Evidence indicates that Denuvo was removed from the PC build in the July 7, 2026 update, but Steam’s store page still displays the old Denuvo disclosure. That makes the best current description: Denuvo appears to be gone from the latest Steam executable, but the game is not proven completely DRM-free.
What is the current Denuvo status?
The strongest date-stamped answer is that Denuvo was reportedly removed from the Steam PC build on July 7, 2026, when the Revelations update shipped. SteamDB depot-history changes, a substantial executable-size reduction reported by community users, and independent coverage support that conclusion. GamingOnLinux reported the change on July 13, 2026, while noting that Steam still showed the old disclosure: GamingOnLinux’s report.
As of the latest pages checked on August 18, 2026, Steam and SteamDB still displayed “Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-Tamper.” That store field is evidence that Denuvo was used, but it may lag behind an executable or depot update.
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Did the Steam version launch with Denuvo? | Yes. The Steam listing disclosed Denuvo Anti-Tamper. |
| Was Denuvo reportedly removed? | Yes, the relevant build change is reported as July 7, 2026. |
| Does Steam still list Denuvo? | Yes; the public store disclosure has not caught up. |
| Is the game confirmed completely DRM-free? | No. Removing Denuvo does not remove every platform or account check. |
Was Denuvo included at launch?
Yes, for the Steam PC edition. The Steam page identified Denuvo Anti-Tamper as third-party DRM around release. Steam displays a May 14, 2025 release date, while Bethesda’s broader platform-support information gives May 15, 2025; the one-day difference reflects how the platforms present release timing and does not change the launch-era DRM disclosure. This statement applies to the Steam PC listing, not automatically to every edition. A Steam Windows build, Xbox App build, Battle.net build, and console package can use different launchers, entitlement systems, and technical protections.
When was Denuvo reportedly removed?
The observed change is dated July 7, 2026. Steam community users connected that date with a SteamDB depot-history change and a much smaller executable. Their discussion is available at Steam Community. GamingOnLinux independently reported on July 13 that Denuvo had been removed even though the Steam page still carried the old label.
No official Bethesda announcement confirming the removal was located in the cited sources. Treat July 7 as the reported build-change date, not as a publisher-certified DRM policy statement. Someone who installed the game before that date may need to download the update before receiving the changed executable.
Why does Steam still say Denuvo?
Steam’s DRM disclosure is store metadata; Denuvo itself is integrated into a game build. A publisher can update depots and replace an executable without immediately editing the store-page field. SteamDB continued to show the Denuvo entry after the July update, and GamingOnLinux specifically described the page as unchanged.

- Brand Name:Xbox
- Video game region: region free
- Display Platform: PS5
Therefore, the two observations are not necessarily contradictory:
- The store page reliably records that Denuvo was disclosed for the release.
- Depot and executable evidence indicates that the protection was removed from a later build.
- The store label alone cannot prove that the current executable still contains Denuvo.
Is DOOM: The Dark Ages now completely DRM-free?
No such conclusion is established. Denuvo Anti-Tamper is one protection layer, not a synonym for every form of DRM. The Steam edition can still involve:
- Steam client and account entitlement checks;
- platform authentication or first-launch setup;
- online services and possible Bethesda-account requirements; and
- future updates that could alter the game’s protection.
SteamDB’s information page records an active internet connection requirement for first-time setup in its SteamOS compatibility information: SteamDB app information. That does not prove that every Windows launch requires recurring internet access, and it is not a guarantee of unrestricted offline play. The available evidence supports “Denuvo removed” more strongly than “fully DRM-free.”
Does Denuvo removal improve performance?
There is no controlled benchmark evidence here proving a frame-rate, loading-time, or stutter improvement after the July update. A smaller executable demonstrates a build change, not a specific performance gain. Individual player reports are anecdotes unless they compare identical hardware, drivers, settings, and game versions.

Yes. Bethesda lists DOOM: The Dark Ages for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox App for Windows PC, Steam, Battle.net, and PlayStation 5: Bethesda’s platform list.
Steam
The clearest evidence concerns this edition: Denuvo was disclosed at launch and is reported removed from the July 7, 2026 build, while the store metadata remains stale.
Xbox App for Windows and PC Game Pass
The Xbox App is a separate PC distribution path. Its launcher, entitlement checks, and files need not match Steam’s. Bethesda’s platform listing does not establish whether it used the same Denuvo implementation or removal date. PC Game Pass information is available at Xbox PC Game Pass.

Battle.net
Battle.net is also a distinct PC build and launcher. The cited evidence does not establish that its Denuvo status matched Steam’s. The official storefront is Battle.net.
Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5
Console editions should not be called “Denuvo-free” based on a PC executable change. Console packaging and platform security are separate from the Steam question.
PC requirements that Denuvo removal does not change
Removing an anti-tamper component does not lower Bethesda’s published hardware requirements. The game requires hardware ray tracing even at minimum settings:
- Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit.
- Minimum: an 8-core/16-thread-class CPU, 16 GB RAM, a ray-tracing-capable GPU with at least 8 GB dedicated VRAM, and 100 GB available on a 512 GB-or-larger NVMe SSD.
- Recommended: 32 GB RAM and a ray-tracing-capable GPU with at least 10 GB VRAM.
- Ultra 4K: 32 GB RAM and a ray-tracing-capable GPU with at least 16 GB VRAM.
See Bethesda’s complete requirements at Bethesda’s PC specifications page. Denuvo removal does not make the game suitable for hardware below those ray-tracing requirements.
What to do if the PC version will not launch
Do not assume a launch failure proves that Denuvo is still present. Follow Bethesda’s troubleshooting sequence:
- Confirm that the computer meets the minimum specifications.
- Fully exit and relaunch Steam, the Xbox App, or Battle.net, then restart the computer.
- Check that the game is using the intended discrete GPU.
- Update graphics drivers. The cited support page lists AMD 25.5.1 and NVIDIA 576.40 as its driver baselines; these are time-stamped guidance, not a promise that they are the newest drivers today.
- Verify or repair the game files.
- Remove mods and repair or reinstall if necessary.
- Check administrator permissions and antivirus exclusions.
- Temporarily disable Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar while isolating launch or performance problems.
Bottom line
| Version or status | Answer |
|---|---|
| Steam at launch | Denuvo Anti-Tamper was listed. |
| Current reported Steam PC build | Denuvo was reportedly removed on July 7, 2026. |
| Steam store disclosure | Still lists Denuvo, apparently as outdated metadata. |
| Completely DRM-free | Not confirmed. |
| Guaranteed unrestricted offline play | Not established. |
If you specifically avoid Denuvo, the latest evidence favors the updated Steam build. If you require a formally confirmed DRM-free release or guaranteed offline operation, wait for an updated store disclosure or platform-specific confirmation rather than treating Denuvo’s reported removal as a blanket promise.
