Yes—you can build and publish a small indie game on a Chromebook without paying for an engine or desktop computer. The most dependable route is to enable ChromeOS’s Linux development environment, run the standard Linux build of Godot, make a small 2D game in GDScript, export it for the Web, and upload the complete export to itch.io. This works best for compact 2D projects rather than demanding 3D games.
Godot is free and open source under the MIT license. You may commercially use and license your game, but distributed projects must include Godot’s copyright and license notice in documentation or credits: Godot license.
Check whether your Chromebook is suitable
Chromebooks vary widely. Confirm these conditions before installing anything:
- Linux support: Linux development environment must be available and not blocked by a school or employer.
- Processor: a supported 64-bit Intel/AMD or ARM Chromebook is the practical target.
- Memory: 4 GB can run a simple 2D editor project, while 8 GB is substantially more comfortable. Godot lists 4 GB as the native editor minimum and 8 GB as recommended.
- Storage: reserve at least 2–4 GB for Godot, export templates, your project and assets. Godot’s editor is about 200 MB, while selected export templates can require up to about 1.5 GB.
- Controls: a physical keyboard and mouse or usable trackpad make the editor far easier to operate.
Google’s Linux environment currently does not provide hardware acceleration for Linux applications, so performance can be poorer than the Chromebook’s specifications imply. Plan on 2D arcade, puzzle, platform, card, board or short narrative games. Large 3D worlds, lighting-heavy scenes, extensive asset libraries and server-dependent multiplayer are poor first targets.

Godot is not a normal native ChromeOS desktop application. It runs in ChromeOS’s Linux container, in a browser-based Web Editor, or through the Android editor. The Linux route gives you local files, the full desktop editor, command-line tools and offline work after setup. The Web Editor at editor.godotengine.org is a fallback when Linux is unavailable; browser storage and file-management limits make it less suitable as the main beginner workflow. The Android editor is another fallback, but Godot warns that the experience can be suboptimal compared with a desktop editor, especially without a keyboard and mouse: Android editor information.
Step 1: Turn on Linux on ChromeOS
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Developers.
- Beside Linux development environment, select Set up.
- Complete the wizard, then open the new Terminal app.
Setup can take 10 minutes or more and creates a Debian environment managed with APT. Update it before installing software:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Linux on ChromeOS does not require Developer Mode. If the Linux option is absent, update and restart ChromeOS, then check again. A model may be unsupported, or an administrator may have disabled Linux; on a managed device, contact the administrator rather than changing security settings. Google’s setup guidance is at Chromebook Linux development environment and its FAQ at Linux on ChromeOS FAQ.
Share folders between ChromeOS and Linux
Your regular ChromeOS Downloads folder is not automatically visible in Linux. In the ChromeOS Files app, right-click a project or asset folder and choose Share with Linux. Keep active projects in Linux storage or explicitly shared folders. Back up the Linux container with ChromeOS’s Linux backup feature, Google Drive, an external drive or Git; deleting the Linux environment can delete its files. See Google’s setup documentation at ChromeOS development setup.

Step 2: Match Godot to your Chromebook’s processor
In Terminal, run:
uname -m
| Command result | Godot build to download |
|---|---|
x86_64 |
Linux x86_64 |
aarch64 or arm64 |
Linux arm64 |
i686 or another 32-bit result |
Corresponding 32-bit build, if supported |
As of August 18, 2026, Godot’s official Linux page lists Godot 4.7.1, released July 14, 2026, in x86_64, x86_32, arm64 and arm32 builds: Godot Linux downloads.
Step 3: Download and launch Godot
- On the official Linux download page, choose the standard build matching your architecture. Do not choose .NET/C# for this browser-focused tutorial: Godot 4 C# projects currently cannot export to the Web.
- Place the downloaded archive in Linux files and extract it.
- In Terminal, change to the extracted directory, for example:
cd ~/Godot
Use Tab completion so the filename matches your release and architecture:
./Godot<Tab>
For an x86_64 4.7.1 download, the command may look like this:
./Godot_v4.7.1-stable_linux.x86_64
The package is self-contained; extracting and running it is sufficient. If Linux reports that it is not executable, adjust the actual filename:

chmod +x Godot_v4.7.1-stable_linux.x86_64
./Godot_v4.7.1-stable_linux.x86_64
Step 4: Create a small 2D game
Choose a deliberately small project called Collect the Coins: move around one arena, collect coins, avoid an enemy and display a score. It teaches scenes, nodes, sprites, collision shapes, input actions, GDScript, signals, timers, UI and game state without requiring a large content pipeline.
In Godot’s Project Manager:
- Click Create.
- Enter a project name.
- Choose a folder inside Linux storage, such as
/home/your-linux-username/projects/my_first_game. - Select the Compatibility renderer.
- Click Create.
Compatibility uses OpenGL 3.3-level requirements, is a sensible choice for Linux-on-ChromeOS hardware, and is required for Godot 4 Web export, which targets WebGL 2.0. Forward+ and Mobile target Vulkan-capable hardware and are poor defaults for this workflow. Keep the first project around 1152×648 or 1280×720, use modest textures, and avoid unnecessary particles and post-processing. Project-manager details are documented at Godot Project Manager.

