Usually, no. New PC buyers generally purchase Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, which includes Java Edition, Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), and the Minecraft Launcher. You can install and play only Java, but there is normally no cheaper Java-only PC checkout option.
What the PC purchase includes
The standard PC entitlement is tied to a Microsoft account and includes:
- Minecraft: Java Edition
- Minecraft for Windows, the Bedrock Edition for Windows
- The Minecraft Launcher
The U.S. storefront has listed the Standard product at about $29.99 or more, but the final price depends on region, tax, promotions, and storefront changes. See the official PC product page and Xbox product listing.
How to buy it when you only want Java
- Open the official Minecraft buying page or the Minecraft PC product page.
- Select Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC — Standard Edition.
- Sign in with, or create, the Microsoft account that should own the game.
- Complete the purchase.
- Download and open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the Launcher and install it.
Buying the bundle does not require you to use Bedrock. It is simply the normal permanent-license route for Java on PC.

Why store pages can be confusing
“Minecraft: Java Edition”
Xbox may display a Java-labeled store page, but the current PC purchase path identifies the product as the combined Java-and-Bedrock edition. Check the included products before paying.
“Minecraft for Windows”
This name refers to Bedrock, not Java. Microsoft’s Minecraft for Windows listing is the Windows Bedrock product.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes the base game, five add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O’ Blocks, Decocraft, and Weapons + Tools), five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
- CREATE — Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, and craft your way through a world filled with surprises in the ultimate sandbox game.
- SURVIVE — Experience unforgettable adventures as you face mysterious foes, traverse exciting landscapes, and travel to perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Have a blast with friends, whether you’re sitting on the same couch in split screen or miles apart in cross-platform play for console, mobile, and PC.
Deluxe and Ultimate Collections
Deluxe and Ultimate still contain the same Java-and-Bedrock base game. Their higher U.S. storefront signals—about $39.99 or more for Deluxe and $49.99 or more for Ultimate—pay for Bedrock-oriented Marketplace content such as add-ons, skins, and Minecoins. They do not provide a better or separate Java edition, so Standard is normally the sensible choice for a Java-focused buyer.
Windows, macOS, and Linux
| Platform | What you can use from the PC purchase |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Java and Bedrock |
| macOS | Java; the bundled Bedrock product is Minecraft for Windows |
| Linux | Java; the bundled Bedrock product is Minecraft for Windows |
Java multiplayer is designed for Windows, macOS, and Linux players. Bedrock has its own multiplayer network across supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms. Ordinary Java-to-Bedrock multiplayer is not supported; see the edition comparison.

If you already own Minecraft
You already own Java on PC
Do not buy again immediately. Install the Launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the purchase. A prior PC purchase should remain available on another computer. If Java was migrated from a Mojang account, continued play uses the Microsoft-account system; see Minecraft’s account-migration guidance.
You own Bedrock on PC
Check that same Microsoft account in the Launcher before purchasing. PC ownership and console or mobile ownership are different cases, and entitlement history can vary.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
You own Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, or Android
Do not assume that ownership on another platform includes the PC Java entitlement. Sign in and verify the PC license on the relevant Microsoft account.
The game is missing from the Launcher
- Confirm the Launcher account is the exact account used for purchase.
- Check the Launcher’s account selector and Microsoft purchase history.
- Make sure the Microsoft Store and Launcher are not using conflicting accounts.
- Only purchase again after the entitlement has been verified.
Java worlds and Minecraft for Windows saves are not automatically interchangeable. Microsoft’s Minecraft for Windows listing warns that Java saves are not compatible with that edition; back up worlds before attempting any conversion.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Can PC Game Pass provide Java without buying it?
Potentially. PC Game Pass can provide catalog access to Minecraft while the subscription is active and while the game remains in the catalog. Availability depends on region, plan, platform, and time; it is not permanent ownership. Xbox listed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month in its April 21, 2026 price announcement, subject to regional pricing and later changes. See PC Game Pass and the Xbox price update.
- Useful for: trying Java, playing temporarily, or using a subscription you already have.
- Not suitable for: permanent access or avoiding subscriptions; access ends if the subscription expires or Minecraft leaves the catalog.
Which edition should you use?
| Your priority | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Community mods, Java servers, and PC-focused play | Java Edition |
| Console or mobile cross-play and Marketplace content | Bedrock Edition |
| Permanent Java access on a Windows PC | Standard Java & Bedrock PC bundle |
| Short-term testing or an existing Game Pass subscription | PC Game Pass, if available |
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You generally cannot buy a cheaper Java-only PC license, but you can buy the Standard Java & Bedrock bundle and use only Java. Choose Standard rather than Deluxe or Ultimate unless you specifically want Bedrock Marketplace extras, and check your Microsoft account and Launcher before repurchasing.
