Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There is no single pairing method for every Afterglow wireless controller. Some are designed for Nintendo Switch and are not officially supported on Windows; others use a dedicated USB receiver. First identify the exact model and check that its packaging or manual lists PC support. If your controller is Switch-only, Windows detecting it over Bluetooth does not guarantee that games will work correctly.
Identify your Afterglow controller first
“Afterglow wireless” is not one model or connection type. Check the model number on the back or underside, the platform name on the packaging, and whether the box included a wireless USB receiver. Also check whether the controller has a PC/Xbox mode switch and whether its USB port supports data or is only for charging.
| Identification clue | Likely category | What it means for a PC |
|---|---|---|
| “Wireless Deluxe Controller for Nintendo Switch,” model 500-137-1 | Switch wireless controller | Available documentation describes Switch pairing and identifies this model as not PC-compatible. Do not assume that Windows Bluetooth detection means supported gameplay. Model documentation |
| “Afterglow Wave Wireless Controller” with Nintendo Switch branding | Switch-focused wireless controller | The official product positioning is for Nintendo Switch. Confirm PC support for your exact unit before trying to use it as a Windows gamepad. PDP product page |
| “Xbox Series X|S & PC Afterglow Wave Wired Controller” | Xbox/Windows wired controller | PDP lists Windows 10/11 compatibility; connect by USB rather than Bluetooth. PDP product page |
| A dedicated USB wireless receiver came in the box | Receiver-based wireless model | Use the original receiver and follow that model’s instructions. Set a PC/Xbox switch to PC if the receiver has one. |
| No receiver; only a USB charging cable | Possibly Bluetooth or wired, depending on model | Check the exact manual for supported platforms and connection methods. A cable or USB-C port alone does not establish PC gameplay support. |
- Look for explicit wording such as “PC,” “Windows 10/11,” or “Xbox & PC.”
- Check the manual for the controller-side pairing button and supported connection type.
- Do not treat “wireless” as synonymous with Bluetooth: some models rely on a dedicated receiver.
- A USB charging cable may not carry data. If a wired connection is not detected, try a known data-capable cable.
Check what “PC compatible” means
Compatibility has several stages. A manufacturer listing Windows support is stronger evidence than the device merely appearing in Windows. Even after Windows detects a controller, a game may not accept its inputs or support every feature.
- Official compatibility: The manufacturer lists Windows or PC for the exact model.
- Detection: Windows shows a USB or Bluetooth device.
- Usable game input: Buttons, sticks, triggers, and the D-pad work as expected in a game.
- Feature support: Rumble, motion controls, headset audio, remapping, lighting, firmware updates, and back buttons each work separately.
The 500-137-1 documentation describes Nintendo Switch setup, including the Switch menu path Controllers > Change Grip/Order and use of the Sync button. That is not a Windows pairing procedure. By contrast, PDP lists Windows 10/11 support for its Xbox Series X|S and PC Afterglow Wave wired controller. 500-137-1 pairing instructions · PDP Windows-compatible model

Get ready to connect
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
- A charged controller.
- Bluetooth built into the PC, or a compatible Bluetooth adapter, if the exact model supports Bluetooth PC use. Many desktop PCs do not have Bluetooth built in.
- The original receiver if the controller requires one.
- A data-capable USB cable if connecting by cable.
- The model-specific manual, especially for the controller’s pairing button sequence.
joy.cplfor a basic Windows input check, and the game’s own controller settings for the final check.
Connect a PC-compatible controller by USB
Use this method for a model whose product information explicitly lists Windows support, such as PDP’s Xbox Series X|S and PC Afterglow Wave wired controller. A Switch-focused controller does not become officially PC-compatible just because it has a USB port.
- Connect the controller to the PC with its included cable or another known data-capable USB cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device and install its standard controller driver.
- Press Windows + R, type
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the controller and choose Properties. Move both sticks, press every button, test the D-pad and triggers, and check for stuck or missing inputs.
- Open the game and select or enable the controller in its input settings. If the game does not respond, check its controller support and, if you use Steam, try Steam Input.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance also covers connecting controllers by USB and Bluetooth: Connect a controller to a PC for gaming on Windows 11.
Pair by Bluetooth only if your exact model supports it
These are the Windows-side steps, not a guarantee that a Switch-only Afterglow controller supports Windows. Use the model’s manual to enter pairing mode; the button and timing can vary. Do not reuse the Switch 500-137-1’s Switch pairing instructions as if they were Windows instructions.
- Disconnect the controller from any console, phone, tablet, or previously paired computer. Charge it sufficiently.
- On the PC, press Windows + I, then open Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on, select Add device, and choose Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode using the model-specific Sync, Pair, or Bluetooth control.
- When the controller appears in the device list, select it and wait for Windows to report that it is connected.
- Check input in
joy.cpl, then test the controller in the game. A connected status alone does not establish that the game supports it.
