Update: Epic Games Store’s January 1, 2026 mystery-game finale delivered Wildgate and Total War: THREE KINGDOMS. Both were free to claim from January 1 through January 8 at approximately 16:00 UTC (11:00 a.m. ET); that offer has expired.
The clues, reported by Notebookcheck, produced one accurate prediction and one understandable miss.
What Epic teased
The January 1 drop was unusual because it contained two games rather than the single title used for most of the holiday mystery promotion. They were the first Epic freebies released in calendar year 2026, but also the final batch of the holiday event that began in December 2025.
The reported reveal time was January 1, 2026, at 16:00 UTC (11:00 a.m. Eastern Time). Both titles remained claimable for a week, until January 8 at about 16:00 UTC. The original clue wording came through a reported official staff or community/Discord source, rather than a permanently archived Epic newsroom post, so it is best treated as reported teaser material.

The two cryptic clues
“Victory requires everyone to leave; but is claimed only by those who decide when, how, or even if that departure happens.”
“Three rise from a fallen kingdom; victory belongs not to the last army standing, but to the one who turns fractures into a single mandate.”

The first line sounded like an extraction or escape condition. The second pointed toward three competing powers and a campaign about turning a divided realm into one political authority.
Why the first clue led to Hunt: Showdown and Phasmophobia
“Everyone to leave” suggested that success depended on extracting rather than simply eliminating opponents. The wording about choosing “when” and “how” to depart reinforced the idea of player-controlled extraction, which prompted speculation about Hunt: Showdown, Phasmophobia and other cooperative or extraction-oriented games.

Those were community predictions, not leaks. The eventual giveaway was Wildgate. In retrospect, the clue can be read as a broad reference to its multiplayer combat and objectives involving space travel, combat encounters and treasure-hunt-style play, but there is no verified statement that this was the developers’ intended explanation. The prediction failed because a genre-level hint could fit several games.
Why Total War: THREE KINGDOMS was the strongest second prediction
The second clue was much more specific:
- “Three” evoked the Three Kingdoms setting.
- A “fallen kingdom” suggested a historical realm broken into rival territories.
- One mandate described unifying those factions under a single ruler rather than merely winning a final battle.
That combination made Total War: THREE KINGDOMS the leading guess. Crusader Kings III and Dragon Age: Inquisition were also mentioned as alternatives, but the Total War title matched the wording most directly—and it was the game Epic ultimately selected.

Both were free to claim through the Epic Games Store during that stated window. Adding a title required an Epic account; the resulting entitlement was tied to Epic’s PC storefront, not Steam, and did not provide a Steam key. Regional eligibility, age ratings and other storefront restrictions could still apply. Epic describes its recurring offers on the free-games page.

The two-game January 1 release closed the holiday mystery event. The next listed weekly giveaway was Bloons TD 6. Calling the pair the “first mystery free games of 2026” therefore refers to the calendar year, not the launch of a wholly new annual promotion.

Offer status now
The January 1–8, 2026 promotion is over. As of August 18, 2026, neither Wildgate nor Total War: THREE KINGDOMS should be presented as newly claimable for free under that specific giveaway. The clues and outcome are documented in the original teaser report and the follow-up identifying the games.
