Yes. A Nintendo Switch can use an iPhone or Android phone’s mobile hotspot as a Wi‑Fi network. Turn on the phone’s hotspot, then select it on the Switch through System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings. You need cellular data, a plan that allows tethering, and a sufficiently strong signal; Nintendo warns that mobile-hotspot reliability varies with signal strength (Nintendo support).
Before you start
- A Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2.
- A phone with working cellular data and hotspot/tethering enabled by its carrier plan.
- The hotspot’s network name and password.
- The phone and console close together, preferably with the phone connected to power. Hotspot use can drain a battery quickly.
All Switch traffic uses your phone’s cellular connection. Your carrier may restrict tethering, throttle it, charge separately, or impose a plan-specific allowance (Google Android Help). Large game downloads and updates can consume substantial data.
The original Switch family supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi‑Fi and lists 802.11b/g/n/ac, WEP, WPA‑PSK(AES), and WPA2‑PSK(AES) compatibility (Nintendo’s Internet Connection FAQ). Do not assume those exact security capabilities apply to Switch 2; if a Switch 2 hotspot fails, try the phone’s compatibility or 2.4GHz mode first.
Turn on the phone’s hotspot
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Personal Hotspot. On some configurations, use Settings → Cellular → Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Note the Wi‑Fi password shown on that screen.
- Leave the Personal Hotspot screen open while connecting the Switch.
Apple uses the iPhone’s device name as the hotspot’s Wi‑Fi name, and displays the password in Personal Hotspot settings (Apple Support).

- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
For an iPhone 12 or later, Maximize Compatibility is a fallback, not a requirement. It limits the hotspot to 2.4GHz (and disables 6GHz where applicable) and uses WPA2 Personal, which can help older clients connect but may reduce speed and security (Apple Personal Hotspot troubleshooting; Apple security guide).
Android
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Tap Hotspot or Wi‑Fi hotspot. If it is not visible, tap Edit and add the tile.
- Touch and hold the tile to view or change the hotspot name and password.
- Where your phone provides them, review the security, band, visibility, and automatic-timeout settings.
- Keep the hotspot enabled while the Switch connects.
Labels and menu locations differ among Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, and other phones. Google’s general instructions cover enabling the Wi‑Fi hotspot and joining it from another device (Google Android Help).
If the original Switch cannot see or join the hotspot, choose 2.4GHz or 2.4GHz compatibility mode, if available. Prefer WPA2-Personal/WPA2-PSK over WPA3-only for that console generation, keep the network visible, and use a simple temporary name and password made from ordinary letters and numbers.

Connect the Switch
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet.
- Select Internet Settings.
- Wait for nearby networks, then select the phone’s hotspot name.
- Enter the current hotspot password with the onscreen keyboard.
- Wait for the connection test to finish and select OK.
This is a normal Wi‑Fi connection; do not pair the Switch with the phone through Bluetooth or connect it by USB. Nintendo’s wireless setup uses this same network-selection path (Nintendo wireless setup).
A successful test, a saved or selected hotspot network, and a loading eShop or other online service confirm internet access. A Nintendo Account is not required merely to connect, although eShop access and many online features require one.
If the Switch cannot find the hotspot
- Confirm that mobile data works on the phone and that the hotspot is enabled.
- Keep the phone’s hotspot settings screen open and move the console close to it.
- On the Switch’s Internet Settings screen, press Y to search again.
- Turn the Switch’s Wi‑Fi off and on, then restart both devices.
- On iPhone, try Settings → Personal Hotspot → Maximize Compatibility.
- On Android, try 2.4GHz mode, make sure the network is not hidden, and check whether the hotspot has reached its device limit.
Nintendo specifically recommends searching again and moving closer to the access point when a network is missing (Nintendo wireless troubleshooting).

If the hotspot name is gray
A gray network name usually indicates an unsupported wireless security type rather than a weak signal. On an original Switch, avoid WPA3-only and TKIP configurations; use WPA2-Personal/AES when the phone exposes that option. iPhone’s Maximize Compatibility mode is the practical fallback. Nintendo’s original-Switch documentation lists WPA2-PSK(AES), not WPA3 (Nintendo setup guide; Nintendo FAQ).
If the Switch rejects the password
- Reopen the phone’s hotspot settings and read the current password; do not rely on an old screenshot.
- Check capitalization and accidental spaces.
- Temporarily use a simple ASCII password.
- On the Switch, forget the saved network and connect again.
- Remember that changing an iPhone’s device name changes the hotspot name, while the password remains the value shown in Personal Hotspot settings (Apple Support).
If the connection test fails or keeps dropping
- Test another device through the hotspot to separate a phone/carrier problem from a Switch problem.
- Confirm cellular data, not just the phone’s own Wi‑Fi connection, is working.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or network-filtering app.
- Try the other hotspot band or compatibility mode.
- Check the carrier plan and remaining hotspot allowance.
- Keep the phone near a strong cellular signal, disconnect other hotspot users, and stop competing downloads or streams.
- Plug in the phone while tethering, but do not cover its ventilation areas. Disable automatic hotspot shutdown if your phone offers that control.
Phone heat, battery-saving behavior, congestion, movement between cellular bands, and carrier throttling can all cause slow or intermittent service. Apple recommends restarting and updating devices before considering a network-settings reset. That reset removes saved Wi‑Fi passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings, so treat it as a last resort (Apple Support).

When online multiplayer still does not work
The Switch can pass its internet test while multiplayer sessions fail. Peer-to-peer games depend on NAT, and a strict NAT type can prevent or limit connections. A mobile carrier controls much of the hotspot’s upstream routing, so you may not be able to change it; the other player’s NAT type can matter too (Nintendo NAT troubleshooting).

For regular or competitive multiplayer, a stable home broadband connection is generally more suitable. A hotspot remains useful for travel, emergency access, occasional play, eShop browsing, and cloud functions when signal and data allowances are adequate.
Does a phone hotspot use data?
Yes. Downloads, updates, cloud transfers, eShop activity, voice or video features, and online play all travel through the phone’s cellular data. Usage varies by game and activity, so there is no reliable universal figure. Check the phone’s data-usage screen and your carrier’s hotspot rules before starting a large download.
How suitable is a phone hotspot?
| Use case | Suitability |
|---|---|
| Occasional online play | Usually acceptable with a strong signal |
| eShop browsing | Usually acceptable |
| Large game downloads | Poor when data is limited |
| Competitive multiplayer | Variable because of latency and NAT |
| Travel or emergency access | Good |
| Long-term primary connection | Usually not ideal |
Alternatives include ordinary Wi‑Fi, a dedicated portable hotspot, public Wi‑Fi, or a wired dock connection. Each has trade-offs: public networks may use captive portals or restrictive NAT, dedicated hotspots require separate hardware and service, and wired connections require compatible equipment plus wired internet.
