If Microsoft Sudoku will not open, freezes on its splash screen, or crashes during a puzzle, follow the least-destructive Store-app sequence: restart Windows, install Windows and Microsoft Store updates, use Repair, then consider Reset, clear the Store cache with wsreset.exe, and reinstall only if necessary. Microsoft’s current guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so compatibility and support expectations differ.
Before you start
- Confirm you are troubleshooting the Microsoft Store release, not an installer downloaded from an unofficial website.
- Save work in other applications, then restart Windows. A pending update or stuck process can prevent a Store app from launching.
- Note whether Microsoft Sudoku alone fails or whether Microsoft Store and other Store apps fail too. That distinction determines whether you should treat this as an app problem or a Windows/Store problem.
- Do not use Reset or reinstall until you have considered unsynchronized progress. Those actions may remove locally stored app data, settings, cached state, or statistics; signing in again does not guarantee every local item returns.
There is no current official evidence of a universal Microsoft Sudoku outage. A failure is more likely to involve the app package, local data, Store cache, account authorization, an update, or Windows components.
Fix 1 — Restart Windows and close a stuck process
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- After Windows returns, open Microsoft Sudoku again.
- If nothing happens, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the process list, select a visibly stuck Microsoft Sudoku or Microsoft Store process, choose End task, and try the game again.
This is a low-risk way to clear a hung launch or a restart that has not fully completed.
Fix 2 — Update Windows and Microsoft Store
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, then restart even if Windows does not immediately request it.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart.
Microsoft’s Store-app procedure is documented at Microsoft’s app-from-Store troubleshooting page. Windows 10 may still run the game, but Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025; it no longer receives Microsoft’s normal free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

Update Store apps
- Open Microsoft Store.
- On Windows 11, select Library > Get updates.
- On some Windows 10 builds, select See more (…) > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
- Let Microsoft Store and Microsoft Sudoku finish updating, restart Windows, and test the game.
Menu names can differ by Windows edition, build, and Store version.
Fix 3 — Repair Microsoft Sudoku
Repair is the preferred app-level fix because it is less destructive than Reset.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Sudoku.
- Select its … menu, then Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch Sudoku again.
Windows 10
The equivalent may be Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Sudoku > Advanced options. The exact labels depend on the Windows build. Microsoft describes the repair path in its Windows app repair guidance.

Fix 4 — Reset Microsoft Sudoku only after Repair fails
- Return to Microsoft Sudoku’s Advanced options page.
- Select Reset and confirm the warning.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Sudoku and sign in again if prompted.
Reset recreates the app’s state and is stronger than Repair, but it may remove locally stored progress, settings, cached data, or other unsynchronized information. Microsoft account sign-in may restore synchronized information, but do not assume every local setting or statistic will return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 5 — Clear the Microsoft Store cache
Use this when Microsoft Store itself will not open, update, or install apps, or when Store behavior is clearly stuck. It targets the Store cache, not Microsoft Sudoku’s app data.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- A blank Command Prompt window may remain for about ten seconds. Wait; do not close it prematurely.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically. Search for Microsoft Sudoku and try updating or reinstalling it.
Microsoft documents this procedure at I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.

Fix 6 — Reinstall Microsoft Sudoku
Reinstall after updating, Repair, Reset (if appropriate), and clearing the Store cache. Reinstallation can replace damaged package files or registration, but it is not guaranteed to fix every cause and may affect local data.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Search for Microsoft Sudoku, or open Library and locate it there.
- Select Install or Get.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch Sudoku and test it before changing other settings.
Use Microsoft Store or an official Microsoft page only. Do not download a purported “Microsoft Sudoku installer” from a random website.

A missing Get or Install button may indicate availability or authorization rather than a crash. Microsoft lists these possibilities:
Rank #4
- The app is unavailable in your country or region.
- Family settings hide or restrict it.
- You are signed into a different Microsoft account than the one that owns or installed it.
- The app was removed or is temporarily unavailable.
- The device or Windows edition is incompatible.
- Windows was updated but the required restart has not happened.
- The PC is not authorized to use Store apps.
Check the following in order:
- Confirm the Microsoft account shown in Microsoft Store.
- Restart after any Windows update.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library and look for Sudoku there.
- Verify the PC’s date, time, region, internet connection, and family-management settings.
- Try installing another free Store app. If several fail, stop treating Sudoku as an isolated problem.
Do not change your region casually; region changes can affect app availability, purchases, and account behavior. Work, school, or family-managed PCs may require an administrator to permit Store access or installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the game is launched through Xbox or Game Pass
Use the normal Microsoft Store sequence when Sudoku is installed from Microsoft Store. If it fails only when launched through the Xbox app, update or repair the Xbox app and investigate Xbox identity or Gaming Services in that specific scenario. Microsoft’s Xbox support portal is support.xbox.com.
Do not remove Gaming Services as a universal Sudoku fix. The available guidance does not establish that every Store installation of Microsoft Sudoku depends on it. If multiple Xbox or Game Pass games fail, the issue may be Xbox, Gaming Services, or account-related rather than Sudoku itself.

If Sudoku opens but crashes during play
Update Windows and the game before resetting. Then identify the boundary of the failure:
- Does it crash before or after Microsoft account sign-in?
- Does it happen in every mode or only after loading a particular puzzle?
- Does it work offline but fail when sign-in or online features are involved?
- Do other Microsoft Store apps remain stable?
A crash after a bad update or corrupted local data can respond to Repair or Reset, but those are possibilities, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Record your Windows edition and build, the exact timing, any error code, whether Microsoft Store opens, whether other Store apps work, and what changed immediately before the problem.
If every Microsoft Store app fails
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run
wsreset.exe. - If available, use Microsoft Store’s own Advanced options to choose Repair, then Reset if necessary.
- Test Store apps in a new Windows user profile. A working new profile points toward account-specific corruption.
- Contact Microsoft support with the error code and the steps already completed.
- Only after backing up important files, consider broader Windows repair or Reset this PC > Keep my files.
Do not routinely delete protected WindowsApps folders, edit the registry, or paste unverified PowerShell removal commands from forums. Those actions can remove packages for all users, break dependencies, or create a larger Store problem.
When to stop troubleshooting
Escalate to Microsoft support or your system administrator when no Store apps launch, Store cannot install anything, the same failure occurs in another Windows profile, recurring app-package or system errors appear, or the problem began with broader Windows corruption. Include your Windows version and build, account context, error text, and a concise list of attempted fixes.
