If Microsoft Edge does not fill your Xbox display, first check the console’s app-border setting—not a Windows-style F11 command. Open Settings → General → TV & display options → Video fidelity & overscan, look for Apps can add a border, and turn it off if available. This setting is frequently reported as the cause of borders around Xbox apps, although menu wording and availability can vary by console software version (Microsoft Community; Xbox user report).

“Not full screen” can also mean a visible browser toolbar, black bars inside a video, a cropped picture, or margins created by the website. Each has a different fix.

Identify what is not filling the screen

What you see Most likely cause
A border surrounds the entire Edge window or other apps Xbox app-border, output, overscan, or TV picture-size setting
The address bar and controls remain visible Xbox Edge interface behavior; not necessarily a display fault
Black bars appear only inside a video Video aspect ratio or the player’s own full-screen behavior
The image edges are cut off TV zoom or overscan
The picture looks widened or squashed Incorrect TV picture-size or stretch mode
Edge fills the screen but the page has margins The website’s layout, such as a centered fixed-width design

Turn off the Xbox app border

The exact label can differ between Xbox One, Series S, Series X, language settings, and system updates. Look for the following path:

  1. Press the Xbox button.
  2. Open Profile & system → Settings.
  3. Select General, then TV & display options.
  4. Open Video fidelity & overscan.
  5. Find Apps can add a border and switch it off, if present.
  6. Quit Edge completely and reopen it. If the border remains, restart the console.

Community troubleshooting reports identify this option as a common cause of inset app images, but it is not confirmed as a permanent control on every current Xbox software version (Series S discussion; Xbox One discussion).

Check Xbox output and TV scaling

Verify the console display output

Return to Settings → General → TV & display options. Confirm that Xbox detects the display correctly and is using its recommended resolution and a refresh rate supported by the TV or monitor. There is no universal resolution or refresh-rate choice: the correct setting depends on the Xbox model, display, HDMI port, cable, and any equipment in between.

Choose a pixel-accurate TV picture mode

Open the television’s picture-size or aspect-ratio menu and choose the mode that shows the complete HDMI image without zooming. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be called 16:9, Screen Fit, Just Scan, 1:1, Full Pixel, Original, or Fit to Screen. Avoid Zoom or Wide Zoom unless you deliberately accept cropping. Microsoft Community troubleshooting also recommends checking both Xbox and TV display configuration when Edge appears incorrectly sized (Microsoft Community).

If only a video has black bars

Start playback, move the controller or pointer to reveal the player controls, and select the player’s full-screen icon. A video can retain horizontal or vertical bars when its shape differs from the television. Filling every pixel may require cropping the sides or stretching faces and objects, and some websites block full-screen playback. Edge cannot override those player or content decisions.

F11, Edge zoom and Xbox controls

Microsoft documents F11 as a desktop Edge full-screen toggle and also exposes Settings and more → Full screen in desktop accessibility documentation (keyboard shortcuts; accessibility features). Those pages do not establish that F11 is an Xbox-console command. Microsoft’s Xbox guide describes controller navigation, scrolling and zooming, but does not document a dedicated Xbox F11 workflow (Edge on Xbox guide).

Page zoom changes the size of webpage text and controls; it does not remove a physical border around the Xbox output. Desktop Edge documents Ctrl + Plus, Ctrl + Minus, and Ctrl + 0 for zoom, but these are not guaranteed Xbox-console shortcuts.

Recovery steps when the border persists

  1. Quit Edge and launch it again after changing display settings.
  2. Power-cycle both the Xbox and TV.
  3. Try another HDMI input and, if possible, another cable.
  4. Connect the Xbox directly to the TV temporarily, bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or capture device.
  5. Open another Xbox app. If every app has the same border, the problem is system-wide rather than Edge-specific.
  6. Install any available Xbox system update and retest.

When Edge cannot fix the problem

  • A TV locked to the wrong picture-size or overscan mode.
  • A video encoded in an aspect ratio that naturally produces bars.
  • A website using fixed-width content or intentional margins.
  • A console-wide output configuration problem.
  • A faulty HDMI cable, port, receiver, switch, or display input.
  • A limitation of the Xbox version of Edge’s browser interface.

If all apps show borders, the selected resolution will not hold, or direct HDMI testing still fails, contact Xbox support or the TV manufacturer. Managed Windows kiosk options are not Xbox solutions; Microsoft’s kiosk documentation applies to Windows Edge deployments (Microsoft kiosk documentation).
