The full version of Resident Evil 7 biohazard is not permanently free. You can, however, play it temporarily through eligible Xbox Game Pass plans, try the free Beginning Hour teaser on Steam, or download the free Not a Hero add-on if you already have the base game. Avoid “free download” sites offering cracked installers or unauthorized copies.
The quickest legal way to play the full game
Xbox announced Resident Evil 7 biohazard for Game Pass cloud, console and PC access beginning March 31, 2026. The current Xbox listing identifies the game as included with Game Pass Premium and Game Pass Ultimate. Availability can change, so verify the listing before subscribing: Xbox product page.
Game Pass is subscription access, not a permanent copy. You can play while your subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. If either condition ends, you must buy the game to continue.
Xbox’s U.S. pages displayed introductory offers during August 2026, including $1 for 14 days of Premium and $1 for one month of Essential, subject to eligibility and automatic renewal. Offers, prices and regions vary; check Xbox Game Pass before paying.

Plan names, prices, introductory promotions and catalog availability are volatile. Xbox’s comparison page and the game’s own listing are the safest checks.
How to play Resident Evil 7 on Xbox
- Sign in to the Xbox profile that has the eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Open the Microsoft Store or the Xbox Game Pass area and search for RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard.
- Confirm that the page says Included with Game Pass for your current plan.
- Select Install for a local Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S installation, or select Play when cloud gaming is offered.
- For cloud play, confirm that your country, device, plan and network are supported. Xbox does not make cloud gaming universal across every region or device.
The Xbox listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming support. A purchase or subscription entitlement is still required; cloud gaming is not a free service.
How to play on a Windows PC
PC Game Pass and the Xbox app
- Use a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC updated to version 22H2 or later.
- Install or update the Xbox app and sign in with the Microsoft account holding PC Game Pass, Premium or Ultimate.
- Search for Resident Evil 7 biohazard.
- If the current PC catalog includes it, select Install, then launch it from the Xbox app.
Microsoft’s PC requirements and app details are listed at Xbox PC Game Pass. Individual game requirements can be stricter than the service’s operating-system requirement.

Microsoft Store and Xbox Play Anywhere
The Xbox/Microsoft Store version supports Xbox Play Anywhere. A qualifying digital purchase can cover Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC under the same Microsoft account. This is paid ownership, not free access, unless your subscription currently includes the title. The separate Windows Store listing warns that its version does not support onboard GPUs or Xbox Series X|S upgrade features: Windows Store listing.

Steam sells the complete campaign separately. The page retrieved for August 2026 showed a $19.99 U.S. price, but regional pricing and sales differ: Steam product page. A Steam purchase does not unlock the Xbox or Microsoft Store version.
Is there a genuinely free demo?
Steam offers Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour as a free download. It is a separate, limited preview and not the complete campaign. There is no verified current official Xbox free full-game demo in the available listings. On Xbox, use purchase or qualifying Game Pass access, and check the current store page for any account-specific trial.

What is the free Not a Hero DLC?
Resident Evil 7 biohazard – Not a Hero is free additional content associated with the game. It is not the main campaign and is not a standalone replacement for it; access requires the base game. The Xbox and Steam product pages list it alongside the main title.

Recommended specifications are an Intel Core i7-3770 at 3.4 GHz or equivalent AMD processor, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 3 GB VRAM, Windows 10/11 64-bit and 24 GB storage. Steam describes its minimum target as approximately 1080p/30 fps and recommended target as approximately 1080p/60 fps, depending on settings and hardware. The Microsoft Store build can have different technical limitations.

What happens when Game Pass ends?
Access stops when your subscription expires or when Resident Evil 7 leaves the catalog, even if the game remains installed. To keep playing, purchase the game through the storefront you intend to use. Do not assume that a Steam purchase, Xbox purchase and Game Pass entitlement are interchangeable licenses.
Promotional subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. If you only want the introductory period, turn off recurring billing in your Microsoft account before the next billing date; see Xbox’s subscription information.

The page shows “Buy” instead of “Install”
- Confirm that the subscription is active and attached to the signed-in account.
- Check that your tier is eligible and that the game is still listed as included.
- Verify the Microsoft Store region and the selected edition.
- On PC, update the Xbox app and confirm Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later.
- If only a purchase option remains, do not assume the game is included.
Cloud gaming will not start
Check the plan, supported country, browser or device, controller compatibility, network quality and the game’s current cloud-enabled status. A Game Pass listing alone does not guarantee cloud play on every device.

You downloaded “Not a Hero” but cannot play the campaign
That download is an add-on. Install or obtain the base game separately.
How to avoid fake free downloads
Cracked installers, torrents, key generators, “no survey” pages, unauthorized ISO sites and fake Microsoft login screens are not legitimate access methods. They can contain malware, steal credentials and infringe copyright. Use only the Xbox, Microsoft Store or Steam listings linked above.

You cannot claim the full Resident Evil 7 biohazard campaign permanently for free. For temporary full-game access, check Game Pass Premium or Ultimate on Xbox, or PC Game Pass on Windows. For permanent Xbox-and-PC access, buy the Microsoft Store version. If you want to spend nothing, Steam’s official Beginning Hour teaser is the legitimate free option.