Microsoft’s Windows path is Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth. Microsoft’s connection guide explains the PC steps; the controller-side sequence must come from the correct Afterglow manual.

Connect through a wireless USB receiver
Use this only for a model supplied with a dedicated receiver. A receiver mentioned in one Afterglow Wave manual is not evidence that all Afterglow wireless controllers use the same system. The manual for the relevant Wave model says to follow Xbox pairing steps and set the dongle switch to PC. Afterglow Wave wireless manual material
- Insert the original receiver directly into a PC USB port, rather than a passive hub. If it has a platform switch, select PC.
- Allow Windows to detect the receiver or install any driver required by the model.
- Turn on the controller and put it into pairing mode as specified by its manual. If the receiver has a pairing button, use it as instructed there.
- Wait for the controller’s indicator to show the connected state described in the manual.
- Test inputs with
joy.cpl, then check the game’s controller settings.
If connection quality is poor, move the receiver to a front USB port or use an extension, and keep it close to the controller during setup. Do not assume a replacement receiver will pair: compatibility and pairing may be specific to the original model.
Confirm that Windows and the game receive input
Check Windows input
- Press Windows + R, enter
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the controller and open Properties.
- Move both sticks through their range, press every button, test each trigger independently, and check all D-pad directions.
- Watch for stuck buttons, dead zones or missing movement, and disconnects while the controller is idle or moved.
Check Steam and the game
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Controller and check whether Steam detects the device.
- If the game needs it, enable the relevant Steam Input support and inspect the game’s controller layout for sensible bindings.
- Test the controller in the game’s own input menu and confirm that button prompts match what you press.
- If Steam Input makes diagnosis harder, temporarily test a game outside Steam or use the game’s native controller settings.
Steam Input can translate or remap some controller inputs, but it is a compatibility tool, not proof of official PC support. It may also cause duplicate input, unexpected mappings, or prompts that do not match the controller.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand why a detected controller may not work in a game
Many modern Windows games expect XInput, the interface commonly used by Xbox-style controllers. A controller connected through another protocol, such as DirectInput, may still appear in Windows and pass a basic input test while a particular game ignores it or assigns different button numbers. Steam Input or a game’s own configuration may help, but results depend on the controller, connection mode, firmware, and game. There is no universal setting that converts every Afterglow controller to XInput.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Confirm that the exact model supports Bluetooth use with a PC. If documentation identifies it as Switch-only, do not assume a Windows Bluetooth problem is the cause.
- Charge the controller, turn it off and back on, and enter pairing mode using the model’s manual.
- In Settings > Bluetooth & devices, remove a stale saved entry for the controller, then try adding it again.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, move away from other active Bluetooth devices, and restart the PC.
- If it still fails, update or reinstall the PC’s Bluetooth adapter driver. Trying another PC or phone can help determine whether the controller is discoverable, but it does not establish Windows game compatibility.
Windows sees it, but games do not
- Check whether it registers in
joy.cpl. - Connect the controller before launching the game, then inspect the game’s input settings.
- Try Steam Input if you use Steam, and close third-party remapping tools temporarily to rule out captured or duplicated input.
- Disconnect other controllers so the game does not select the wrong device.
- Check whether the game supports generic DirectInput controllers; try wired mode if the model supports it.
Buttons are wrong or Xbox prompts are missing
Possible causes include a DirectInput layout, a game-specific profile, Nintendo-style button labels versus Xbox-style prompts, a Steam Input mapping, or duplicate virtual controllers created by remapping software. First confirm physical button readings in joy.cpl, then disable remappers temporarily, try the game’s default layout or Steam Input, and rebind controls if the game permits it.
The controller connects but disconnects
- Fully charge the controller and reduce the distance to its receiver or PC.
- Connect a receiver directly to the PC rather than through a hub; test a different USB port if needed.
- During diagnosis, move away from crowded wireless areas and USB 3 hubs.
- Where Windows offers a power-management setting for the Bluetooth adapter, check whether it is being powered down aggressively.
- Test wired operation if the model supports it, and disconnect the controller from a Switch or other device that may be trying to reconnect.
Buttons work, but rumble, motion, audio, or back buttons do not
These are separate feature-support questions, not proof that basic pairing failed. Check the exact model’s manual for rumble, motion controls, headset and microphone audio, programmable back buttons, lighting configuration, and firmware updates. Windows button input does not establish that these features work on PC.
The receiver is lost
Do not assume another Afterglow or generic receiver can replace it. Receiver pairing can be model-specific, and the documentation here does not establish interchangeability. Check the exact model’s support information for a compatible replacement before relying on a new receiver.
When pairing is not a practical option
If the exact model is documented as Switch-only, there is no verified Windows pairing procedure to promise. A Bluetooth adapter supplies Bluetooth hardware to a PC; it does not add official PC support to a controller. For dependable Windows play, choose a controller whose product page explicitly lists PC or Windows compatibility. A wired model can also avoid wireless pairing uncertainty, provided its manufacturer lists PC support.
