The Legion Go 2 Z2 Extreme is the faster, longer-lived choice, while the Ryzen Z2 can be the better value when its price is substantially lower. The Extreme’s advantage is largest in GPU-limited AAA games, at sustained high power and in 1% lows. Lenovo sells materially different memory and storage configurations, so compare the complete part number—not just the processor name—before buying.

What actually changes between the chips?
CPU architecture and clocks
Both documented processors have eight cores and 16 threads. Lenovo’s PSREF lists the Z2 at a 3.3GHz base frequency with up to 5.1GHz boost, while the Z2 Extreme is a Zen 5 design with a 2.0GHz base and up to 5.0GHz boost. Clock speed alone does not predict game performance: architecture, graphics resources, memory bandwidth and the power limit all matter.

Graphics resources are the main gaming difference
Lenovo identifies the Extreme with Radeon 890M-class RDNA 3.5 graphics. Secondary technical coverage describes a 16-compute-unit RDNA 3.5 implementation; treat that CU figure as attributed reporting rather than a complete Lenovo comparison specification. The larger graphics resource and faster memory give the Extreme more headroom when a game is GPU-limited, especially at 25–35W and at 1200p.
At 800p or 900p, a title can become CPU- or engine-limited, narrowing the gap. Neither model should be treated as a guaranteed native-1200p, high-settings machine for every new AAA release.
Memory capacity and speed
The US Z2 configuration has 16GB of LPDDR5X-7500; the cited Extreme configuration has 32GB of LPDDR5X-8000. Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded later. Shared system memory also serves the integrated GPU, so capacity affects texture headroom, background applications, emulation and modded games. Doubling capacity does not double FPS, but it can prevent paging, texture compromises and severe stutter.

Published FPS results—and why they are not interchangeable
Test conditions differ. Resolution, preset, TDP, power state, upscaling, frame generation, drivers and thermal duration can move results substantially. The figures below are reported results, not a single controlled benchmark suite.
| Game or test | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | About 40–41 FPS | ETA PRIME comparison; use the video’s stated settings and resolution |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | About 53–64 FPS | ETA PRIME comparison and its test setup |
| Forza Horizon 5 | About 71–80 FPS | ETA PRIME comparison and its test setup |
| Black Myth: Wukong | About 47–50 FPS | ETA PRIME comparison and its test setup |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | About 48–51 FPS | ETA PRIME comparison and its test setup |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 66 FPS unplugged; 75 FPS plugged in | Tom’s Hardware, 800p, medium settings, Z2 Extreme configuration |

How to interpret Legion Go 2 performance
TDP and power state
Results at 15–17W are not comparable with 25–35W performance-mode results. Plugged-in operation can sustain more power, as the Shadow of the Tomb Raider result demonstrates. Battery limits, fan profiles and firmware can change both average FPS and frame-time consistency.

Resolution and reconstruction
800p is substantially easier to drive than 1200p. For demanding games, 800p or 900p with AMD FSR, Radeon Super Resolution or a game’s own reconstruction is usually the sensible starting point. Report native and upscaled output separately.
Frame generation and VRAM allocation
Frame generation can raise the displayed counter while the native rendered rate remains lower. Record native FPS, upscaled FPS and generated/displayed FPS as separate values. UMA or VRAM allocation also matters: too little can cause texture and stutter problems, while too much leaves less memory for the CPU and Windows.
Average FPS is not smoothness
Average FPS can hide hitching. A meaningful comparison records 1% lows, 0.1% lows when available and a frame-time graph after the device has reached sustained temperature. The Extreme’s extra graphics and memory headroom is most valuable when it improves those lows rather than merely raising a peak number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable way to benchmark both models
- Update Windows, Lenovo Vantage or Legion Space, BIOS and AMD graphics drivers on both devices.
- Match resolution, preset, ray tracing, sharpening, upscaling and frame-generation settings exactly.
- Use the same UMA/VRAM allocation wherever firmware permits.
- Test a battery-oriented 15–17W profile and a plugged-in 25–35W performance profile.
- Run each scenario long enough to expose heat-soaked, sustained behavior rather than measuring only the first minute.
- Repeat every test at least three times and report the median average FPS, 1% low, 0.1% low, frame-time graph, TDP, temperature, fan mode, driver version and power state.
This framework follows practical guidance discussed by Position Is Everything; it is a testing method, not an original laboratory result.

Battery life and thermals
Both versions have a 74Wh battery, but runtime is not identical by definition. TDP, brightness, refresh rate, frame caps, Wi-Fi activity, game engine and background processes determine consumption. The Extreme can finish work faster, yet its higher performance mode can also draw more power. Compare battery tests only when those conditions are stated.
Which Legion Go 2 should you buy?
Choose the Z2 for value
- The price gap is large after matching storage and accessories.
- You mainly play indie games, older AAA titles, esports, emulated systems or streamed games.
- You are comfortable targeting 30–45 FPS at 800p or 900p with upscaling.
- The exact SKU provides enough memory and storage for your library.
Choose the Z2 Extreme for performance and longevity
- Modern AAA games, higher settings or stronger 1% lows are priorities.
- You expect to run 25–35W while plugged in.
- You want 32GB for large open-world games, mods, emulation or multitasking.
- You plan to keep the handheld for several years and the premium is roughly 15–20% or less than a comparable Z2 configuration.
Normalize the price before deciding
A 16GB/1TB Z2 versus a 32GB/1TB Extreme is not a pure processor comparison. Include the cost of additional SSD capacity, a microSD card, dock, replacement charger and any game subscription. If the Extreme costs several hundred dollars more, the Z2 can provide better value for a buyer willing to reduce resolution and settings.
Buying checklist
- Confirm whether the listing says Ryzen Z2 or Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
- Verify RAM capacity and speed; memory is soldered.
- Check SSD capacity and the listed form factor (2242 or 2280 can vary by model).
- Confirm operating system, included charger, controller accessories and warranty region.
- Compare the exact Lenovo or retailer part number, not a generic “Legion Go 2” title.
- Check return terms and whether a dock or charging connector is sold separately.
Do not confuse Ryzen Z2 with Ryzen Z2 Go. Z2 Go is a different, lower-tier processor documented for the Legion Go S: Lenovo Legion Go S PSREF.
Verdict
Buy the Z2 Extreme when its price is close to a like-for-like Z2 and you care about demanding games, sustained performance, 1% lows or 32GB memory. Buy the Z2 when it is heavily discounted and your library is lighter, streamed or comfortable at 800p/900p. The right winner is the complete SKU with the better combination of processor, RAM, SSD capacity and price—not the chip name in isolation.
