ASUS and Xbox’s ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 gaming handheld PCs, not conventional Xbox consoles. They combine ASUS hardware with an Xbox-focused interface while retaining access to PC Game Pass, the Microsoft Store, Steam, Battle.net, Epic Games Store, GOG and other Windows software.
The standard Ally is the value model, with a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of memory, 512GB storage and a 60Wh battery. The Ally X raises those specifications to a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and 80Wh, alongside a higher US price.
What are the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X?
Microsoft and ASUS revealed the two handhelds on June 8, 2025. ASUS manufactures and sells the hardware, while Xbox supplies the software and ecosystem integration. Microsoft describes the products as Windows 11 handheld PCs with an Xbox full-screen experience, Xbox controls and access to Xbox services.
That distinction matters: neither device runs the same console operating system as an Xbox Series X|S. Windows remains underneath the controller-first interface, so users can install desktop applications, mods, browsers and multiple game launchers.

Memory is onboard and not user-upgradable. Both systems use an M.2 2280 SSD, making internal storage the practical upgrade path, although replacing it can require Windows and game reinstallation or recovery. Battery capacity is not a runtime promise: game load, power mode, brightness, refresh rate and frame-rate target determine endurance. Likewise, a 120Hz panel does not mean demanding games will run at 120 frames per second. Official specifications do not establish a universal frame-rate advantage for either model.
USB display descriptions differ slightly between regional ASUS and Xbox pages, so verify the exact configuration in your market before buying a dock or monitor.
What the Xbox full-screen experience does
The Xbox full-screen experience is a handheld-focused layer over Windows 11. It opens to a controller-friendly gaming surface instead of the traditional desktop and ties into the Xbox button, Xbox Game Bar and Library controls.
- Aggregates installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other PC storefronts.
- Provides quick access to Xbox Game Bar features and handheld controls.
- Lets users return to the Windows desktop for launchers, settings, files, mods and ordinary applications.
- Offers a console-style starting point without removing Windows desktop behavior.
Xbox’s feature description is available in the August 2025 handheld announcement.

Which stores and game services are supported?
Xbox, Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass
The Xbox PC app and Microsoft Store support locally installed Windows games. PC Game Pass access depends on the subscriber’s plan, the game’s catalog status, whether a PC version exists, region and publisher licensing. Cloud gaming additionally requires a supported subscription, device, internet connection and region; it cannot provide offline play.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Supported Play Anywhere titles can provide one purchase across Xbox consoles and Windows PC, with shared saves and achievements according to the game’s support. Play Anywhere does not convert every Xbox console purchase into a PC license.
Steam, Epic, GOG and Battle.net
Because these are Windows PCs, users can install Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect and other Windows launchers. Xbox specifically names Battle.net in the aggregated library, while ASUS materials list Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store and GOG compatibility.
Each launcher still requires its own installation, account, updates and troubleshooting. Anti-cheat, sign-in and controller support can vary by game. Windows also permits Discord, Twitch, browsers, mods and other desktop applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Relevant platform details are documented by Windows Experience, Xbox Wire and ASUS’s 2025 product guide.
Can it play Xbox console games?
Only in specific ways:
- Play Anywhere: a supported title can grant a Windows entitlement with shared saves and achievements.
- Windows PC version: a game may be locally installed through the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store.
- Cloud gaming: a supported subscription and reliable internet stream the game rather than installing it.
- Remote play: a separate Xbox console can stream its installed games to the handheld over a network.
An Xbox console-only purchase does not automatically guarantee local installation on either ROG Xbox Ally model.
Controls, ergonomics and display
Both handhelds use contoured grips inspired by Xbox Wireless Controllers, full-size analog sticks, ABXY buttons, a D-pad, Xbox, View, Menu, Command Center and Library buttons, two assignable rear buttons, HD haptics and a six-axis IMU.
The standard model is listed with Hall Effect analog triggers, while the Ally X is described with impulse triggers on Xbox’s comparison page. Marketing terminology can differ between regional listings, so confirm the final specification for your market.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which model should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally when
- $599.99 is the main budget limit.
- You play lighter, older, indie or well-optimized PC games.
- 512GB is acceptable or you are comfortable replacing the SSD.
- The 60Wh battery and 670g weight suit your use.
- You want Xbox-oriented software without paying for premium hardware.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when
- You want 24GB memory, a 1TB SSD and the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme.
- Newer or more demanding PC games are a priority.
- The larger 80Wh battery matters more than the extra 45g.
- USB4 is useful for docks, displays or peripherals.
- You want the Ally X’s NPU for software features such as supported Auto SR workloads.
- The $999.99 US price is competitive with other premium Windows handhelds you are considering.
The Ally X’s stronger processor does not guarantee proportional gains in every game: power limits, thermals, integrated graphics allocation and game optimization remain decisive.
Practical limitations and troubleshooting
When a game appears in the library but will not launch
- Open it through its original launcher and confirm the correct account is signed in.
- Install updates for Windows, the Xbox PC app, Armoury Crate SE, graphics drivers and the launcher.
- Check the game’s PC requirements and anti-cheat support.
- Use touch, a mouse, keyboard or Gamepad Cursor if the launcher lacks controller navigation.
- Verify or repair files in the original storefront.
- For cloud play, test network quality and subscription eligibility.
A library entry does not prove that a game is installed, has a PC build or supports the current handheld configuration.
Battery, storage and Windows trade-offs
- The 60Wh and 80Wh figures cannot be converted into a fixed number of gaming hours.
- Modern games can fill 512GB quickly; a 1TB SSD provides more headroom, while both drives are replaceable M.2 2280 units.
- Windows enables broad storefront and mod support but can require desktop interaction, launcher updates and separate sign-ins.
- Cloud gaming is sensitive to latency, Wi-Fi congestion, data caps and regional availability.
Docking requirements
For TV output, Ethernet, USB peripherals or multiple displays, budget for a USB-C dock or hub, a sufficiently powerful charger, compatible cables and a display. Resolution, HDR, refresh rate and performance can change when docked.

Software updates since launch
Xbox’s April 30, 2026 update added or improved TV docking behavior that moves gameplay to the television and turns off the handheld display, better TV resolution, refresh-rate and HDR handling, an improved aggregated library, Gamepad Cursor for controller-unfriendly apps, enhanced vibration and Auto SR preview support.
Auto SR is intended to upscale supported games and balance image quality with performance; it is not a universal enhancement for every title. The latest behavior requires current versions of Armoury Crate SE, the Xbox PC app, Game Bar and Windows 11. See the April 2026 Xbox update.
Alternatives to consider
| Alternative | Better fit when | Trade-off versus ROG Xbox Ally |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck | You prioritize SteamOS, Steam integration and a console-like software flow. | Xbox PC Game Pass, Battle.net and Windows-only launchers may require additional work. |
| Lenovo Legion Go and other Windows handhelds | You prefer a different screen size, detachable controls, kickstand or port layout. | You may not get the same Xbox-integrated interface and support path. |
| Earlier ASUS ROG Ally models | You find clearance or refurbished pricing and do not need the new Xbox layer. | Older Ryzen hardware and software experience; value depends on the actual discount. |
| Gaming laptop | You need sustained performance, a keyboard, productivity software, larger storage or easier expansion. | Less convenient for integrated-controller, couch and portable play. |
Verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally pair is best understood as Xbox convenience layered over flexible Windows handheld PCs. The standard model delivers the lower-cost route to that experience, while the Ally X buys more memory, storage, battery capacity, processing headroom and USB4 at a substantially higher price. Neither plays every Xbox console game automatically, but both can combine Xbox services with major PC storefronts in a single portable device.
