Android phone VR is a small, uneven category in 2026. The list below focuses on Google Cardboard-compatible or phone-based VR, not Meta Quest or PC VR. “Free” is labeled precisely: some entries contain ads, some offer only a free portion, and several older titles may fail on modern phones.
You normally need a Cardboard-style viewer and a phone with a gyroscope. Google’s Cardboard instructions explain viewer pairing and warn that phones without a gyroscope may be incompatible.
What counts as completely free?
Google Play’s Install button does not guarantee unlimited free play. Use these labels when judging the list:

Best choices by need
- Best overall free Cardboard game: VR: Escape from Maze.
- Best exploration: VR Space Game.
- Best atmosphere: VR Cyberpunk City.
- Best horror-themed option: VR Zombie Apocalypse Survival.
- Best simple arcade pick: VR Running Blast, with its old-app warning.
- Best way to test phone VR: VR: Escape from Maze or VR:Dungeon, because both offer normal-screen modes.
Set up Cardboard VR
- Check that the phone has a gyroscope; an accelerometer alone may not provide head tracking.
- Install the official Cardboard app.
- Open it and scan the QR code supplied with your viewer.
- Install a game, launch it once for permissions or calibration, then choose Cardboard, VR or stereoscopic mode.
- Insert the phone into the viewer and recalibrate if the two images do not align.
Troubleshooting and comfort
No VR option
The app may not support Cardboard, the phone may lack a gyroscope, or an old developer build may have lost compatibility with your Android version.

Double vision
Rescan the viewer profile, check lens spacing and try another app. Poorly implemented stereoscopic layouts can also cause the problem; user reports for The Last Commando document this failure mode.
Controls fail
Check whether the title expects screen taps, gaze selection, a magnetic trigger or a Bluetooth gamepad. “Easy controls” does not necessarily mean controller-free.

Heat, stutter or nausea
Lower brightness, close background apps, remove a thick case and take regular breaks. Stop immediately if you feel dizziness, headache, eye strain or nausea.

Cardboard is best treated as an inexpensive experiment platform. It does not provide Quest-style room-scale tracking, hand tracking or a large active multiplayer ecosystem. Store labels, download counts and update dates change; the figures above reflect listings observed on August 16, 2026, and do not guarantee that every phone will run every title.

For a first try, use a Cardboard-compatible viewer and start with VR: Escape from Maze or VR Space Game. Add a Bluetooth controller only for games that explicitly support one, such as The Last Commando.
