It was also loud under load, had weak battery life, and used a plainly plastic chassis. In 2026, it makes sense mainly as a discounted used or clearance machine—and only after confirming the complete SKU.

Do not generalize this review to every AN515-58
Acer sold AN515-58 systems with RTX 3050, RTX 3060, RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 graphics, different 12th-generation Intel processors, DDR4 or DDR5 memory, FHD 144 Hz or QHD 165 Hz screens, and different GPU power limits. For example, the AN515-58-781P pairs an i7-12650H and RTX 4060 with DDR5, a FHD 144 Hz panel and a 140 W GPU limit; it is not the same machine as the 72QR (Acer 781P specifications). Other regional examples include the AN515-58-72YA and an RTX 3050 configuration. Check the full suffix, processor, GPU, screen, RAM type, SSD and wattage before relying on this review.

Design and build quality
The Nitro 5 directs its budget toward performance rather than premium materials. The predominantly matte-black plastic chassis has acceptable construction, even gaps and secure hinges, but the base and lid flex more than on a premium gaming notebook. Its surface shows fingerprints readily. At roughly 5.4–5.5 lb before the power adapter, it is transportable but not light.
The functional design is a reasonable trade-off for the high-power GPU, but buyers expecting an aluminum-feeling body should look at Legion 5 Pro, HP Omen 16 or similar higher-tier machines.
Display: the strongest part of the 72QR
The tested panel is a major reason to choose this particular SKU. It runs at 2560×1440 and 165 Hz, giving games a sharper image than FHD while retaining a high refresh rate.
- Average measured brightness: approximately 303 cd/m².
- Measured contrast: approximately 1,145:1.
- Nearly complete sRGB coverage in Notebookcheck’s measurement.
- No PWM flickering detected.
- Good viewing angles and response times, although the panel is not aimed at the most demanding competitive players.
Color accuracy was imperfect before calibration. It is a good gaming and general-use screen, not a factory-calibrated professional display. Other AN515-58 versions may have a 1920×1080 144 Hz panel instead.

Gaming performance at QHD
For the games tested in 2022, the 72QR delivered smooth QHD play at high or maximum settings. The RTX 3070 Ti’s unusually high 150 W limit is central to that result; an identically named GPU in a lower-power laptop can be materially slower.
Notebookcheck recorded these results on the tested system:
| Test | Measured result |
|---|---|
| 3DMark Time Spy | 10,066 points |
| 3DMark Fire Strike | 22,252 points |
| The Witcher 3, 1080p Ultra | Approximately 107.4 fps in Performance mode with direct dGPU output |
| Cinebench R15 multi-loop | Approximately 2,360 points |
| PCMark 10 | 6,941 points |
| SSD sequential testing | Roughly 5–7 GB/s, depending on benchmark and queue settings |
These are measurements of the original review unit and software environment, not a 2026 performance guarantee. Actual QHD frame rates depend on the game engine, ray tracing, DLSS support, graphics settings, background applications and thermal conditions.
Use the right power and graphics mode
A plugged-in system in NitroSense’s Performance profile generally produces the best results. Switching from hybrid/Optimus graphics to direct output from the discrete GPU can also improve performance in some situations, at the cost of battery consumption and potentially different display behavior. Performance mode requires mains power according to the review. Standard or Quiet modes reduce power and fan activity but are not the preferred choices for maximum frame rates.

