Minecraft: Bedrock Edition reached PS4 on December 10, 2019. If you already owned Minecraft on PS4, it was a free update—you do not buy the game again. Start the existing application, install its update, and then link a Microsoft account if you want cross-platform play or Realms.
New PS4 players need the PS4 game license (digital or disc). Online multiplayer also requires a PlayStation Network account, a linked Microsoft account, current Bedrock versions for everyone, and PlayStation Plus. Bedrock cross-play includes compatible versions on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and mobile; it does not include Java Edition.

What changed when Bedrock came to PS4?
PS4 originally had a separate legacy release called Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition. The December 2019 update moved PS4 to Minecraft’s Bedrock platform, the edition shared by consoles, Windows Bedrock, and mobile devices. The launch update was announced as version 1.14 (the Buzzy Bees update), but that number describes the 2019 launch, not the current game version. PlayStation’s announcement described the update as free for existing owners.
- Play with compatible Bedrock players on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Windows, iOS, and Android.
- Use the Minecraft Marketplace for worlds, skins, add-ons, mash-up packs, and other creator content.
- Access eligible Marketplace purchases made on other supported platforms when the same Microsoft account is used.
- Keep using the PS4 purchase you already own; existing owners were not required to repurchase Minecraft.
Bedrock is not identical to the former PS4 legacy edition. Menus, mechanics, content availability, and some old console features differ. Bedrock also cannot join Java Edition worlds or servers. A Windows friend must launch the Windows Bedrock version, not Java.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
What you need
- A PS4 connected to the internet.
- The PSN account that owns the digital game, or the original Minecraft PS4 disc inserted in the console.
- A Microsoft account for cross-platform play and Realms.
- PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer on PS4; offline and local split-screen play do not require it.
- The same current, compatible Bedrock release for every player.
PlayStation’s current US listing describes one-to-four local players and up to eight online players with PlayStation Plus. That store figure is a listing limit, not a promise that every Realm or server uses the same limit. Subscription prices and game prices vary by region and can change.
Install or update Bedrock on PS4
Existing digital owner
- Connect the PS4 to the internet and sign in to the PSN account that purchased Minecraft.
- Highlight Minecraft on the home screen and start it. The console should download the available application update.
- If no download starts, press Options while Minecraft is highlighted and choose Check for Update.
- Install the update and restart Minecraft if the PS4 requests it.
- Confirm that the title screen is the current Bedrock interface rather than only the old legacy interface.
Existing disc owner
- Insert the Minecraft PS4 disc that supplies your license.
- Start Minecraft while the PS4 is online and allow the application to update.
- Keep the disc inserted whenever you launch the disc-based game. Updating does not turn the disc into a disc-free digital entitlement.
New PS4 buyer
Buy the PS4 Standard Edition from the PlayStation Store or use a legitimate physical PS4 copy, install it, and apply the latest update. The US Store listing showed $19.99 on August 18, 2026; check your account region for the current price. The listing includes PS5 products and bundles as well, so select the PS4 edition deliberately.

Link a Microsoft account
The PS4 game license is tied to PSN. Your cross-platform identity, friends, Realms access, and eligible Marketplace entitlements use Microsoft account sign-in.
- At the Minecraft title screen, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Scan the displayed QR code or open microsoft.com/link on another device.
- Enter the code shown by Minecraft.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to keep using with this PSN account.
- Return to Minecraft and verify that the Microsoft gamertag appears as signed in.
Choose carefully: Minecraft Help documents a one-account association between a PSN account and a Microsoft account. Changing it is restricted, so do not link a child’s temporary account or a random account while testing.

Set up cross-platform multiplayer
Add a friend
- Sign in to Microsoft in Minecraft and open the Play or Friends area.
- Choose the option to add a friend.
- Search for the person’s Microsoft/Xbox gamertag, which may differ from their PSN ID.
- Have the other player accept or confirm the request if Minecraft asks for it.
All participants must use Bedrock, sign in to Microsoft, and run compatible current versions. A Windows player using Java Edition will not appear as a compatible Bedrock friend.
Join a friend’s world
- The host enables multiplayer in that world’s settings and remains online.
- The joining player opens Play, then the Friends list.
- Select the available world when it appears.
A normal friend-hosted world generally closes when its host leaves. For a persistent private world, Realms is the hosted option; the PlayStation listing describes Realms Plus as supporting play with up to 10 friends. Public or featured servers have their own moderation, privacy, and parental-control considerations. Minecraft’s help documentation outlines these three broad choices: a friend’s world, a Realm, or a server.
Rank #4
- Experience an epic legend from the Minecraft universe and the Overworld as you’ve never seen it before.
- Form alliances with new friends and familiar mobs, then lead the charge in epic battles against the fierce piglins to defend the Overworld.
- Traverse a lush, dynamic world that’s rich in resources and different in each playthrough.
- Challenge your friends or team up in intense battles as you defend your village while leading your units to destroy your opponents’ settlements.
- Includes the Minecraft Legends base game and the Deluxe Skin pack, featuring 6 additional in-game skins: 1 hero, 4 mounts, and an additional mount skin when it becomes available.
Worlds, legacy features, and Marketplace content
Back up important PS4 saves before a major update, reinstall, or account change. The update process addresses existing Minecraft data, but Bedrock and the legacy PS4 edition are different editions; do not assume that every old mechanic, menu, minigame, skin, or save behaves identically.
If the updated installation shows an Editions option, it may provide access to the older PS4 edition, but availability depends on the account’s ownership history and installed entitlement. There is no blanket promise that local PS4 worlds automatically synchronize across every other device.
Best Value
- The critically acclaimed Minecraft comes to PlayStation 4, offering bigger worlds and greater draw distance than the PS3 and PS Vita editions
- Create your own world, then, build, explore and conquer
- When night falls the monsters appear, so be sure to build a shelter before they arrive
- The world is only limited by your imagination
Marketplace purchases are optional. Eligible non-exclusive purchases can be available on supported platforms through the linked Microsoft account, while new purchases on PlayStation use the PlayStation version of the Minecraft Store and its token system. A linked account does not remove child-account, privacy, or spending restrictions.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting
No update appears
- Confirm you are signed in to the PSN account that owns Minecraft.
- Check the PS4 internet connection, highlight Minecraft, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
- Restart the PS4 and try again.
- Free storage if the drive is nearly full.
- Insert the original PS4 disc if your license is disc-based.
- Do not delete save data as a first step; back up worlds before reinstalling.
- If the Store asks you to buy Minecraft, check the PSN profile, disc region, and installed product version before paying again.
Microsoft sign-in fails
- Enter the code only at the official microsoft.com/link page.
- Use the Microsoft account intended for long-term PlayStation use.
- Check whether that account is already associated with another PSN account.
- Sign out, restart Minecraft, and sign in again if the gamertag does not appear.
- For a child account, complete Microsoft family, privacy, and communication settings.
Friends cannot see or join one another
- Verify that nobody is using Java Edition, the legacy PS4-only edition, or a preview build.
- Update every device to the same current Bedrock release.
- Confirm Microsoft accounts are signed in and gamertags were added correctly.
- Ensure the host enabled multiplayer and is online with the world open.
- Check that PS Plus and any required subscription on another console are active.
- Review Microsoft family, privacy, and communication permissions.
