In June 2025, Citrix engineer Robert Caruso reported playing Atari’s 1979 Video Chess through the Stella Atari emulator against ChatGPT. After roughly 90 minutes, ChatGPT conceded following repeated board-state and illegal-move errors. This was an informal, human-mediated experiment—not a standardized contest proving that a physical 1977 console is generally smarter than modern AI.
What happened in the reported match?
According to Robert Caruso’s account, the sequence began with a discussion about chess AI. ChatGPT reportedly volunteered to play Atari’s Video Chess and expressed confidence that it could win quickly.
- Caruso launched Video Chess in the Stella Atari emulator.
- He supplied ChatGPT with the initial board information and relayed moves manually.
- ChatGPT repeatedly lost track of piece locations, proposed inconsistent or illegal moves, and needed corrections.
- Caruso switched from the Atari game’s visual piece symbols to standard chess notation, but said the errors continued.
- After repeated corrections and attempted restarts, the session lasted about 90 minutes and ChatGPT conceded.
Caruso described errors including confusing rooks and bishops, missing simple pawn forks, trying to move captured pieces, and making sacrifices that did not match the actual position. These are observations from one account, not independently audited game statistics. He also said ChatGPT sometimes offered useful strategic explanations when it had an accurate representation of the board.
That qualification matters: the experiment showed unreliable long-session play, not that the model knows nothing about chess.

Was it really an Atari 2600?
The opponent was Video Chess running in Stella, an Atari 2600/VCS emulator. The report does not describe a physical console connected to a television. “Atari 2600 beat ChatGPT” is therefore shorthand for an emulated Atari chess program defeating the chatbot in a manually administered game.
The Atari VCS launched in 1977 and was renamed the Atari 2600 in 1982. The relevant cartridge, generally known as Video Chess, was released in 1979; “Atari Chess” is informal shorthand rather than the official title. Historical background is documented at Wikipedia’s Video Chess reference.
How strong was Atari Video Chess?
By modern standards, the program was extremely limited. Caruso described it as looking roughly one or two moves ahead on Atari-era hardware reported as using a 1.19 MHz processor. Secondary coverage has repeated a 4 KB cartridge figure, but that number should not be treated as a complete independent specification of the program’s code or playing strength.

- 4-Switch Wood Grain Model
A shallow search does not make a chess program incapable of winning this particular encounter. The software was built to maintain a chess position, generate legal moves, and choose among them consistently. It did not need to interpret ambiguous language, remember a long natural-language conversation, or explain its decisions.

Chess knowledge is not the same as board-state tracking
A language model may know what a rook is, recognize the idea of a fork, and discuss opening principles. A game requires more: every move must update the location and status of every piece, account for captures, and preserve that state for the next turn.
Legal move generation was not built in
A conventional chess program stores the board as structured data, enumerates legal moves, and rejects actions that violate the rules. A conversational model primarily predicts likely text. It can produce plausible algebraic notation without guaranteeing that the move is legal in the current position.

Long sessions compound small errors
Once a model misplaces one piece in its internal account, later calculations can be coherent relative to the wrong position. Supplying notation instead of Atari graphics did not eliminate the reported errors, although the experiment did not control the amount and timing of information well enough to prove that visual input was irrelevant.
IBM’s analysis makes the same broad distinction between conversational systems and software designed for exact board-state maintenance: IBM, “Atari Wrecked ChatGPT in Chess”.

Not in the normal tournament sense. Caruso manually mediated the interaction and had to correct ChatGPT’s board awareness and prevent bad moves. The Atari program was operating as chess software, while the chatbot was communicating through a human relay.

The defensible description is that ChatGPT could not conduct a reliable legal game without intervention, while the specialized Atari program completed its narrower task more consistently. It is not accurate to present the session as a standardized, automatically refereed benchmark.
Which ChatGPT model was tested?
The publicly accessible primary account does not provide a complete model-and-settings record. Several secondary reports identify the system as GPT-4o, including CNET’s coverage, but that attribution should remain qualified unless the original transcript confirms it. The result should not be generalized to every current ChatGPT model or configuration.

| Supported conclusion | Unsupported conclusion |
|---|---|
| An emulated, dedicated chess program defeated ChatGPT in an anecdotal session. | A physical Atari 2600 is generally more intelligent than modern AI. |
| Unassisted conversational play can be unreliable over a long game. | Atari Video Chess is stronger than Stockfish or other modern engines. |
| Specialized symbolic state tracking can beat broad language fluency on a narrow task. | Every ChatGPT version would perform identically. |
| The report exposes repeated state-tracking and legality failures. | The event was a statistically meaningful or tournament-standard benchmark. |
There is no complete public protocol in the primary account covering model version, prompts, all moves, time controls, Atari difficulty, and independent replication. That makes the story credible as an anecdotal demonstration, but not a controlled measurement of relative intelligence.

Why this is not “1970s AI versus 2025 AI”
The comparison is between systems optimized for different jobs. Video Chess had one responsibility: maintain a chess position and select a legal move. ChatGPT is a general conversational model expected to interpret language, explain ideas, and generate responses across many subjects.
A weak specialist can outperform a powerful generalist when the task has strict rules, an explicit state, enumerable actions, and automatic validation. This is why the result says more about system design than about the age of the hardware. Stockfish and AlphaZero reinforce the same point: strong chess performance comes from purpose-built systems, not from the label “AI” alone.
Can ChatGPT play chess reliably?
Yes, but the reliable setup matters. ChatGPT can explain concepts, discuss openings, annotate a supplied game, create puzzles, and offer candidate moves. It becomes a different system when connected to a chessboard, legal-move validator, or engine.
A dependable architecture separates the jobs:
- Store the position in chess software.
- Generate and validate legal moves with chess code.
- Use Stockfish or another engine for serious calculation.
- Use the language model to explain the position, plans, and trade-offs in plain English.
For serious analysis, Stockfish is the appropriate specialist tool. For browser-based play, lessons, puzzles, and engine-assisted features, Chess.com provides a complete platform. Readers trying to reproduce the reported setup can use Stella, subject to obtaining game software legally in their jurisdiction. An Atari 2600+ is relevant for retro-gaming, but buying hardware is unnecessary for an emulator-based recreation.
What readers should take away
The useful lesson is not that an old console is secretly smarter than a modern chatbot. It is that general-purpose language generation does not automatically provide exact symbolic memory, legal-move checking, or persistent state. Match the tool to the structure of the task: use a chess engine for validated play and a language model for explanation and coaching.
