Windows 10 can run DLSS Frame Generation on a compatible 64-bit system, but there is no universal Windows switch. The option appears inside games that implement it. NVIDIA’s documented setup requires a GeForce RTX 40-series GPU, Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1) or newer/build 19041 or newer, Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS), a suitable driver, and a supported game.
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s general support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the better long-term choice, but that lifecycle change does not by itself disable DLSS on an eligible Windows 10 installation.
Check whether your PC is eligible
| Requirement | What to verify |
|---|---|
| GPU | GeForce RTX 40-series for native DLSS Frame Generation. RTX 20- and 30-series cards can use DLSS Super Resolution but not the original native Frame Generation implementation. RTX 50-series cards support newer Multi Frame Generation features in compatible games. |
| Windows | 64-bit Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1) or newer, build 19041 or newer. |
| Scheduling | Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling enabled. |
| Game | A title with native DLSS Frame Generation support, commonly through DirectX 12. |
| Software | A current or game-recommended NVIDIA driver and an up-to-date game installation. |
NVIDIA lists the RTX 40-series, Windows 10 20H1 or newer, and HAGS as requirements in its DLSS/Streamline documentation. Game support remains title-specific.
Check your Windows version and architecture
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Confirm that the version is 2004 or newer and the build is 19041 or newer.
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Under System type, confirm that the operating system is 64-bit.
If the version or build is older, install all available Windows 10 updates before troubleshooting the game.

Understand what “DLSS 3” means
DLSS is a group of technologies rather than one switch:
- DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image.
- DLSS Frame Generation creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames.
- NVIDIA Reflex coordinates CPU and GPU work to reduce system latency and is commonly paired with Frame Generation.
NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 announcement describes Frame Generation as an additional-frame technology integrated into supported games and paired with Reflex: NVIDIA DLSS 3 announcement. A game can offer Super Resolution without offering Frame Generation, so enabling DLSS upscaling does not automatically enable generated frames.
Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Display.
- Scroll down and open Graphics settings. On some builds this is labeled Change default graphics settings.
- Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
- Restart the PC.
NVIDIA documents this setting in its Streamline programming guide. HAGS is a prerequisite, not a feature that adds Frame Generation to unsupported hardware or games.

If the HAGS control is missing
- Recheck that Windows is 64-bit and at least build 19041.
- Install pending Windows updates and the latest compatible NVIDIA display driver, then restart.
- On a desktop, make sure the display is connected to the NVIDIA GPU rather than motherboard video output.
- On a laptop, assign the game to the high-performance NVIDIA GPU in Windows Graphics settings.
- Do not begin with registry hacks; they are not the normal documented setup.
Update the NVIDIA driver and the game
- Open or install the NVIDIA App.
- Open Drivers and install the latest compatible Game Ready Driver, unless the game developer specifies another version.
- Restart if prompted.
- Update the game through Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, or its own launcher.
There is no single driver number that applies to every retail game. SDK documentation can specify a minimum for a particular integration—for example, the DLSS 3.7 Unreal Engine guide mentions driver 531.68 or newer—but a game’s current recommendation takes precedence: DLSS 3.7 integration guide.
Turn on Frame Generation in the game
- Launch the fully updated game.
- Open Settings, Options, or Graphics.
- Select DirectX 12 if the game offers multiple rendering APIs. Exact requirements vary by title, but documented DLSS Frame Generation integrations commonly use DX12.
- Enable NVIDIA DLSS or DLSS Super Resolution.
- Choose a quality mode such as Quality, Balanced, or Performance.
- Set Frame Generation, DLSS Frame Generation, or NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation to On.
- Enable NVIDIA Reflex or Reflex + Boost when offered.
- Apply the changes and restart the game if requested.
Menu names and dependencies differ because the developer integrates DLSS. NVIDIA notes that DLSS options vary by game: NVIDIA gaming and DLSS guidance.
Verify that generated frames are active
- Compare the game’s displayed FPS with Frame Generation off and on.
- Use the game’s performance overlay or a frame-time monitor such as NVIDIA FrameView.
- Watch camera movement for smoother presentation, but remember that generated frames do not represent an equal increase in simulation or traditionally rendered frames.
- Check input response and image quality, not just the headline FPS number.
Frame Generation cannot cure severe CPU limitation, shader-compilation stutter, or an unresponsive game. It is generally most useful when the underlying (non-generated) frame rate is already reasonable.

Why the option is missing
You have an RTX 20- or 30-series card
Native DLSS 3 Frame Generation is not supported on those generations under NVIDIA’s documented requirements. DLSS Super Resolution may still be available.
You have an RTX 40-series card but no setting
- Confirm that the specific game includes native DLSS Frame Generation.
- Update the game and NVIDIA driver.
- Verify Windows 10 is build 19041 or newer and HAGS is enabled.
- Ensure the game is using the RTX GPU, not integrated graphics.
- Use the supported renderer, commonly DirectX 12.
- Enable DLSS Super Resolution first if the game hides Frame Generation until DLSS is active.
- Check the game’s patch notes or support pages for title-specific restrictions.
The game supports DLSS but only shows Super Resolution
DLSS features are modular. A title may implement Super Resolution without Frame Generation, or require a later patch or a particular renderer.

Manage latency, V-Sync, and image quality
- Enable Reflex when available; it is designed to reduce latency, but Frame Generation itself should not be described as a latency reduction feature.
- Generated frames can show artifacts around fast objects, particles, foliage, thin geometry, and interface elements.
- Use the game’s recommended V-Sync behavior. NVIDIA’s Streamline setup uses Vertical sync: Use the 3D application setting in NVIDIA Control Panel.
- If your monitor supports variable refresh, test it with the game’s recommended frame cap. The best cap depends on refresh rate, game behavior, and latency targets.
- Do not combine native DLSS Frame Generation with another frame-generation technology such as NVIDIA Smooth Motion; NVIDIA documents them as separate modes.
Windows 10’s status in 2026
Microsoft ended general Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025: Microsoft’s end-of-support notice. Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general release for Home and Pro: Windows 10 lifecycle details. Compatible PCs can still run supported games and DLSS, but Windows 11 is the supported long-term operating-system path. Upgrade eligibility depends on the hardware and Microsoft’s requirements.

DLSS Super Resolution
Available on supported RTX 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-series hardware when a game implements it. It reconstructs the image but does not create extra frames.
NVIDIA App DLSS overrides
The NVIDIA App can provide selected model upgrades, including a DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade for RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs when Frame Generation is already enabled in the game. It does not add native Frame Generation to a game with no supported implementation: NVIDIA App override instructions.

DLSS Multi Frame Generation
This newer feature targets RTX 50-series GPUs in compatible games and should not be confused with the original DLSS 3 Frame Generation setting: NVIDIA DLSS games and applications.
NVIDIA Smooth Motion
Smooth Motion is a separate driver-level technology. It is not proof that a game supports native DLSS Frame Generation, and NVIDIA warns against using both simultaneously.
The Bottom Line
To enable native DLSS Frame Generation on Windows 10, use a GeForce RTX 40-series GPU, Windows 10 build 19041 or newer (64-bit), HAGS, a current game-ready driver, and a game with native support. Turn the setting on in the game’s graphics menu; Windows itself cannot create the option.
