Buy the RTX 4070 Super when it costs roughly the same as an RTX 4070; keep an RTX 4070 you already own unless your net upgrade cost is unusually small. Independent testing puts the Super about 15–16% faster on average, with larger gains in some high-resolution and ray-traced workloads. Both cards still have 12GB of VRAM, so the Super is a faster refresh—not a major generational or future-proofing upgrade.
RTX 4070 Super vs RTX 4070 at a glance
NVIDIA’s specifications show two Ada Lovelace cards using the same 192-bit memory interface and 12GB capacity. The Super enables substantially more shader and ray-tracing resources, while its reference power target rises from about 200W to 220W. The figures below are reference specifications; board partners can change clocks, coolers, dimensions, connectors and power limits.
| Specification | RTX 4070 | RTX 4070 Super | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architecture / GPU | Ada Lovelace / AD104 | Ada Lovelace / AD104 | Same broad feature generation; Super is a more enabled configuration |
| CUDA cores | 5,888 | 7,168 | About 22% more shader resources, but not 22% more game performance |
| Boost clock (reference) | 2.48GHz | 2.48GHz | Core-count increase does most of the work |
| RT and Tensor cores | Fewer than Super | More than 4070 | Higher ray-tracing and AI throughput; exact partner clocks vary |
| Memory | 12GB GDDR6 or GDDR6X | 12GB GDDR6X | No capacity increase; 4070 memory type depends on board |
| Memory bus / bandwidth | 192-bit / 504GB/s reference | 192-bit / 504GB/s reference | Identical interface and reference bandwidth |
| Graphics power class | About 200W | About 220W | Roughly 10% more board power for Super |
| Launch MSRP | $599; NVIDIA repositioned it at $549 when Super launched | $599 | Historical prices; 2026 street prices vary |
| Independent average | Baseline | About 15–16% faster | Tom’s Hardware result across its 15-game suite |
See NVIDIA’s family specifications at NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 family page. The Super’s extra cores improve throughput, but unchanged memory capacity and bus width remain important limitations.
How much faster is the RTX 4070 Super in games?
Tom’s Hardware tested 15 games at 1080p, 1440p Ultra and 4K Ultra across rasterized and ray-traced workloads. Its aggregate result was approximately 15–16% in favor of the Super. That is a useful uplift, but the exact difference depends on the game, driver, CPU, settings, upscaling and whether the GPU is actually the bottleneck. GamersNexus provides a separate benchmark comparison at its RTX 4070 Super review.

1080p
At 1080p, either card can be limited by the processor before its full rendering capacity is used. A 15% GPU advantage may produce little change in a CPU-limited esports game, especially on a 60Hz display. With a fast CPU and a 144Hz or 240Hz target, the Super can add useful frames in GPU-bound titles, but it is usually not the best reason to replace a working 4070.
1440p and 3440×1440
This is the Super’s strongest use case. At 1440p Ultra, and particularly on a 3440×1440 ultrawide, the GPU more often determines frame rate. The uplift can turn a game that hovers below a high-refresh target into one that stays closer to it. Ray tracing and demanding modern engines increase the value of the extra shader and RT throughput.
4K
Both cards can deliver playable 4K results in selected games, especially with DLSS Quality or Frame Generation, but neither is a consistently comfortable 4K Ultra card for a long ownership period. Native 4K, heavy ray tracing, large texture packs and mods can run into both performance and 12GB VRAM limits. A 4K/120Hz target generally calls for a faster class of GPU.
Rasterization, ray tracing and frame rates
The Super’s advantage is normally visible in GPU-bound raster workloads and can grow in demanding ray-traced scenes. Average FPS does not guarantee better 1% lows: stutter caused by CPU limits, shader compilation or insufficient VRAM will not be fixed simply by adding cores. A 16% average gain might mean 10–15 additional frames near 60 FPS, a more noticeable improvement near 100–144 FPS, or almost nothing when another component limits performance.

