Yes, some Switch 2 owners are reporting Joy-Con 2 stick drift. But those reports do not establish that it is widespread or happening at the same scale as the original Switch problem. A teardown found that Joy-Con 2 uses conventional potentiometer-based sticks, a design with a known contact-wear mechanism; that makes the reports concerning, not proof of a mass failure.

What Joy-Con 2 drift looks like

Drift is a control stick registering movement while you are not touching it. A character, camera, cursor or vehicle may move on its own; aim may jitter; or the stick may appear centered but show an offset in the system’s calibration display.

Not every controller fault is drift. Nintendo lists incorrect stick response separately from issues such as wireless disconnection, power, button response and attachment recognition in its Joy-Con 2 troubleshooting guidance.

What the reports and hardware evidence show

Owner reports show that failures exist, not how common they are

Owners have described symptoms including a left Joy-Con 2 drifting after roughly two months and reports of problems affecting more than one controller. These are individual accounts, not a representative survey, so they cannot establish a failure rate. A separate owner complaint about a stick surface crumbling describes physical wear; by itself, that is not evidence of electronic drift. See the reports on r/switch2, r/NintendoSwitch2 and r/NintendoSwitchHelp.

Nintendo Joy-Con (L/R) - Neon Red/Neon Blue
  • Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
  • The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
  • Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
  • Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.

The teardown explains why the reports are plausible

In its June 6, 2025 teardown, iFixit reported conventional potentiometer-based sticks in the examined Joy-Con 2, with no visible Hall-effect or TMR sensors. A potentiometer reads position through physical electrical contact: a wiper moves across resistive material, which can wear or be affected by dust and contamination. That is a plausible route to inaccurate readings, but examining hardware does not show how many units will fail or how long they will last.

Nintendo’s support category for Joy-Con 2 sticks that “are not responding or respond incorrectly” confirms that the symptom is supported for troubleshooting. It is not a public admission of a systemic defect or evidence of its prevalence.

Did Nintendo eliminate the original Joy-Con drift risk?

Joy-Con 2 is a redesigned controller generation, but “redesigned” does not mean “drift-proof.” The teardown suggests that the underlying stick-sensing approach remains potentiometer-based. That means the broad contact-wear mechanism has not visibly been eliminated; it does not establish that Joy-Con 2 has identical materials, tolerances, firmware behavior or failure rates to original Switch Joy-Con.

There is no verified public failure rate or reliable long-term durability study established here, and the available evidence does not show that Switch 2 drift is occurring at the original Switch’s scale. The responsible conclusion is that early failures are credible and the design is plausibly susceptible, while the scale remains unknown.

How potentiometer, Hall-effect and TMR sticks differ

  • Potentiometer: Uses physical electrical contacts to read stick position. Contact wear or contamination can affect the signal. This is the technology iFixit reported in Joy-Con 2.
  • Hall-effect: Uses magnetic sensing rather than a rubbing electrical contact, avoiding that particular wear mechanism. It is not immune to mechanical damage, sensor faults or calibration problems. iFixit noted that Hall-effect sensing can create integration challenges in hardware with strong magnets.
  • TMR: Uses tunnel magnetoresistance sensing. Third-party TMR replacement sticks are available for Switch 2 Joy-Con. This is an alternative sensing approach, not a guarantee against every kind of failure.

How to check whether your Joy-Con 2 is drifting

  1. Install available Switch 2 system software updates.
  2. Update the controller from the system’s controller settings.
  3. Open the control-stick calibration screen and leave the stick untouched. Watch whether the on-screen indicator moves or remains off-center.
  4. Try the controller in more than one game or application. If the problem occurs only in one game, check that game’s dead-zone or input settings before concluding the stick is drifting.
  5. If the symptom appears only when the controller is wireless or attached, test the other mode as well; connection behavior can point to a different problem.
  6. Record a short video of the untouched calibration screen if the fault persists or comes and goes. This can help document the symptom when contacting support.

