Before changing anything: confirm the PC is supported
Steam lists DirectX 11 support for the game. Its DirectX 12 requirements additionally call for Windows 10 version 1809 or later and a GPU with 4 GB of VRAM; those are listed requirements, not a guarantee that every supported system will be stable. Check the actual hardware before treating an underpowered or unsupported configuration as a broken installation.
- Press Win + R, enter
dxdiag, and press Enter. - Use the System tab to note the Windows edition, 64-bit status, processor, and RAM.
- Use the Display tabs to identify each GPU, its available VRAM, and the DirectX information.
- Compare those details with the Steam requirements for Monster Hunter: World.
Capcom warns that some integrated and newer laptop GPUs, multi-GPU configurations, SLI/CrossFire, external GPUs, mobile GPUs, and Windows Insider builds may be untested or unsupported. On a laptop, first force the game to the discrete GPU using the method in Fix 4; do not disable an integrated GPU in BIOS as a first step.
1. Verify the Steam installation
Verification is safe, reversible, and can replace missing or damaged game files. It cannot repair drivers, Windows components, hardware, or third-party modifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Introduces Kirin, a lightning-charged elder dragon mega boss that delivers one of the most demanding and strategic hunts in Monster Hunter World: The Board Game.
- Expands campaign depth with branching quests, rare loot rewards, and powerful crafting paths that reshape how hunters prepare for future encounters.
- Features escalating difficulty as Kirin grows more dangerous, forcing players to adapt tactics, optimize builds, and master risk-reward decisions.
- Includes a highly detailed Kirin miniature with commanding table presence, enhancing immersion and visual impact during epic boss battles.
- Designed for experienced tabletop players seeking intense cooperative gameplay, advanced strategy, and meaningful long-term progression.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Monster Hunter: World and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (older Steam layouts call this Local files).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam before launching the game again.
Capcom notes that one or more files can fail verification because local configuration files are not necessarily replaced. That message alone does not prove the installation is corrupted. If Steam repeatedly reacquires the same files, check antivirus interference, write permissions, disk errors, and mods instead of repeating verification indefinitely.
2. Remove mods, loaders, and injected files
Test a completely unmodded installation, particularly if Iceborne is installed. A changed dinput8.dll, NativePC folder, ReShade or DXVK file, frame-generation injector, or leftover loader can interfere with startup, updates, and verification. Their presence is a diagnostic branch, not proof that a mod caused the crash.
- Close the game and Steam.
- Back up the MHW installation folder.
- Move third-party DLLs and mod folders out of the game directory; do not delete your save directory.
- Start Steam and run file verification again.
- Launch the vanilla game. If it works, restore mods one at a time until the conflicting item is identified.
Capcom’s Iceborne troubleshooting guidance recommends returning modified files to an unaltered state when diagnosing problems.
3. Disable overlays for one test
Overlays inject software into the game process. Capcom’s material does not establish that every overlay causes MHW crashes, but temporarily removing them is a useful isolation test.
- Steam Overlay
- Discord overlay
- NVIDIA or AMD overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner on-screen display
- ReShade and other rendering injectors
Restart Steam after disabling them and test the unmodded game. Re-enable each overlay later, one at a time, if the game is stable.

- Includes pre-coloured Azure Rathalos and Black Diablos miniatures that visually match their legendary variants, enhancing immersion and table presence.
- Designed to pair seamlessly with existing Monster Hunter World quests and cards, allowing hunters to experience encounters with accurate monster representation.
- Features large, highly detailed PVC figures that command attention during hunts, painting projects, or display collections.
- Ideal for collectors, hobbyists, and experienced players seeking elevated aesthetics without replacing existing gameplay components.
- Enhances cinematic impact and thematic authenticity during battles against two of the most iconic Monster Hunter adversaries.
4. Force the dedicated GPU
Some laptops launch MHW on integrated graphics even when a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU is installed. Use Windows or the vendor control panel before considering any BIOS change.
Windows Graphics settings
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add
MonsterHunterWorld.exeif it is not listed. - Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Relaunch MHW.
Labels vary slightly by Windows release, but the required setting is the high-performance GPU for the game executable.
NVIDIA Control Panel
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Choose Manage 3D settings → Program Settings.
- Add or select
MonsterHunterWorld.exe. - Select the high-performance NVIDIA processor and click Apply.
Capcom documents this dual-GPU route in its general Steam troubleshooting guide.

5. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates, then install the current driver for the GPU actually shown by dxdiag. Download directly from the manufacturer:
Restart Windows and test MHW before changing several other variables. “Latest” is not always “best”: if the crash began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver is a reasonable diagnostic step.

