the old arrangement as a security weakness against sophisticated attacks, advised targeted providers to contact their host and warned that a sufficiently large, protocol-specific botnet could crash a server process before mitigation took effect.
That change demonstrates why protection can require game-level networking decisions and cooperation from the hosting provider. It does not prove that the February 2025 outage was DDoS-related or that the change was deployed in response to it.
Bohemia had also acknowledged reports of attacks against community servers in a 2022 forum notice. That history establishes a recurring security problem around the ecosystem, not evidence about the later Bohemia-wide outage.
How to tell a global outage from a local problem
- Likely publisher or backend issue: multiple Bohemia games, server lists or authentication services fail at the same time, and players in different regions report matching symptoms.
- Likely official-server issue: Bohemia-operated servers are unavailable while some community servers remain reachable.
- Likely community-server attack or crash: one server, host or modded configuration fails while other servers work normally.
- Likely local connection issue: only one player is affected; changing networks, resolving DNS or checking platform services changes the result.
These tests can narrow the category but cannot prove an attack. Only provider telemetry and a technical investigation can establish DDoS traffic and attribution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat remains unknown
- The volume, duration and geographic sources of any attack traffic.
- Whether one event caused every reported symptom or whether infrastructure failures and recovery overloads also contributed.
- Whether “styled squad reborn” actually participated.
- Whether any ransom demand was genuine.
- Whether Bohemia completed and published a formal post-incident report.
Bottom line
The February 2025 DayZ and Arma Reforger outage was a genuine, broad connectivity incident. DDoS is a credible explanation because of the cross-service symptoms and a contemporaneous attacker claim, but Bohemia did not confirm it and no independent technical evidence publicly settled the question. Treat the ransom story, political motive and attribution as allegations—not established facts.
