If Windows, macOS, or Linux cannot open the volume, fix the connection, mount, drive letter, filesystem, or hardware before changing Steam. Do not format a disk that contains games you want to keep.
For the common Steam-only failure, add the existing library folder—not merely the physical drive—through Steam → Settings → Storage → + (Add Drive). Select the folder that contains steamapps, such as D:SteamLibrary or /mnt/games/SteamLibrary. Valve documents this Storage workflow here: Steam Support.
Use this quick diagnostic gate
- Drive missing from the operating system: Steam cannot fix an unmounted, offline, RAW, unallocated, or physically failing disk.
- Drive opens normally, but Steam does not list it: check the library path, drive letter or mount point, permissions, filesystem, and sandbox access.
- Steam lists the library, but games show Install: check the folder level, app-manifest files, account or installation differences, and library metadata.
If the disk disconnects, freezes, clicks, reports I/O errors, or repeatedly vanishes, stop verification attempts and copy important data before continuing.
Fix 1: Make sure the operating system sees the drive
Windows
- Safely eject and reconnect the drive directly to a USB port rather than a hub.
- Try another port and, if detachable, another cable.
- Open File Explorer and check whether the volume opens.
- Press
Win+R, enterdiskmgmt.msc, and inspect the disk.
In Disk Management, a usable volume should be online, have a filesystem, and have a drive letter. If it has no letter, assign one. If it is shown as RAW, unallocated, or offline, do not initialize or format it when the game files matter; prioritize backup or data recovery.

macOS
- Open Disk Utility.
- Choose View → Show All Devices.
- Select the volume and choose Mount if necessary.
- Use First Aid only after important data is backed up.
Apple notes that filesystem format and ownership settings affect whether a Mac can write to an external volume: Apple Support.
Linux and Steam Deck
Run:
lsblk -f
mount | grep -E 'media|mnt|run/media'Confirm the expected filesystem and that the volume is mounted at a path you can browse and write to. If the file manager cannot open it, Steam is not the first problem.
Fix 2: Add the existing SteamLibrary folder
Steam does not generally scan every external disk and adopt arbitrary game folders. The selected directory should be the library’s parent folder, containing a structure like:
SteamLibrary/
├── steamapps/
│ ├── appmanifest_*.acf
│ ├── common/
│ └── downloading/
└── shadercache/Typical paths are D:SteamLibrary, D:GamesSteamLibrary, or /mnt/games/SteamLibrary. Selecting only steamappscommon is usually wrong, while selecting the disk root can make Steam create a new library instead of recognizing the old one.

- Open Steam.
- Go to Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Click the + button or Add Drive.
- Browse to the existing
SteamLibraryfolder. - Confirm it, then restart Steam if the games do not appear immediately.
A successful connection normally changes affected games from Install to Play or Update. Community reports also commonly resolve “zero games” by re-adding the parent library folder rather than the disk itself: Steam Community discussion, Steam Community discussion.

Fix 3: Restore the drive letter or mount path
Windows
Windows can assign a different letter when a removable disk is connected to another computer or when other disks are present. Compare the path shown in Steam’s Storage page with the current path in File Explorer. In Disk Management, assign the external volume a stable, unused letter, restart Steam, and re-add the library if the old entry still points nowhere.
Linux
Check that the mount point has not changed—for example, from /media/name/Games to /run/media/name/Games. Steam must start after the disk is mounted. Persistent fstab configuration is distribution-specific; do not copy a generic entry without confirming the correct UUID, user ID, group ID, and mount options.
macOS
Confirm that the volume is mounted under the expected name and avoid repeatedly renaming it, since paths and permissions can change.
Fix 4: Repair the library and verify game files
- In Settings → Storage, select the external library.
- Open its menu and choose Repair Library, if that option is available in your client build.
- For an individual game, open Properties and run Verify integrity of game files.
Library repair addresses Steam’s path or metadata connection; verification can restore missing files and download changed or damaged ones. Neither operation repairs a failing disk or a damaged filesystem. Valve recommends backing up steamapps before a major move or migration: Steam Support.
Do not delete appmanifest_*.acf files as a first-line fix. They contain installation metadata that helps Steam identify the games.

