A “slow” PS5 can mean sluggish menus, lengthy downloads, long game loading, online lag, stuttering, overheating, or a failing storage device. Those symptoms have different causes and different fixes. Start by identifying which type of slowdown you have, then work from the non-destructive checks toward repair or reset only if necessary.
Identify what “slow” means
| Symptom | Most likely area | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Home screen, Settings, or Control Center feels sluggish | System software, content database, storage, or thermal problem | Restart, update, check free space, then use Safe Mode cache tools |
| Downloads or updates take a long time | Internet connection, Wi-Fi, router, ISP, PSN, or concurrent traffic | Run the network test, pause other downloads, try Ethernet, check PSN status |
| Games launch or load slowly | Game installation, patch, storage location, or drive problem | Restart, update, repair the database, and reinstall the affected game |
| Online characters teleport or controls feel delayed | Latency, packet loss, jitter, Wi-Fi, router, or game servers | Compare wired and wireless play and test another online game |
| Low frame rate or visual stutter | Game performance mode, game bug, heat, or hardware | Test another title, check the game’s graphics mode, and check for heat warnings |
| The console slows only when hot or after long sessions | Ventilation or thermal instability | Improve airflow, stop using an enclosed cabinet, and seek repair if it persists |
| One game or app will not load correctly | Corrupt installation, update, license, or game-specific bug | Update it, restart, and reinstall that title before changing system settings |
Download speed, storage speed, frame rate, loading time, and online latency are separate measurements. An SSD cannot fix high ping, and changing DNS cannot raise a game’s frame rate.
First, determine whether the console or the network is responsible
Before deleting anything, test the PS5 itself. Navigate the Home screen, open Settings and the Control Center, launch a second application, and try an already-installed offline game. If menus and offline play are responsive but downloads or online matches are poor, the network is the leading suspect. If every menu, application, and game is slow, investigate system software, storage, heat, or hardware.
Compare an affected game with an unrelated title. Test a digital game and a disc-based game if you have both. Note whether the issue began after waking from Rest Mode, installing an update, starting a download, or using the console for a long time. Record any error code before deleting data or resetting the console.

Safe fixes to try first
Restart normally
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Power > Restart PS5.
If the interface is frozen, hold the physical power button until the console shuts down, then start it again. Do not routinely cut power at the wall: an interrupted write or update can damage data.
Install system and game updates
Use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Sony’s current update guidance is at PlayStation system software support. Also check the affected game’s options menu or the Downloads/Uploads area.
For a stuck update, press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, choose View Error Info, and select Try Again. If normal updating repeatedly fails, Sony documents an advanced USB method: use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive, create PS5/UPDATE, and save the file as PS5UPDATE.PUP. The update file needs approximately 1.1 GB of free space. Use only Sony’s official instructions; do not install files from unofficial sources.
Check storage space
Open Settings > Storage. Remove games you no longer play, old captures, unused media applications, and unwanted installation files, or move suitable PS4 games to USB storage. Sony lists CE-107872-5 for insufficient console storage and CE-100028-1 for insufficient SSD space on its PS5 error-code page.
Low free space can cause failed downloads, updates, and storage errors. Sony does not publish a universal percentage of free space that every PS5 must maintain, so do not treat an invented “keep 20% free” rule as official. Freeing space may resolve storage problems, but it is not guaranteed to increase frame rates or transform normal loading times.
Pause competing downloads
Open Downloads/Uploads and pause other games or updates while testing one title. Streaming, cloud backups, and large downloads on other devices can also consume the connection. Check PlayStation Network status before changing console settings.
Improve airflow
Keep the console in an open position with clear intake and exhaust paths. Do not operate it inside a tightly enclosed cabinet or against fabric and walls. A warm case or audible fan does not by itself prove thermal throttling, but overheating warnings, crashes, graphical corruption, sudden shutdowns, or performance degradation make heat a serious possibility. Let the console cool and improve ventilation before further testing.
Fix a sluggish interface with Safe Mode
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- When it is off, press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Follow Sony’s current instructions at PlayStation Safe Mode support. Use a wired USB connection; a controller connected only by Bluetooth will not work at this stage.

- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Choose the least disruptive option that matches the symptom
- Repair Console Storage: Intended for startup or storage issues. Sony says it does not erase data.
- Clear System Software Cache: Sony specifically recommends this for system-feature issues or performance drops. It is a troubleshooting action, not scheduled maintenance, and it is not an FPS booster.
- Rebuild Database: Scans the drive and creates a new content database. It can help with system-feature problems, stale icons after deletion, or abnormal content indexing. It is not mechanical defragmentation and does not guarantee faster internet, loading, or frame rates.
- Update System Software: Useful when the console has been offline for a long time or a normal update failed.
- Restore Default Settings: Restores settings without deleting games, applications, screenshots, video clips, or saved data, according to Sony. It still changes network, display, accessibility, and other preferences, so record important settings first.
- Reset PS5: Deletes user data and returns the console to its original state. Back up first.
- Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): Deletes all user data and removes the installed system software. Reserve it for serious corruption or Sony-directed recovery.
“Clear cache” and “rebuild database” are not universal speed rituals. Use them when the related system or indexing symptoms exist, and stop escalating if the problem points to the network, a single game, heat, or hardware.
Fix slow downloads and online lag separately
Run the PS5 connection test
Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Sony’s connectivity guidance is available at PlayStation connectivity support. The result is a snapshot: it cannot prove that a particular game server is healthy or expose every packet-loss and jitter problem.
Use a wired-versus-wireless comparison
- Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet temporarily. If downloads or online play improve, investigate Wi-Fi coverage or interference rather than the console’s SSD.
- Move the console closer to the router or improve coverage if Ethernet is not practical.
- Restart the router and modem when other devices are also slow.
- Test at another time if PSN or a game’s servers may be congested.
- Check whether another online game has the same symptoms.
High ping creates delayed actions; packet loss causes rubber-banding, missing updates, and disconnects; low bandwidth produces slow downloads and streaming; low frame rate causes visual stutter even with a healthy network. A PS5 storage upgrade is not a first-line fix for any of those network symptoms.
Changing DNS can alter name-resolution behavior in some circumstances, but it is not a general cure for slow downloads or high in-game latency. Do not factory-reset the console or buy an SSD before excluding Wi-Fi, router, ISP, PSN, and game-server conditions.

- Install the game’s latest update.
- Restart the PS5 and test another game.
- Confirm the title is installed on the internal console SSD or a supported M.2 SSD. PS5 games stored on USB extended storage generally need to be copied back to console or M.2 storage to play.
- Back up saves if appropriate, then delete the game application only. Do not delete saved data unless troubleshooting specifically requires it.
- Reinstall from the Game Library or disc and apply the latest patch.
- Test the game before restoring every optional add-on or content pack.
Sony includes deleting and reinstalling an affected game in its update troubleshooting sequence at PlayStation system software and application support. If only one title remains problematic after reinstalling, check that game’s own support and server-status information before changing the whole console.
When heat or ventilation is the real problem
Stop repeated stress testing if the PS5 displays an overheating warning, shuts down, crashes under load, or shows graphical artifacts. Give it time to cool, move it into open air, and clear obstructions around the vents. Do not open the power supply or attempt unsafe internal repairs. Ordinary dust or a loud fan alone is not proof of a failing console. If thermal symptoms continue after airflow is corrected, use PlayStation Repairs and hardware support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you add an M.2 SSD?
An internal M.2 SSD is primarily a capacity and storage-workflow upgrade. It makes sense when you repeatedly run out of playable PS5-game space, transfers and reinstalls are burdensome, or Sony support confirms a problem with the original storage. It is not a universal FPS, ping, or download-speed upgrade.
Current Sony requirements
Sony’s current M.2 guidance lists PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drives from 250 GB to 8 TB, supported form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110, width up to 25 mm, and lengths from 30 to 110 mm depending on the form factor. Total thickness must be no more than 11.25 mm, with separate above- and below-board limits. Sony recommends sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s and requires effective heat dissipation, such as a compatible heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Verify requirements for your model and current software at Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guide.

Sony warns that not every game will perform exactly like it does on the internal SSD, even when an M.2 drive exceeds 5,500 MB/s. If a game has problems from M.2 storage, move it to the internal console storage.
Internal M.2 versus external USB storage
A supported internal M.2 drive lets you download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. External USB storage is mainly an archive and capacity solution: it can store PS5 games and run compatible PS4 games, but PS5 games generally must be copied back to internal or M.2 storage to play. See Sony’s distinctions at PlayStation storage solutions.
For example, the officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P is sold through PlayStation Direct. Prices shown there on August 18, 2026 were $249.99 for 1 TB, $379.99 for 2 TB, $599.99 for 4 TB, and $1,099.99 for 8 TB; prices can change. Its licensing and heatsink simplify compatibility, but a premium product is a poor fit for online lag or low frame rate. PlayStation Direct also listed 5 TB Seagate external storage at $219.99, a 5 TB ASTRO BOT edition at $179.99, and a 2 TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Game Drive at $239.99 on that date. Treat these as volatile listings, not permanent prices.
Back up before resetting
Do not reset until your saves and other irreplaceable data are protected. Sony’s USB backup guidance supports backing up PS5 data to a USB storage device. Restoring a backup requires the console’s system software to be the same version or newer than the version used to create it.
PlayStation Plus provides 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saved data under the service’s account conditions, as explained at PlayStation Plus support. Cloud saves are not a complete console backup: screenshots, clips, settings, and other data may require USB backup or manual transfer. Confirm synchronization before selecting Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
When to contact PlayStation Support
Stop cycling through software tweaks and contact Sony support or PlayStation Repairs when:
- The Home screen, Settings, multiple games, and applications remain slow after updates and non-destructive Safe Mode steps.
- Storage errors, corrupted data, repeated crashes, or unexpected shutdowns continue.
- The console repeatedly overheats or displays artifacts after airflow is improved.
- System-software installation fails, Safe Mode will not start, or the console cannot complete recovery.
- Reinstalling the affected game does not resolve an issue that is limited to that title and the publisher’s support cannot explain it.
For network-only symptoms, investigate the router, ISP, PSN, or game server instead of sending a healthy console for repair.