DLSS, frame generation and creator features
Both cards support the same Ada-era ecosystem: DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, RTX ray tracing, AV1 encoding, CUDA applications, NVIDIA Broadcast and NVIDIA driver support. The Super does not unlock a wholly new feature class; it renders the same features faster. If newer Blackwell-era capabilities are the priority, compare pricing with the RTX 5070 rather than assuming the 4070 Super is the newest option.
Power, thermals, noise and compatibility
- The reference-class 4070 is about 200W; the Super is about 220W. That modest increase can mean somewhat more heat, fan activity and PSU headroom.
- Founders Edition/reference Super designs use a 16-pin connector, commonly with an adapter. RTX 4070 partner cards vary: some use 8-pin, others use 16-pin.
- Check the exact model’s recommended PSU, connector, adapter, card length, slot thickness and case clearance. Factory-overclocked boards can exceed reference power.
- A Super upgrade may require routing a new cable or replacing an unsuitable power supply, adding cost and installation risk.
Do not generalize one cooler or connector to every board partner. Compare noise, warranty, return policy and dimensions alongside the GPU name.
The 12GB VRAM question
Both cards have 12GB, and both use a 192-bit bus. That is generally adequate for 1440p today with sensible texture settings and DLSS, but 4K Ultra, heavy ray tracing, high-resolution texture packs and mods can create memory pressure. The Super’s extra processing power does not add memory headroom. If your reason for upgrading is long-term capacity, moving from one 12GB card to another is the wrong solution; look for a card with more than 12GB instead.
Is the RTX 4070 Super a good buy in 2026?
Use the actual price on the day you buy, not the launch MSRP. The Super launched at $599, while NVIDIA repositioned the 4070 at $549. A July 10, 2026 PC Guide snapshot listed an ASUS TUF Super at $689.99, illustrating how premium partner models can erase the value advantage; see PC Guide’s pricing example. Compare new with new or used with used, and include tax, shipping, rebates, warranty and return terms. A premium Super at $650–$700 is not automatically sensible if an RTX 5070 is similarly priced. NVIDIA lists the RTX 5070 at 6,144 CUDA cores, 12GB GDDR7, 672GB/s bandwidth and 250W TGP in its Blackwell architecture specification. Those specifications establish its newer memory and architecture, not a universal gaming-performance ranking; check independent tests and current prices.

Tom’s Hardware described the Super as an easy purchase for someone who had not bought a 4070, but not a fundamental change for existing owners; see its conclusion and price-performance discussion.
- Low net cost: Potentially worthwhile if the difference is roughly no more than 10% of the Super’s purchase price and you need more 1440p high-refresh or ray-traced performance.
- Moderate net cost: Consider it only when your current card repeatedly misses a specific frame-rate target at 1440p or ultrawide.
- High net cost: Keep the 4070 and skip this refresh; selling, reinstalling, troubleshooting and possibly changing cables add friction without adding VRAM.
Do not upgrade merely for “future-proofing,” for CPU-limited 1080p esports, or when the 4070 already meets your monitor’s target. Inspect a used replacement for warranty transferability, mining history, fan-bearing noise, coil whine, BIOS changes, physical damage and the included 16-pin adapter.
Which card fits each buyer?
- Best at equal price: RTX 4070 Super.
- Best budget choice: RTX 4070 when it is at least about 15–20% cheaper, or when a used/open-box deal includes a trustworthy warranty.
- Best for 1440p Ultra and ultrawide: RTX 4070 Super, especially with ray tracing or a high-refresh monitor.
- Best for a current RTX 4070 owner: Keep the card unless the net cost is very small and a measurable frame-rate problem is being solved.
- Best for 4K: Neither is an ideal long-term 4K Ultra choice; use DLSS and realistic settings, or consider a card with more VRAM and higher throughput.
- Best when 12GB is the concern: Choose a different class of GPU with more memory rather than switching between these two.
- Best newer NVIDIA option: Compare the RTX 5070’s real street price and independent gaming results before buying a premium-priced 4070 Super.
Verdict
For a new build, the RTX 4070 Super is the right choice whenever its price is within roughly 10–15% of a comparable RTX 4070. Take the RTX 4070 when the discount reaches about 20%, the target is ordinary 1080p or 1440p, or the saved money improves another part of the system. For existing RTX 4070 owners, the Super’s 15–16% refresh-level gain rarely justifies a normal resale-and-repurchase cycle; wait for a larger performance or VRAM jump unless a very small net cost solves a high-refresh or ray-tracing shortfall.
