You can use a browser to visit the Old School RuneScape website and begin the setup, but current OSRS normally does not run inside a Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari tab. The official Play Now button hands you off to an installed desktop client. For a no-install option, use the official iPhone, iPad, or Android app instead.
Can OSRS run directly in a browser?
There are three different meanings of “play OSRS in a browser”:

The official site’s desktop navigation uses Download Old School, while its game page includes Play Now and explains that the game should start after installation. That is a launcher handoff, not a modern HTML5 version embedded in the page: OSRS homepage and OSRS game page.
Some older RuneScape pages still mention playing “with Java.” That wording describes a legacy route and is not a practical recommendation for current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari users: legacy RuneScape page. Do not install random Java applets, disable browser security, or enter your credentials into a site claiming to provide an “OSRS browser client.”

The quickest official way to play on Windows or macOS
- Open the official Old School RuneScape website.
- Select Download Old School.
- Install the official client or the Jagex Launcher if the current flow offers it.
- Open the application from the Windows Start menu, macOS Applications folder, or the launcher.
- Sign in with your existing RuneScape credentials or Jagex Account. Check the account email and character before creating anything new.
- Select Old School RuneScape, choose the available client option, and press Play.
- Choose a world and log in.
Labels and launcher screens can change, but this client-first process is the current standard desktop route. If installation completes but no window appears, the official installation page says to look for the game icon in the Start menu: installation guidance.
Official client or RuneLite?

Jagex’s launcher advertises RuneLite and HDOS as integrated OSRS options: Jagex Launcher. You can also obtain RuneLite from its official site: runelite.net.
Download only from those sources or from the launcher. Search advertisements, unofficial mirrors, fake launchers, and clients that request your Jagex password outside the expected login flow are common phishing or malware risks. RuneLite’s availability through an approved launcher does not make every plugin or third-party mirror first-party; review plugin permissions and settings yourself.

Can I play through Steam?
Yes. OSRS has an official Steam distribution and is listed as free-to-play with optional membership products: OSRS on Steam.

- Install Steam.
- Open the official OSRS Steam listing and choose Play Game or add it to your library.
- Install and launch OSRS.
- Sign in or complete the account-linking flow shown by the game.
Steam is convenient if your games already live there, and it provides library and overlay integration. It adds another storefront and account layer, however, and should not be assumed to offer every RuneLite feature. The Steam support listing currently signals 64-bit Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 Big Sur or later; check the live requirements because they can change: Steam technical requirements.
Can I play on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The official OSRS Mobile page links to the Apple App Store and Google Play: OSRS Mobile.

- On Android, use its Google Play link.
- Sign in with the same account used on desktop to continue the same progress.
- Expect a touch-optimized interface rather than an identical desktop layout.
Mobile is convenient for short sessions, travel, and many skilling activities. Mouse-and-keyboard play can be more comfortable for high-precision or information-heavy activities. Device and operating-system eligibility changes, so use the current store listing rather than an old handset list.
Chromebook, Linux, school, and work computers
Chromebook
There is no universal browser-only solution. Depending on the model, ChromeOS configuration, and permissions, you may have access to the Android app, Linux software, or Steam. Compatibility is not guaranteed.
Linux
The Jagex Launcher page advertises Windows and Mac downloads, not a native Linux download. Wine, Proton, Steam, and community launchers may work for some users but can break after updates; treat them as unsupported workarounds rather than guaranteed official support.

Managed or shared computers
If you cannot install software, do not bypass administrator controls. Ask the administrator, use an approved managed installation, or play on an owned computer or mobile device. Never save credentials on an untrusted public machine.
Remote desktop and cloud-browser services can add latency and expose account data. They are not standard official OSRS solutions, and school or workplace rules may prohibit them.

- Open the official client or Jagex Launcher manually from the operating system’s application list.
- Return to the official download page and install the client if it is missing.
- Restart both the browser and launcher.
- Check whether the browser blocked an external-application launch prompt.
- Ensure cookies and JavaScript are enabled for the official OSRS site.
- Update the client or launcher and try launching directly again.
- Consider antivirus, firewall, endpoint-management, or unsupported-operating-system restrictions.
- For account or authentication errors, use Jagex Support.
Do not install Java solely because an old page mentions it. Current desktop installation should use the official client or launcher.
Do I need membership?
No. OSRS has free-to-play worlds and content; membership is optional. The Steam listing describes the base game as free-to-play and offers membership products: Steam listing.
Membership pricing depends on region, currency, taxes, billing term, promotions, and whether you buy through Jagex, Steam, or another supported storefront. Check the live purchase page for the applicable price rather than relying on a universal figure.