What to try before requesting service

Update, calibrate and retest

Start with current system and controller updates, then calibrate and test again. Calibration can correct an offset in some cases, but it cannot repair worn contacts; iFixit describes it as an initial troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. If calibration appears to solve the issue only temporarily, note when it returns rather than treating repeated recalibration as a lasting repair.

Inspect for obstruction without introducing new damage

With the controller disconnected or powered down as appropriate, inspect around the stick for visible debris. Follow safe, manufacturer-compatible cleaning guidance; do not spray unverified chemicals into the controller. Contamination can affect a potentiometer, but a short-lived improvement after cleaning does not prove that wear has been fixed.

Use Nintendo service if the fault continues

Nintendo’s U.S. and Canada service flow starts with troubleshooting and then lets users create a service request. The process may require a Nintendo Account, product information, shipping details and, where applicable, payment information. Contact Nintendo before opening a controller that may still be under warranty.

Warranty and service: geography matters

For the United States and Canada, Nintendo states that hardware, accessories and Nintendo-published games have a one-year warranty from the purchase date, and proof of purchase is required. Physical damage is excluded from that standard warranty, though Nintendo or an authorized service center may still offer paid service. Coverage is determined through the service process; see Nintendo’s repair and replacement information.

Do not assume that every Joy-Con 2 drift repair is free in every country or after the warranty period. Nintendo’s UK stick-support information is a separate regional policy. Policies and eligibility depend on location and circumstances. A support category for stick trouble is not, by itself, a universal free out-of-warranty repair program.

Repair or replace: which route makes sense?

Option Best suited to Trade-offs
Nintendo service Controllers potentially under warranty; owners who do not want to open electronics. Shipping and turnaround time; possible charges outside warranty. Contact Nintendo first if the controller is under warranty.
Standard replacement stick Experienced electronics hobbyists seeking a component-level repair. Opening the controller can involve hidden screws, adhesive and delicate disassembly. Depending on the part and method, soldering may be required. A conventional replacement stick retains the same broad contact-wear mechanism.
Third-party TMR stick Experienced DIY repairers who want a different sensing technology and accept installation risk. Third-party part, compatibility requirements and possible warranty complications. TMR is not failure-proof; confirm the correct left or right Joy-Con 2 revision.
Full controller replacement Controllers with several faults, such as a damaged shell, worn buttons or battery trouble alongside stick problems. A full replacement price is not established here, so compare current local options rather than assuming it costs less than repair.

At the time of viewing, iFixit listed a standard Switch 2 Joy-Con joystick for $24.99 and a GuliKit TMR replacement for $29.99 on its parts page. These listed part prices are not a complete repair quote: tools, shipping, tax and the risk of damaging the controller can add cost. Do not open a controller under warranty without first checking with Nintendo. iFixit rated the Switch 2’s overall repairability 3/10 in its teardown; that is iFixit’s assessment, not an official rating.

Use the symptom to choose the next step

  • The calibration indicator moves while untouched: This points to drift or a related stick-sensing fault. Update, calibrate and retest; if it persists, document it and seek service or repair.
  • Calibration fixes the issue and it stays fixed: Treat it as a corrected calibration issue unless symptoms return; calibration does not prove a physical repair occurred.
  • Calibration helps only temporarily: Recurrence may indicate contamination or mechanical/electrical wear. Keep a record and pursue service rather than recalibrating indefinitely.
  • The calibration display is stable, but one game behaves strangely: Check game-specific dead zones and settings. A game-specific symptom alone does not confirm drift.
  • The controller disconnects or is not recognized: Investigate connection or attachment recognition separately; those are distinct from stick drift in Nintendo’s troubleshooting categories.
  • The stick surface or cap is damaged: Report the physical damage accurately. In the United States and Canada, physical damage is excluded from the standard warranty.
  • You have an original Switch Joy-Con: Do not conflate its repair history with Joy-Con 2. Nintendo lists the two controller generations separately, and evidence about one is not direct evidence about the other.