Set keyboard controls
Open Project > Project Settings > Input Map and add move_left, move_right, move_up and move_down. Bind A/Left Arrow, D/Right Arrow, W/Up Arrow and S/Down Arrow respectively. Keyboard-first controls are the safest starting point on a Chromebook; add touch controls only after the desktop/browser version works.

Create the player
Make a CharacterBody2D player scene with a visible sprite (or a simple colored shape) and a CollisionShape2D. Attach scripts/player.gd:
extends CharacterBody2D
@export var speed := 250.0
func _physics_process(_delta):
var direction := Input.get_vector(
"move_left",
"move_right",
"move_up",
"move_down"
)
velocity = direction * speed
move_and_slide()
Input.get_vector() combines the four actions into a normalized direction, velocity sets movement speed, and move_and_slide() moves the CharacterBody2D. This script alone is not a finished game: add walls and collision shapes, coin areas that emit a collection signal, a score label, an enemy, and a win or game-over condition in main.tscn.
Godot’s complete beginner 2D tutorial covers the same progression—project structure, player movement, enemies and scoring—and is a useful companion: Your first 2D game.
Step 5: Test continuously
- Save the scene.
- Press F6 to run the current scene.
- Press F5 to run the project.
- If prompted, select
main.tscnas the main scene. - Read errors in the bottom Debugger panel.
- Fix one error, save, and run again.
Keep the game playable after every small milestone instead of writing all systems before testing. If a project crashes during startup, Project Manager recovery mode disables tool scripts, editor plugins, GDExtension add-ons, automatic scene restoration and project running; its documentation is included in the Project Manager guide.

Step 6: Use free art and sound legally
Draw simple art yourself with basic shapes, or use assets whose license clearly permits your intended use. “Free download” does not mean public domain, commercial use or no attribution. Check licenses for fonts, music, sound effects, character art and AI-generated assets individually. Godot’s license does not cover third-party assets or libraries.
Keep a CREDITS.md file from the first day:
Asset: coin.png
Creator: Example Artist
Source: [official asset page]
License: CC0
Attribution required: No
Changes made: Recolored
Record the creator, official source, license, attribution requirement and changes for every external asset. Include Godot’s required notice and the third-party notices in your game’s documentation or credits.
Step 7: Export a browser-playable game
- Open Editor > Manage Export Templates and install the Web template matching your Godot version.
- Open Project > Export (or click Export).
- Click Add and choose Web.
- Set the output name to
index.htmland choose anexports/web/folder. - Click Export Project.
Web export produces multiple files. Keep index.html, the generated JavaScript, WebAssembly and .pck files together. Do not open the HTML directly with file://; test through HTTP:
python serve.py --root .
If the container uses python3, run:
python3 serve.py --root .
Godot 4 Web export uses WebGL 2.0 and does not support C# projects. Inactive browser tabs may pause, autoplay policy may block sound until interaction, and save data depends on browser storage and cookies. Threaded exports can require cross-origin-isolation headers; a single-threaded export is generally easier for beginner hosting. Full guidance is at Godot Web export and Godot project exporting.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix a blank Web page
- Confirm the Web preset was used and the Compatibility renderer is selected.
- Upload every generated file, not just
index.html. - Serve through HTTP or HTTPS.
- Check browser developer tools for WebGL or JavaScript errors.
- Make sure the project is GDScript rather than C#.
Step 8: Publish free on itch.io
Create an itch.io project page and upload the complete Web export as an HTML5 game. Set it to free or pay-what-you-want, test the embedded game, and provide controls, browser requirements, screenshots and credits. This is a practical no-required-cost route for a finished browser prototype.
itch.io lets sellers configure the platform share from 0% to 100% (its payment page uses 10% as a default example). Its documentation currently describes payment-processing charges of approximately $0.30 plus 2.9%, and a $5 minimum balance for its payout system: itch.io payments. A free game can avoid a sale, but payment processing matters if you accept donations or paid downloads.
What Chromebook development cannot promise
- Developing in Linux does not make the result a ChromeOS-native app.
- A Chromebook cannot guarantee reliable performance for demanding 3D, large multiplayer or high-end projects.
- A Windows export should be tested on real Windows hardware or a separate testing service.
- Android export requires Android tooling and signing knowledge; the Chromebook’s Android subsystem is not a substitute for testing on multiple devices.
- Steam is a later commercial route, not a free first release: Steam Direct currently charges $100 per product, recoupable after $1,000 in adjusted gross revenue, and requires identity and tax information. Details are at Steam Direct.
If the Chromebook is too slow or local Linux is blocked, remote development can provide a stronger computer through remote desktop or cloud services, but it depends on another machine, reliable Internet and possibly paid usage. For a first game, reducing scope is usually better: one screen, one character, one enemy type, one collectible, one score, one restart button and one export target.
