Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stood out at Summer Game Fest 2024 because it paired a rare, clearly explained combat idea with an unusually distinctive world. Sandfall Interactive’s debut RPG combines menu-based turn planning with real-time dodges, jumps, parries, counters and timed attacks, all inside a surreal Belle Époque-inspired story about a city racing to stop an annual age-erasure ritual. The game released on 24 April 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Xbox announcing day-one Game Pass availability.
Why the 2024 reveal made such an impression
A small studio with a specific ambition
Sandfall Interactive presented Expedition 33 as its first RPG, made by a team of around 30 developers in Montpellier, France. That context mattered: the reveal showed a game with unusually high-fidelity Unreal Engine 5 visuals while also explaining a mechanical identity viewers could understand immediately.

Founder and creative director Guillaume Broche said the team wanted to address a gap he felt in modern role-playing games: “There hasn’t really been any attempt at making a turn-based RPG with high-fidelity graphics for a good while.” Rather than hiding behind a broad genre label, the presentation demonstrated exactly how its version of turn-based combat would work.
A high-concept premise you can grasp in one sentence
The world’s last human city, Lumière, lives under a yearly countdown. The Paintress paints a number on a monolith; every person who has reached that age is erased. When she paints 33, Gustave and the members of Expedition 33 have one year to find and destroy her.

That premise gives the adventure a concrete deadline without reducing it to a simple rescue mission. The ritual, the disappearing generations and the expedition’s doomed-sounding name all establish the stakes before the player knows the wider history of the setting.
A visual identity beyond conventional fantasy
“Clair obscur” refers to a real French artistic and cultural movement associated with the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Sandfall used that influence alongside Belle Époque imagery and surrealism, creating a setting that feels more like a distorted painting or stage set than a standard medieval fantasy or space opera. The contrast between elegant architecture, strange creatures and existential horror was one of the reveal’s strongest hooks.
What kind of game is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
It is a party-based role-playing game built around exploration, character progression and turn-based battles that demand real-time input. You still choose abilities from menus and can pause to think through your plan, but success also depends on what you do while attacks and defensive windows are unfolding.
Sandfall calls this approach reactive turn-based combat. Broche described it as taking time to establish a strategy, then reacting in real time during the enemy’s turn to dodge, jump or parry and potentially trigger a powerful counterattack. That makes the game neither a conventional menu-only RPG nor a fully real-time action game.

How the reactive turn-based combat works
1. Plan your turn
At the command stage, you select attacks, skills and other abilities for your party. This is the strategic layer: choose a target, consider elemental or other weaknesses, and decide whether to spend a resource now or prepare a stronger sequence. You are not forced to make those decisions on a real-time clock.
2. Improve attacks with timing
Basic attacks deal limited damage. Timed commands can make skills more effective, so an ability is not always a single button press followed by a passive animation. The combat system asks you to learn the timing of attacks and execute inputs accurately once the action begins.
3. Defend during the enemy’s turn
When an enemy attacks, you can respond with a dodge, jump or parry. A successful parry can negate the incoming damage and open a counterattack, turning defense into an offensive opportunity. The result is a battle rhythm in which menu choices create a plan, but your reactions determine whether that plan survives contact with the enemy.
4. Aim at weak points
Free Aim lets you target weak points rather than accepting a fixed target selection. That adds another decision during combat: the best action may depend on where you place the attack, not only on which skill you selected.

- Engaging Storyline: Dive into a rich, narrative-driven adventure with unexpected twists.
- Complex Puzzles: Test your problem-solving skills with challenging puzzles.
- Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.
5. Build around each character’s identity
Party members are not interchangeable versions of the same job. Each has a distinct combat identity, skill tree, stat growth, equipment and passive-trait options. Two examples shown in the gameplay material illustrate the design:
| Character | Signature system | How it shapes play |
|---|---|---|
| Gustave | Mechanical arm and Overcharge | His attacks build Overcharge, giving you a resource to manage as you plan turns and choose when to unleash it. |
| Lune | Elemental Stains | Her abilities create elemental Stains that can be used to exploit enemy weaknesses and shape later actions. |
The broader system supports different builds through skills, stats, gear and passive effects. That depth is important because the real-time reactions are only one part of the game: preparation and character development remain central.
Is Expedition 33 turn-based or real-time?
It is both, but its underlying structure is turn-based. You select commands and establish your strategy in turns, then perform real-time inputs during attacks and enemy actions. Calling it simply “real-time” misses the deliberate menu planning; calling it traditional turn-based combat misses the timing, reactions and execution demands.
| Combat element | What you do |
|---|---|
| Command planning | Choose abilities, targets and resource use without an action timer forcing the decision. |
| Attack execution | Use timed inputs to strengthen skills and attacks. |
| Enemy defense | Dodge, jump or parry in real time. |
| Counterplay | Successful parries can negate damage and trigger a counterattack. |
| Targeting | Use Free Aim to hit weak points. |
Exploration is nonlinear and built for curiosity
The reveal also showed that the adventure is not a corridor between scripted fights. Areas can be explored through vertical routes and alternate paths, with traversal tools such as grapples, climbing hooks and ropes opening access to places that are easy to miss.

Flying Waters was used to demonstrate this philosophy. The area contains remnants of failed expeditions, hidden items, secret bosses and entire secret levels. Thorough exploration is therefore more than a search for cosmetic details: investigating side routes can reveal new encounters, rewards and parts of the world’s history.
The setting: Lumière, the Paintress and Expedition 33
Lumière is described as humanity’s last city, making the expedition’s departure feel like a journey from a protected center into an unknown world. Each year, the Paintress reduces the population by erasing everyone at a particular age. The number changes annually, so every surviving generation knows that its turn is approaching.
Once the number 33 appears, Gustave and his fellow expedition members have a single year to reach the Paintress and end the cycle. The premise gives the story both a personal and societal scale: the characters are trying to save people they know while confronting the force that has structured civilization around an unavoidable annual loss.

What influenced the game?
Broche has cited Final Fantasy, the Tales series, Lost Odyssey, Persona, Souls, Devil May Cry and NieR as influences. Those references help explain the unusual combination on display: party-RPG planning, character-driven progression, demanding defensive timing, stylish action and a world that treats beauty and tragedy as inseparable.
Why the reveal still matters
Many showcase announcements rely on a familiar genre label and a release window. Expedition 33 offered a more memorable proposition: a French-surrealist RPG from a small debut team, with a readable combat rule that asked players to think first and react second. Its reveal stood out because the art direction, premise and mechanics all pointed toward the same experience rather than competing for attention.
If you are deciding whether to try it, the key question is not whether you prefer turn-based or action games in isolation. It is whether you want a role-playing game that lets you plan like a traditional party RPG while asking you to earn stronger outcomes through timing, defense and exploration.
