Epic said it was investigating account-login failures affecting Fortnite, Rocket League and other Epic Games Store titles. At the time, the only reported immediate steps were to close and reopen the game and restart the Epic Games Store launcher. If you see the message now, check Epic’s live service status before changing account settings or reinstalling anything.
As of August 18, 2026, Epic listed Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, Epic Online Services authentication and Epic account authentication as operational. The status page instead showed degraded Epic Games Store downloading and updating for some Windows 10 users, not a broad “Invalid Client” login incident: Epic Games Public Status.
Was Epic Games actually down?
Yes, Epic acknowledged a login problem on April 6, 2021. Contemporary coverage quoted Fortnite Status saying Epic was investigating account-login failures that produced “Invalid Client.” The report specifically named Fortnite, Rocket League and other Epic Games Store titles: Tech Times’ April 6, 2021 report.
That event should not be presented as happening today. A current diagnosis depends on which status component is affected:

What “Invalid Client” means
In plain language, the message means Epic’s authentication system could not validate the game client or login session. It does not automatically mean your account was banned, hacked or permanently damaged. Depending on the platform, possible causes include:

- A server-side authentication failure.
- An expired sign-in session.
- An outdated or unofficial client.
- Corrupted launcher data.
- Network, DNS, VPN, proxy or security-software interference.
Epic has not published one universal technical definition that applies identically to every platform. Android has a specific documented cause: Epic says the error can occur when the Epic Games Store app is unofficial or outdated.
What to do during a suspected Epic outage
If the status page confirms a login or authentication incident, avoid repeated password resets, account unlinking and game reinstalls. Those actions cannot repair an Epic-side failure and may create new access problems.

- Open status.epicgames.com and check Login, authentication and the affected game.
- Fully close the game.
- On PC, exit Epic Games Launcher from its system-tray icon as well as its window.
- Reopen the launcher and game, then try signing in once.
- Restart the PC, console or mobile device.
- Wait for Epic’s incident resolution if the affected component remains degraded.
During the April 6, 2021 incident, closing and reopening the game and restarting the Epic Games Store launcher were the only immediate remedies reported while Epic investigated; no confirmed user-side fix was available.
If Epic services are operational
Refresh the launcher session
- Sign out of Epic Games Launcher rather than merely closing its window.
- Reopen it and sign in with the intended Epic account.
- Complete any pending email-verification or two-factor-authentication prompt.
- If you recently changed your password, enabled 2FA or changed a linked account, perform a fresh sign-in on every affected device.
Check that a PlayStation Network, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, Google, Apple or Facebook login is linked to the Epic account you actually use. Do not unlink accounts casually; ask Epic Support before making a change that could affect access.

Update and verify
- Install all pending Epic Games Launcher and game updates.
- If only one installed game fails, use Library → three-dot menu → Manage → Verify, where those labels appear in your launcher version.
- Do not reinstall the entire game as a first step. Verification can repair damaged local files, but it cannot fix an authentication outage.
Clear the Windows launcher web cache
Do this only after checking service status and restarting the launcher. It may remove corrupted local session data and will normally require you to sign in again.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher completely, including its system-tray process.
- Open
%localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete only folders named
webcacheorwebcache_4147if present. - Do not delete the entire Epic Games directory.
- Reopen the launcher and authenticate again.
Android-specific fix
Do not apply this procedure to PC or console users. Epic’s official Android guidance says an unofficial or outdated Epic Games Store app can trigger “Something went wrong” or “Invalid Client.”

- Uninstall the current Epic Games Store app.
- Download the official app from Epic’s Android download page.
- Install the current official version and try Fortnite again.
- If the error remains, follow the public-DNS guidance in Epic’s Android support article.
Network and security checks
These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed cures. Never leave security software disabled permanently.
- Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily and retry.
- Restart the router.
- Test a trusted mobile hotspot or another network.
- If the error disappears on the alternate connection, investigate the original Wi-Fi, ISP or network filtering.
- On Windows, open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns. - Check that the device date and time are set automatically; an incorrect clock can interfere with secure authentication.
- On school, work, hotel or public networks, ask whether firewall or web filtering blocks Epic services. Prefer an explicit allow rule over disabling protection.
How to distinguish an account problem

A green status page does not rule out a regional, account-specific or newly emerging problem, so use cross-device and alternate-network tests rather than assuming the service is perfect.
When to contact Epic Support
Contact Epic through the Fortnite technical-support hub when:
- The error continues for several hours after the status page returns to normal.
- Browser login also fails.
- The problem persists across multiple devices and networks.
- You have ownership, email-verification, 2FA or account-security trouble.
- The problem began after a password, email or linked-account change.
- You see a separate ban, sanction or parental-control message.
Include the exact error text, platform and device, region, approximate start time and time zone, affected games, whether browser login works, whether another network works, and screenshots with email addresses and account identifiers redacted.
Which Epic games are affected?
For the April 6, 2021 incident, the available report confirmed Fortnite, Rocket League and other Epic Games Store titles. A future incident may affect a different subset. Check the components listed on Epic’s status page—currently including Fortnite, Rocket League, Rocket League Sideswipe, Fall Guys, Epic Games Store, Epic Online Services and account authentication—rather than assuming every Epic title is down.
