How each group works
Yellow: Cook with dry heat
Each yellow entry describes a dry-heat cooking method or the browning result produced by one. The words can function as verbs in instructions or as descriptions of food.
Green: Familial nicknames
These are informal shortened forms used for family relationships: a cousin, grandmother, father or uncle.
Blue: U.S. state-name shortenings
Read as clipped forms of state names rather than standard postal codes. Each is a recognizable opening of a state: Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania or Washington.
#1 Best Overall
Purple: Punch
The final group mixes boxing-related language with words that can mean hitting. The category is deliberately broad: a punch, to punch, or someone delivering punches.
Why this grid is tricky
- BROWN can evoke college names or colors, but its cooking sense fits the yellow set.
- DUKE may look like a school reference, yet here it belongs with punch-related terms.
- PENN can suggest a university or surname; its role is a shortening of Pennsylvania.
- MISS can be a title or a verb, while in this puzzle it is the beginning of Mississippi.
Connections rewards finding one precise shared sense for all four entries. When a word appears to fit several themes, prefer the interpretation that leaves a clean, exact group of four and avoids forcing a single outlier.
