LowLevelFatalError is not one Windows error with one fix. It is Unreal Engine’s broad fatal-crash label. The useful diagnosis is the text after it—such as D3D12RHI, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, E_INVALIDARG, or OUTOFMEMORY—plus the game, driver, hardware and reproducibility pattern. Use the sequence below to separate a driver or stability problem from damaged files, a game bug, Windows corruption or failing hardware.
Find the exact error before changing settings
Save a screenshot or copy the complete dialog, then record the game and store version, Windows edition and build, GPU, CPU, RAM, graphics-driver version, and exactly when the crash occurs: launch, shader compilation, a particular level, or after a repeatable period. Test another Unreal Engine game if one is available. Also note any recent driver or Windows update, BIOS change, overclock, undervolt, mod, overlay or graphics-setting change.
Unreal’s line number is normally an internal engine location, not a repair instruction. Epic notes that a GPU-crash call stack can show what the CPU was doing rather than the underlying GPU fault, so the complete code, log and conditions matter more than the headline. Epic’s GPU-crash guide lists device-removal, reset, invalid-argument and out-of-memory examples.
Crash reports can include the crash type, call stacks, system information, application context and log output. Editor reports are in the project’s Saved/Crashes folder; packaged games commonly use a path such as C:Users<YourWindowsUsername>AppDataLocal<ProjectName>SavedCrashes. Logs are commonly under <game-or-project>SavedLogs, although packaging varies. See Epic’s crash-reporting documentation and logging documentation.

Try these fixes in order
1. Restart and remove temporary conflicts
Restart Windows, particularly if the crash followed sleep or hibernation. For the test, close browsers, launchers not needed for the game, recording and capture software, hardware monitors, RGB utilities and every other 3D application. Epic specifically advises eliminating other 3D applications when investigating some GPU resets. Do not start by editing TDR registry values; a longer timeout can hide the cause without repairing it.
2. Return the PC to stock settings
Temporarily disable GPU overclocks and undervolts, CPU overclocks, GPU power-limit changes, third-party performance profiles, and XMP or EXPO memory profiles. An Unreal workload can expose marginal settings that pass a benchmark. Black screens, artifacts, driver resets, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, or crashes in several unrelated games strengthen the case for instability. A lower clock may mask inadequate cooling or defective hardware, so treat this as diagnosis rather than a guaranteed permanent fix.
3. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Use the GPU maker’s site, not only Windows Update:

- 15.1" WQXGA OLED Glossy Display
- Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4

Update when the driver is old or a game’s requirements call for a newer release. Roll back when the crash began immediately after an update and the previous setup was stable. If normal installation leaves persistent failures, use the installer’s clean-install option or an advanced, reputable driver-removal workflow. Change one driver version at a time and record the result instead of repeatedly rotating packages.
4. Verify the game installation
For Epic Games Store games, open Epic Games Launcher → Library → three-dot menu on the game → Manage → Verify. Verification replaces damaged or differing files without deleting saved data, according to Epic’s instructions. Steam, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft and other stores have their own repair command. Test with unofficial mods, ReShade, DLL injectors, custom launchers and manually replaced files removed; reset old configuration files only after backing them up.
5. Test the other supported rendering API
If the developer officially supports both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, try the alternate renderer using the game’s documented launch option. Common examples are -dx11, -d3d11 or -dx12, but switches are game-specific—check the developer’s support page or launcher documentation.

- DX12 crashes while DX11 works: investigate the DX12 path, shader, feature support, driver or game implementation.
- DX11 crashes while DX12 works: investigate the DX11 path or compatibility layer.
- Both crash: shared drivers, stability, files, memory, overlays or Windows become more likely.
DX11 is not universally better; it can remove features, ray tracing or performance, and some current games do not support it.
6. Disable overlays and injectors
Turn off Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience, AMD Software overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, OBS and RGB or monitoring overlays. Also disable frame generation, sharpening and ReShade for the test. If the crash stops, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict. Do not permanently disable security software as a generic fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Reduce the graphics workload
Lower textures, resolution, ray tracing, view distance, virtual shadow maps or Lumen settings; cap the frame rate; try borderless windowed mode; disable frame generation; and reduce shader-compilation or texture-streaming demands. This is especially informative for OUTOFMEMORY, VRAM-allocation, shader or timeout errors. A lower setting indicates a workload, memory, temperature, driver or game-management problem—not proof that the GPU is defective.

8. Repair Windows system files
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for completion, restart and retest. Epic includes SFC in its launcher troubleshooting guidance: Epic support. If SFC cannot repair files, follow Microsoft’s current DISM instructions for your Windows release rather than copying an unverified, one-size-fits-all command sequence.
9. Check which GPU a laptop uses
In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, assign the game executable to High performance when that option exists. Test on AC power and remove battery-saving or quiet-mode limits. Labels differ between Windows editions and manufacturer utilities, but the goal is to ensure the discrete GPU is selected.
10. Check temperatures, memory and power
For crashes in multiple games, monitor GPU and hotspot temperature, CPU temperature and power behavior; test RAM with XMP/EXPO disabled; reseat GPU power connectors; confirm the power supply is appropriate; and inspect for dust or thermal throttling. VRAM readings vary by API, so near-capacity usage is evidence, not proof. Do not replace a GPU or power supply based on one Unreal crash.

Intel 13th- and 14th-generation desktop exception
Double Fine documents occasional LowLevelFatalError instability in specific Unreal Engine games on some Intel 13th- and 14th-generation processors and points users to system-level remediation: its support notice. Identify the exact CPU in System Information or a trusted hardware utility, then follow your motherboard maker’s BIOS and Intel guidance. A BIOS mistake can leave a PC unbootable; there is no universal voltage or BIOS setting, and this does not mean every processor in those generations is defective.
When the developer, not your PC, is the likely fix
If one title crashes at one repeatable location while other demanding games remain stable, especially after a patch, a game regression, malformed asset, unsupported rendering path or mod conflict is more likely than a dead GPU. Preserve the log, reproduce with stock settings and no overlays, verify files, and check the developer’s known-issues page. A packaged-game crash report is not automatically sent to Epic; Epic states that, as of Unreal Engine 5.4, it does not receive packaged-build reports by default.
Send support useful evidence
- Complete error text and crash log, plus the crash-report identifier if shown
dxdiagoutput, GPU/CPU models, RAM amount and Windows version/build- Driver version and whether update or rollback changed the result
- Exact reproduction steps and whether another Unreal game crashes
- DX11/DX12 results, file-verification result, overlay/mod status and stock-clock status
Epic’s guidance on GPU crashes is available at this documentation page. Avoid DLL-download sites, registry cleaners, “driver updater” utilities and random compatibility settings; they add variables and can introduce new conflicts. Reinstall Windows only when system-file repair fails, unrelated applications are also broken, and the issue survives controlled driver, hardware and game-file testing.
The Bottom Line
Classify the suffix, return the PC to stock, isolate the driver, files, renderer and overlays, then test memory, temperatures and power. A single LowLevelFatalError does not prove Windows or your GPU is failing; cross-game reproducibility and a complete log determine the right escalation.