CPU and everyday system performance
The Core i7-12700H provides strong productivity performance, and the PCIe 4.0 SSD keeps Windows, applications and game loading responsive. Notebookcheck’s sustained Cinebench testing, however, indicated that the CPU did not always reach its full potential, reflecting the limits of the chassis’ power and cooling balance. That matters more for long CPU-heavy workloads than for GPU-limited QHD gaming.
Noise, heat and power behavior
The principal ownership compromise is acoustics. The Nitro 5 becomes loud under demanding gaming and rendering workloads, especially in Performance mode. It is best treated as a plugged-in gaming machine with active cooling rather than a quiet laptop for shared spaces. Buyers who prioritize low noise should consider a thicker premium design, a lower-power configuration or a desktop PC.
Keyboard, touchpad, webcam and speakers
- Keyboard: Four-zone RGB backlighting, a dedicated number pad, reasonable key travel and a clear pressure point. Some flex and less-than-crisp resistance keep it below premium keyboards.
- Touchpad: Approximately 10.6 × 7.8 cm with multitouch support; adequate for Windows use, while a gaming mouse remains preferable for games.
- Webcam: HD resolution rather than a high-resolution camera.
- Speakers: Functional stereo output, but headphones or external speakers are better for games and media.
Ports and upgradeability
Connectivity is unusually useful for a midrange gaming chassis:
- Three USB-A ports.
- One USB-C port with Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort output and USB-C Power Delivery.
- HDMI output.
- Gigabit Ethernet.
- Combined headset jack.
- Kensington lock slot.
- No memory-card reader.
The reviewed unit has two RAM slots, a second PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot and provision for a 2.5-inch SATA drive. The necessary bracket or cable may vary by region and retail package, so inspect the actual machine before ordering parts. Acer’s AN515-58 user manual documents the service layout.

Practical upgrade choices
The 16 GB dual-channel setup is sufficient for most games. A matched 32 GB DDR4 kit is sensible for video editing, development, modded games or heavy multitasking—but verify that your specific AN515-58 uses DDR4, since other variants use DDR5. Additional game storage can be added through the second M.2 slot or, where hardware is present, the 2.5-inch bay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery life
The 57.5 Wh battery is a weak point. Acer’s official specification lists up to five hours under its stated test conditions, while Notebookcheck characterized real-world battery life as below average. Gaming on battery is not a practical replacement for AC power because performance profiles and GPU power are constrained.
Buying one in 2026
The original approximately US$2,400 / €1,999 price is historical context, not a sensible 2026 target. The exact 72QR is an aging 2022 configuration, so value depends on a substantial discount, battery condition, cooling health and warranty. Acer’s US store has listed an AN515-58-73RS with an i7-12650H, RTX 4050, FHD 144 Hz display, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD at $1,179.99, but that listing was out of stock and is not equivalent to the reviewed QHD model (Acer store listing).
What to compare with it
- Newer Nitro 5 RTX 4050/4060 systems: Usually the safer choice for warranty, availability, efficiency and newer GPU features, but check whether the screen is FHD and confirm the power limit.
- Lenovo Legion 5 or Legion 5 Pro: Often a better fit for chassis quality and sustained cooling.
- HP Omen 16: Worth considering for a more refined design or lighter chassis.
- MSI Vector: Suits buyers prioritizing performance while accepting aggressive fan noise.
- Desktop plus monitor: Better when portability is unnecessary and quiet, sustained performance matters most.
These are comparison categories, not claims of a universal performance or price advantage. Match the GPU wattage, display, warranty and current price.
Used-market inspection checklist
- Confirm the full model suffix is AN515-58-72QR, not merely AN515-58.
- Check battery wear and charging behavior.
- Listen for fan bearing rattle and test for thermal throttling.
- Inspect the QHD panel for dead pixels and excessive backlight bleed.
- Verify the charger’s wattage and authenticity.
- Test every USB port, Ethernet, HDMI, keyboard zone and touchpad.
- Confirm SSD brackets, screws and any 2.5-inch hardware are present.
- Check remaining warranty and regional support eligibility.
Acer’s driver downloads and support FAQs can help identify the machine and obtain firmware or drivers, but support-page availability does not mean the laptop is still sold new.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the AN515-58-72QR?
- Good fit: Buyers prioritizing QHD gaming, high-refresh play, upgradeable storage and memory, Thunderbolt 4 and strong plugged-in performance.
