Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLegacy: Steel & Sorcery is now listed as Eldegarde on Steam (app ID 2344320). If it crashes, first separate a local PC failure from an unavailable or outdated game build. Then work through the reversible fixes below—update the current build, verify files, remove overlays and overclocks, address GPU/DirectX errors, and only reinstall after those checks.
The developer’s announcement archive records the rename, a Gold Master announcement dated January 21, 2026, and subsequent patches: official Eldegarde announcements.
Check that you have the current game and build
Search Steam for Eldegarde, not only the former name, Legacy: Steel & Sorcery. Older videos, error messages and account popups can still use the old title; the Steam app ID remains 2344320. The developer has also removed an early-access popup that referred to the former name.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Eldegarde, choose Properties, then open Updates.
- Allow Steam to update the game and completely restart Steam (use Steam → Exit, then reopen it).
- Check the announcement archive for maintenance notices, build changes and black-screen or performance fixes.
If Steam shows a login, version or availability message instead of crashing, reinstalling drivers will not solve it. During an earlier playtest, the developer explained that ProtoUnsupportedBuild (40006) meant the test had ended, not that the player’s files were broken: developer explanation.

Identify where the crash occurs
| Symptom | Start with |
|---|---|
| Steam returns to the Play button | Update, file verification, overlays, GPU driver |
| Crash after the splash screen or a black screen | Driver, overlays, current patch, then an experimental graphics API test |
| Crash while matchmaking or loading | Build/status check, file verification, account or service error |
| Crash after entering a map or during extraction | Patch notes, GPU stability, temperatures and overlays |
| DXGI, “device removed” or driver timeout | Clean driver install or rollback, stock clocks, dedicated-GPU assignment |
| Whole PC freezes, restarts or blue-screens | System-wide power, thermal, RAM, driver or hardware diagnosis |
A crash limited to one map or round can be a game-side defect. Treat it as such if the same reproducible location fails after the basic checks; reinstalling Windows is not an appropriate first response.
Confirm your PC meets the published requirements
These are the requirements shown on the game’s Steam technical-support page. They are the developer’s reference, including the unusual CPU ordering between minimum and recommended entries.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit | Not stated |
| CPU | Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| GPU | GeForce GTX 1660 Super or Radeon 5600 XT, 6 GB VRAM | GeForce RTX 3070 or Radeon 6800 XT, 8 GB VRAM |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 40 GB available | SSD recommended |
| Network | Broadband connection | Not stated |
Below-minimum hardware cannot be promised stable performance by any software tweak. On a laptop, also use AC power and a high-performance power mode.
Apply the low-risk fixes first
Verify the installation
- In Steam Library, right-click Eldegarde and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish downloading replacements, then restart Steam and test.
Verification can replace missing or damaged game files. It does not repair Windows, drivers, overlays, save data or online services.

Also exit MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, RGB/peripheral utilities, capture software and hardware monitors. - Sword & Sorcery is an epic-fantasy cooperative board game in which 1-5 players fight together against the forces of evil, which are controlled by the game system itself
- Designed by Gremlin Project (the same team who created Galaxy Defenders), the game system in Sword & Sorcery represents the perfect evolution of its forerunner
- Key features of Galaxy Defenders have been carried over, such as the advanced AI system for monsters, a high degree of character customization, and the multiple tactical options during battles
- 60 to 90 Minutes Playing Time
- Ages 13+
Return hardware settings to stock
Temporarily remove GPU overclocks and undervolts, CPU overclocks, automatic tuning profiles and unstable RAM XMP/EXPO settings. Heavy shader compilation or sustained load can expose instability that other games do not. Do not change BIOS settings casually; follow your motherboard maker’s instructions if an advanced memory or firmware investigation becomes necessary.
Use the dedicated GPU
- Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add the game executable if it is not listed and set it to High performance.
- Restart the game. On a desktop, ensure the monitor cable is connected to the discrete graphics card, not the motherboard output.
Address DirectX and graphics-driver crashes
Update or roll back the driver based on timing
Install the latest stable driver for your exact GPU from the manufacturer, restart Windows and retest. Use NVIDIA’s driver page or AMD’s driver page, not a third-party driver site.
If the crash began immediately after a driver update, a rollback is a reasonable advanced, symptom-specific test. One Reddit report associated crashes with NVIDIA driver versions 576.52 and 576.56 and said reverting to 572.83 helped that user; it is anecdotal and not a guaranteed Eldegarde fix: community report.

Test a graphics API launch option—one at a time
Steam’s published requirements specify DirectX 12. Community troubleshooting sometimes suggests -dx11 or -dx12, but the developer has not documented these as universal fixes. Use them only as diagnostic experiments:
- Right-click the game in Steam and choose Properties.
- Stay on General and find Launch Options.
- First leave the box empty and test the default.
- If the crash happens before rendering, enter
-dx11and test. - Remove the option if it changes nothing or makes the problem worse. Do not stack undocumented flags.
The launch-option suggestion comes from third-party coverage, including this video; it is not an official DirectX 11 support statement.

Check Windows, security software and dependencies
Review antivirus quarantine
For an immediate silent exit, inspect Windows Security or your antivirus quarantine. Restore only a file that is clearly part of the official Steam installation, then verify files again. If necessary, add a temporary exclusion for the game folder or executable; never permanently disable protection as a routine fix.
Repair runtimes and Windows
Install pending Windows updates and repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official page: latest supported Visual C++ downloads. Reinstall anti-cheat or account/EOS components only when the specific error identifies those services; generic guides do not establish one package or procedure for every Eldegarde build.

Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions. Hide Microsoft services before disabling third-party services, record the original settings, test the game, then re-enable services in batches. A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent configuration.
Reinstall only after the simpler tests fail
- Back up relevant local configuration or save data.
- Uninstall Eldegarde through Steam.
- Check the Steam library location for leftover files belonging only to this game; do not delete unrelated Steam folders.
- Reinstall to an SSD with at least the required free space, then verify the files again.
A reinstall cannot correct a server-side outage, account problem, GPU instability or unsupported hardware. Community videos mention deleting leftovers or trying another SSD, but those are unconfirmed troubleshooting options: video one and video two.
Know when to stop and report the problem
Before contacting support or posting in the game’s community, record:
- Exact crash point and error text.
- Whether the game reaches the menu.
- GPU model, driver version, CPU, RAM and Windows version.
- Whether the issue began after a patch or driver change.
- Results of verification, overlay disabling and stock-clock testing.
- Relevant Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer entries and any game crash logs.
Check the official announcements and Steam’s technical-support resources before reporting. A reproducible crash that survives clean files, current drivers and conflict isolation may require a developer patch rather than another local tweak.