Fix 5: Correct permissions, filesystem, or sandbox access
Windows
Try creating and deleting a temporary text file in the library folder. If that fails, inspect NTFS security permissions, write protection, and security software that may block Steam. Avoid recursively taking ownership unless you understand the consequences.
For a Windows-only library, NTFS is generally the safer default. exFAT can help with cross-device transfer but has different permission and reliability characteristics; an exFAT library is not automatically unusable.

macOS
macOS commonly reads NTFS but normally cannot write to it without additional software. If Steam can see the disk but cannot create or update files, check whether the volume is read-only and whether ownership settings permit changes. Apple’s filesystem guidance is at Apple Support. Do not reformat until the library is backed up and you have decided that cross-platform use is no longer needed.
Linux and Steam Deck
The Steam user needs write and execute access to the library. Check that:
- the mount is writable and not using
noexec; - the Steam user can create a file in the library;
- the filesystem driver and mount options support the workload; and
- the package you installed can access the path.
Valve issue reports document failures involving permissions, NTFS/exFAT configurations, and sandbox restrictions: issue 10268, issue 9666, and issue 8450. Do not use a blanket chmod 777; the correct owner, group, and mount options depend on your distribution and filesystem.

With Flatpak Steam, grant access to the specific mounted directory through Flatpak permissions or a tool such as Flatseal. This applies to sandboxed installations, not necessarily native packages.
Fix 6: Reconnect library metadata without deleting game files
- Exit Steam completely.
- Back up the external drive’s
steamappsfolder, includingappmanifest_*.acf,common,shadercache, andcompatdatawhere applicable. - Reopen Steam and remove only the stale library entry from the Storage page.
- Add the existing parent
SteamLibraryfolder again. - If one game still says Install, choose Install and select that same library location. Steam may discover the existing files and verify them instead of downloading everything, but this is a fallback, not a guarantee.

Never format the drive, delete steamapps, or remove all game folders merely because Steam labels them uninstalled. Manual edits to libraryfolders.vdf and Steam Console workarounds are advanced recovery methods with limited official support; see Valve’s issue report.
Special cases that need different expectations
Only some games are missing
Partial loss usually indicates missing individual manifests, multiple library folders, an incomplete copy, another Steam account or installation, or operating-system-specific compatibility data. A game folder under common without its manifest may not be recognized automatically.
Windows and Linux sharing one drive
Keep separate libraries when possible. Valve’s Linux issue tracker describes sharing a Windows/Linux library as unsupported or capable of undefined behavior: issue 12139. Proton prefixes, ownership metadata, locks, and files modified by both systems can require verification or partial redownloads. Back up saves and configuration files before switching systems.

Network shares and NAS
A network-mounted path has different availability, locking, permissions, and latency from a directly attached USB disk. Do not treat it as equivalent; Valve issue reports include library-add problems on network-mounted paths: issue 10381.
Repeated disconnections
Test another cable, direct port, powered connection, and computer. If the drive continues disappearing, use the manufacturer’s health diagnostic and prioritize cloning or backup. Repeated verification on an unstable disk can worsen corruption.
What the external-drive warning from Valve means
Valve cautions against installing the Steam client itself on an external drive because of potential performance problems. That warning is distinct from storing game libraries on a separate external drive. Library performance still depends on the drive, enclosure, USB connection, filesystem, and permissions. An SSD generally loads and updates games faster than an HDD, but buying another drive does not solve a wrong path or inaccessible mount.

Can I use an external SSD for Steam games?
Yes, provided the operating system mounts it reliably and Steam can read, write, and execute from the library path. Add the existing folder containing steamapps in Settings → Storage.

Steam may be pointing to a changed drive letter or mount path, the wrong folder level, or a library missing its appmanifest_*.acf files. Reconnect the correct parent library folder before considering a reinstall.
Should I select the drive root or SteamLibrary?
Select the existing SteamLibrary folder that contains steamapps. Selecting steamappscommon is usually too deep, while selecting the root can create a new library.
Will removing a Steam library entry delete the games?
Removing a stale entry from Steam’s Storage interface is intended to remove the registration, not erase the files, but read the confirmation prompt and back up steamapps first.
Do I need to reinstall every game?
Not necessarily. Re-adding the correct library can restore detection, and the Install-button fallback may verify existing files. Outcomes vary when manifests are missing, files are incomplete, or the library was used by another operating system.