- Kushala Daora shields itself with fierce winds, preventing anyone from approaching. Its skin — hard, metallic scales — can withstand all but the strongest weapons. You may as well try slaying a hurricane.
- Brace yourself against raging winds with this elder dragon expansion, featuring the colossal Kushala Daora! Towering at more than 255mm tall with over a foot-long wingspan, Kushala Daora is the biggest monster in Monster Hunter World: The Board Game.
- A draconic manifestation of arctic fury, Kushala Daora will force you to fight for every inch of ground you cover, and add a whole new level of difficulty and crafting to your game.
- With new choice-driven adventures to explore, new loot to collect, and rare new weapons to craft, this massive monster will widen your campaigns, changing your approach to core set monsters by opening your world to different paths to success.
- Battle increasingly tougher versions of Kushala Daora, crafting powerful elder dragon weapons to defeat even stronger monsters before you face the final boss!
Use a clean driver reinstall only when multiple games fail, the driver installation is visibly damaged, the problem began after an update, or a normal reinstall has not helped. Capcom mentions Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) as a commonly used third-party utility, not a requirement. If you use it, obtain it from its genuine developer source and understand the recovery steps first.
6. Reset graphics configuration and repair DirectX
Reset settings when the game cannot reach its menu
A demanding resolution or graphics option can prevent startup. Back up graphics_option.ini before editing it. The default Steam location is:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchC:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonMonster Hunter World
Open the file, lower demanding graphics or resolution values, save it, and launch again. This resets graphics configuration; it does not delete saved games. Capcom documents this procedure at its graphics-option support entry.
Repair DirectX through supported channels
Install pending Windows updates, run the latest Microsoft-supported DirectX installer package where appropriate, and restart. Never download individual “DirectX DLL” files from random websites. Do not treat a universal -dx11 or -dx12 launch command as an official fix; behavior varies by build and configuration.

For ERR12: Graphics device crashed, return overclocks and undervolts to stock, update or roll back the driver if timing points to a driver regression, lower settings, reset the configuration, and disable overlays or injectors. Capcom’s dedicated guidance is at this ERR12 entry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsERR03: Failed to initialize DirectX11 can indicate missing DirectX 11 components, an incompatible video card, or an unsupported Windows configuration; see Capcom’s ERR03 guidance. ERR14: Graphics API not implemented can involve an outdated driver or malfunctioning DirectX functionality; see the ERR14 entry.
7. Check antivirus, firewall, and permissions
Security software can block a legitimate executable as a false positive. Add a narrow, temporary exclusion for the game or executable rather than disabling protection globally. Capcom lists these possible locations:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonMonster Hunter WorldC:Program Files (x86)SteamSteam.exeC:Users%USERNAME%AppDataLocalSteam
Remove the exclusion if it makes no difference. Never replace an executable with one downloaded from an unofficial site.
For a permissions test, close Steam, right-click Steam.exe, choose Run as administrator, and launch MHW. If necessary, test MonsterHunterWorld.exe the same way. Administrator mode is diagnostic, not a permanent requirement; running every game elevated weakens the security boundary.

8. Install the correct Windows Media components
Capcom includes Windows Media Player codec updates in its Steam troubleshooting steps. This is particularly relevant to Windows N and K editions, which may omit Media Player components.
- Open Settings → System → About and check the Windows edition.
- If it is an N or K edition, install the Microsoft Media Feature Pack matching that Windows version.
- Restart Windows and test MHW.
Avoid arbitrary codec packs first; competing filters can create another failure source. See Capcom’s current Steam troubleshooting guidance and Iceborne guide.
Black screen or display-information errors
For ERR04: Failed to get display info, Capcom describes a failure to find a usable display output, resolution, or color mode through DirectX. Try one standard-resolution monitor, disconnect unusual adapters temporarily, disable HDR for the test, reset graphics_option.ini, and update the GPU driver. These are isolation steps, not proof that a monitor or GPU is defective. Capcom’s entry is available here.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
After the ordered tests, stop repeating verification and preserve evidence. Capcom says a CrashReport folder is created by default when the game crashes.

dxdiag, choose Save All Information, and keepDxDiag.txt. - Record Windows edition, CPU, GPU, driver version, Iceborne status, mod history, exact failure point, and any error code.
- Check free disk space and drive health if Steam repeatedly reacquires files.
- Submit the details through Capcom’s official Monster Hunter: World support page. Avoid posting crash reports publicly because they can contain personal system information.
Back up configuration files before editing them, never delete save data as a crash fix, avoid permanent antivirus shutdown, and leave BIOS changes for manufacturer-documented cases.
