AYN Thor explained: the dual-screen Android handheld in 2026

AYN’s Thor is a shipping dual-screen Android handheld built around DS and 3DS emulation. Here are its five configurations, current buying cautions, performance limits and alternatives.

The AYN Thor is now a shipping product, not just the August 2025 reveal: a clamshell Android 13 handheld with a 6-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen above a 3.92-inch touchscreen. Its reason to exist is simple—Nintendo DS and 3DS emulation with two physically separate displays—while its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 models also handle demanding Android games and many sixth-generation emulation workloads. The sensible default is usually the 8GB/128GB Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Base, provided its live price is close to the Lite.

What the AYN Thor is today

AYN announced the Thor on August 19, 2025 as its first dual-screen handheld after the Odin line. It is a portable clamshell computer running Android 13, with touch input on both panels, physical controls in the lower half, active cooling and a 6,000mAh battery. It is not a Nintendo product or a DS replacement in the official sense: Nintendo software is not included, and AYN says no games are preinstalled. You supply and configure your own legally obtained game backups and emulator software.

The original reveal framing is outdated. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 versions began shipping in October 2025, independent reviews are available, and AYN’s store now lists Batch 7 pre-orders. The selected configuration showed $259 when checked, but the page uses dynamic SKU pricing and AYN raised prices during 2026. Verify the exact model, currency, stock state and shipping estimate at AYN’s Thor store page before ordering.

AYN’s original prices ran from $249 to about $429. A June 2026 report said the Lite, Base, Pro and Max 512GB were each scheduled to rise by $10, and the Max 1TB by $30, from July 3. Those are historical price points, not a reliable current price.

Current models and specifications

Model Processor RAM Storage
Thor Lite Snapdragon 865 8GB 128GB
Thor Base Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 8GB 128GB
Thor Pro Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 12GB 256GB
Thor Max 512GB Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 16GB 512GB
Thor Max 1TB Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 16GB 1TB

AYN confirms the five combinations, Android 13, Hall-effect sticks, microSD expansion, 6,000mAh battery and a one-year warranty on the official product page. The major buying divide is the chipset, not the RAM number. Lite uses the older Snapdragon 865 with LPDDR4X memory, UFS 3.1 storage, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. Base, Pro and Max use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, faster memory and storage, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and reported USB-C video output up to 4K60.

Display specifications

  • Top: 6-inch AMOLED, 1,920 × 1,080, up to 120Hz.
  • Bottom: 3.92-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 1,240 × 1,080 (orientation may be described as approximately 1,080 × 1,240), 60Hz.
  • Both displays support touch, but they differ in size, aspect ratio and refresh rate.

Notebookcheck reported roughly 650 nits peak brightness for the main panel and 550 nits for the lower one; those are test observations rather than universal AYN specifications. The device has a USB-C port for charging, data and video, a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD slot, shoulder buttons, analog triggers, ABXY buttons, a D-pad, Hall-effect sticks and reported RGB lighting around the controls. Notebookcheck lists 27W wired charging, while DROIX reports approximate dimensions of 5.91 × 3.70 × 0.98 inches and a 380g weight.

Why two screens are the point

True dual-screen emulation

With a suitable DS or 3DS emulator, the top and bottom panels can show separate game screens at their intended relative positions. That avoids shrinking both images into one display or constantly switching layouts. The lower touchscreen also restores stylus-like interaction for menus, maps and minigames.

Extended Android use

Android software can place a guide, browser, chat window, video or inventory panel on the lower display. This is an extended or mirrored workflow, not automatically a native two-screen game. Each app and emulator may need its own placement, rotation, scaling and touch mapping.

Single-screen mode

For ordinary Android games or older emulators, the lower panel can be disabled. That simplifies play and reduces power use, although you still carry the larger clamshell body and its extra screen.

DROIX found the Thor most compelling for DS and 3DS because the hardware solves a real interface problem. It also found a modest performance reduction with both displays active, most relevant to demanding software rather than simple 2D games.

Software setup is part of ownership

The Thor is an Android handheld, not a plug-and-play cartridge console. A typical setup is:

  1. Complete Android setup and connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Sign into Google Play if Google services are present in the installed firmware.
  3. Install emulators appropriate for games you legally own or have backed up.
  4. Configure top- and bottom-screen placement, rotation, scaling and touch controls per emulator or title.
  5. Open AYN’s control panel to assign lower-screen apps and adjust display, brightness and volume.
  6. Optionally install a frontend, then map buttons and set performance, fan and brightness behavior.
  7. Add a microSD card if internal storage is insufficient.

DROIX describes a central AYN button with Mode, Task and Settings sections. Firmware updates can move labels or options, so treat those names as a current-review description rather than a guaranteed menu path. Expect per-game troubleshooting: Android was not designed around a Nintendo-style clamshell, and a second panel being available does not make every emulator seamless.

Performance: strong, but not universal

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Thor models have enough headroom for demanding Android games and many sixth-generation emulation workloads. DROIX reports systems up to PS2 running well in its testing, with driver support affecting higher-end results. GameCube and PS2 performance still varies by emulator, title, resolution, graphics driver, thermal mode and whether both displays are active.

  • DS and 3DS: the strongest reason to buy; the physical layout is unusually well suited, but compatibility remains emulator- and title-dependent.
  • GameCube and PS2: plausible and often good on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, not a guarantee for every game.
  • Switch, Wii U and PS3: use especially cautious expectations. Compatibility is inconsistent, software may be unofficial, and the Thor is not a universal modern-console replacement.
  • Lite: Snapdragon 865 preserves the dual-screen concept but has less performance and a weaker connectivity/external-display platform than the 8 Gen 2 models.

Battery, heat and ergonomics

The rated battery is 6,000mAh. In DROIX’s extreme test—with both displays on, maximum brightness, high-performance mode and maximum fan speed—the unit lasted 3 hours 10 minutes. Less demanding Android or older-console play should last longer, but runtime changes substantially with screen count, refresh rate, brightness and performance mode.

That review measured approximately 63dB maximum fan noise and a peak temperature around 45°C under its test conditions. Sustained high-end emulation can therefore be warm and conspicuous; those figures are not guarantees for every unit or setting.

Closed, the Thor transports like a compact clamshell, but at about 380g it is larger and heavier than a traditional 3DS. Open, its unusual layout puts the controls in the lower half and the main screen above them. Some players will like the DS-like posture; others may prefer a grip accessory or a conventional horizontal handheld. DROIX also notes that the glass-heavy lower section attracts fingerprints.

Which Thor model should you buy?

Base: the default value choice

Choose Base when its live price is close to Lite. It delivers the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform without paying for extra RAM and storage that ordinary emulation may not use.

Pro: for larger installs and multitasking

Pro’s 12GB RAM and 256GB storage suit users with many Android games, emulators, frontends and media files. The extra RAM should not be presented as a dramatic ordinary-emulation performance upgrade.

Max: for a local library

The 512GB and 1TB Max versions are primarily storage and memory upgrades. They make sense if you want a large local library and prefer not to rely heavily on microSD storage.

Lite: only when the discount is real

Lite is not simply the same Thor at a lower price. Compare its live price with Base after accounting for the Snapdragon 865, LPDDR4X, UFS 3.1, Wi-Fi 6 and lower external-display capability. The store showed the selected Lite configuration as backordered when checked.

Thor versus the alternatives

Alternative Why choose it What you give up
AYANEO Pocket DS Direct dual-screen Android comparison; evaluate its current screen, chipset, battery, software, weight, price and support. Potentially higher cost or different software and shipping experience; compare live configurations.
Retroid Pocket Flip 2 Smaller, simpler single-screen Android clamshell for conventional gaming and emulation. No physically separate second screen for authentic DS/3DS layouts.
AYN Odin 2 Portal or Odin 3 Single-screen ergonomics, conventional Android gaming and potentially better fit for performance-focused use. Loses the Thor’s defining dual-screen interface.
Android phone plus controller Uses hardware you may already own, with newer Android software and general-purpose phone features. Does not integrate two screens and may be awkward for DS/3DS layouts.

Availability, warranty and buying checks

AYN’s store currently describes Batch 7 as a pre-order with shipping beginning in August; batch language is not the same as in-stock inventory. Confirm all of the following before payment:

  • Exact processor, RAM and storage SKU.
  • Whether the chosen variant is in stock, backordered or assigned to a future batch.
  • Estimated shipping date, destination shipping cost and possible import taxes.
  • Warranty route and the practical cost of international returns.
  • Refund terms and whether accessories ship separately.

AYN lists a one-year warranty on the product page. The Thor includes no games. Official accessories shown include a self-adhesive stylus at $9.90 when checked, a TPU grip at $15, and an accessories pack that was sold out at that time. A microSD card is a practical storage complement, but do not expect any card to improve emulator performance. A screen protector and microfiber cloth are sensible because the lower glass panel shows fingerprints; verify fit before buying.

Who should buy the AYN Thor?

  • Buy it if DS or 3DS emulation on two separate screens is your main goal.
  • Buy it if you want Android’s open ecosystem and are comfortable configuring emulators.
  • Consider it if you want a clamshell, AMOLED panels and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance without a Windows handheld.
  • Skip it if most of your games use one screen, you want maximum performance per dollar, or you expect a console-like setup.
  • Skip it if you need a genuinely pocketable open device, dislike fan noise and fingerprints, or prefer SteamOS, Windows or native PC compatibility.

The Thor’s value is use-case specific rather than universal. Its second screen adds weight, cost, battery draw, software work and unusual ergonomics; in return, it delivers a form factor that a single-screen Odin, Flip 2 or phone cannot reproduce.

The Bottom Line

The AYN Thor is the most convincing choice for Android enthusiasts who specifically want integrated DS/3DS-style dual-screen play. Start with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Base if its live price is near Lite, move to Pro or Max for storage needs, and choose a single-screen Odin, Retroid or phone-controller setup if the second display is not central to how you play.
