PPSSPP does not include commercial games. It supports ISO, CSO and CHD files, and its iPhone app does not normally require a jailbreak, sideloading or a PSP BIOS.
What you need
- An iPhone that can run the version of iOS required by the App Store listing.
- The official PPSSPP app.
- A PSP game image you’re legally entitled to use, or a homebrew game or demo.
- Enough free storage for the game file. An optional controller can make games with analog movement or frequent shoulder-button use more comfortable.
Install the official PPSSPP app
In the U.S. App Store listing, the app is named PPSSPP – PSP emulator, and the developer is Henrik Rydgård. Check both before installing so you don’t mistake an unrelated app for the official emulator. The listing states a minimum of iOS 13.0; availability and requirements may differ by region or change over time. The app is free, with an optional Gold purchase. Check the U.S. App Store listing.
- Open the App Store and search for PPSSPP – PSP emulator.
- Confirm the developer is Henrik Rydgård, then tap Get and authenticate.
- Open PPSSPP once so iOS creates the app’s storage location.
The App Store version is the simplest route for most people. Older guides may lead with jailbreaks, AltStore, SideStore or certificate signing, but those are not required to install the official App Store app. PPSSPP’s documentation describes sideloading as an advanced alternative, not the ordinary setup path.
Get PSP games legally and use a supported file format
PPSSPP is an emulator; it does not supply commercial PSP games. Use a game file you are legally entitled to use, an authorized download, or legitimate homebrew and demos. Copyright and personal-backup rules vary by jurisdiction, so owning a disc does not automatically make every copying or downloading method lawful. PPSSPP explains game acquisition and dumping a UMD game; neither explanation is a substitute for local legal advice. Avoid unauthorized game-download sites.

The main supported game-image formats are ISO, CSO and CHD. ISO is a straightforward format to troubleshoot; CSO and CHD can save storage, but no one format is guaranteed to be fastest in every game. A ZIP, 7z or RAR archive is not necessarily ready to play: extract it first, and do not try to convert it by merely changing the filename extension. If a game image is split into parts, recombine it properly before importing. Keep an untouched copy of your original file before attempting conversion or compression. See PPSSPP’s getting-started guide for demos and homebrew as well as game setup.
Transfer a game to PPSSPP
Option 1: Upload over Wi-Fi
PPSSPP’s Wi-Fi uploader is available in version 1.20 and later. Your iPhone and the device holding the game file must be on the same Wi-Fi network. This is often the easiest method when you don’t want to connect a cable.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, then open PPSSPP on the iPhone.
- Open the Games tab and navigate to the folder where you want the game stored.
- Tap Upload Files (the folder icon with an upward arrow). PPSSPP displays a local web address.
- On the other device, enter that address in a browser, including the port number if shown, and use the page to select and upload the ISO, CSO or CHD file.
- Return to PPSSPP and browse to the destination folder. Tap the game to launch it.
Keep PPSSPP open during the transfer, particularly for a large file. If the upload page won’t connect, confirm both devices are on the same local network, temporarily disable a VPN if it interferes with local connections, and try the displayed address exactly. If it still fails, transfer by USB instead. The uploader steps are described in PPSSPP’s game-transfer guide.

Option 2: Copy from a Mac with Finder
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable and open Finder.
- Select the iPhone in Finder, open the Files tab and select PPSSPP in the app list.
- Drag the game file into PPSSPP’s documents area and let the copy finish.
- Open PPSSPP on the iPhone, go to Games and browse to the copied file.
Copying a file into the Mac’s Downloads folder does not put it on the iPhone. It must be transferred into PPSSPP’s app storage. See the PPSSPP iOS support guide.
Option 3: Copy from Windows with Apple Devices
- Install Apple Devices on Windows, connect the iPhone by USB and open the device-management view.
- Find its file-sharing area, select PPSSPP and copy the game file into the app’s documents area.
- Open PPSSPP and find the file in the Games tab.
The exact layout can vary with the installed Apple Devices version. Use the app’s file-sharing controls rather than assuming older iTunes-only instructions apply. PPSSPP outlines this route in its iOS support documentation.
Option 4: Use Files or cloud storage
Save the game image to Files, iCloud Drive or another supported location. If the share sheet offers PPSSPP, use it; otherwise, copy the file into the PPSSPP folder under On My iPhone, then browse to it in the emulator. Share-sheet options depend on iOS and the file type. If a cloud file has not finished downloading to the phone, copy or open it locally before trying to launch it. PPSSPP’s documented Wi-Fi and computer-transfer methods are more predictable.

- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
Launch your game
- In PPSSPP, tap Games and browse to the folder containing the game image.
- Tap the game title or file and wait for the PSP boot screen or game intro.
- Once it starts, create a normal in-game save as soon as it is practical.
If the game is missing from the browser, check that the transfer finished, the file is in PPSSPP storage and the file is an extracted ISO, CSO or CHD rather than an archive. Browse to the folder again or restart PPSSPP after copying. Testing a legitimate homebrew game or another known-good image can help tell an import problem from a game-specific compatibility issue.
Choose touch controls or a game controller
Use the touchscreen
PPSSPP provides an on-screen PSP layout, so you can play without buying anything. Depending on the version, its control settings let you reposition or resize buttons and adjust their opacity. The virtual analog nub can be awkward for sustained movement, and the overlay covers part of the picture. Touch controls are less convenient in games that demand precise analog movement or frequent shoulder-button presses.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pair and configure a controller
- Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller through Settings → Bluetooth in iOS.
- Open PPSSPP’s control configuration and check the mapping for both sticks, shoulder buttons, Start and Select.
- Rebind any missing, reversed or inconvenient inputs, then test them in-game.
A supported wired controller may also work, depending on the iPhone’s connector and the controller. A telescopic model gives a handheld feel; a conventional Xbox or PlayStation controller is more flexible but usually needs a stand or phone mount. Don’t assume every controller’s rumble, gyro, rear buttons or other extra features will work in PPSSPP on iOS. The PPSSPP FAQ covers gamepad support and troubleshooting.

Adjust graphics, performance and battery use
Start with PPSSPP’s default settings and see how the game behaves before changing several options at once. Compatibility and speed depend on the game, iPhone model, rendering settings and thermal conditions; iOS 13 compatibility does not guarantee that every title will run perfectly.
- Lower rendering resolution first: Try 1× or 2× if an older phone stutters, then raise it gradually if performance remains smooth.
- Leave frameskip off initially: Use it only if needed; it can make motion look uneven.
- Avoid broad speed-hack changes: Try them only to address a specific problem, since they can cause glitches.
- Restore defaults if graphics break: If you see missing or distorted graphics, undo recent changes. PPSSPP warns that Skip buffer effects (called disabling buffered rendering in older wording) can cause rendering problems.
- Reduce heat and power load: Lower resolution, close demanding background apps and let a hot phone cool. Brightness, game, frame rate and network use also affect battery drain.
The PPSSPP project says modern iPhones can generally handle PSP emulation without JIT. App Store restrictions mean the ordinary iOS build cannot use JIT compilation in the usual way, but that does not make sideloading a prerequisite. Actual performance and battery use vary; there is no single result that applies to every iPhone or game. See PPSSPP’s iOS notes and its FAQ.

Normal in-game saves are created by the game and are the safer choice for important progress. Save states capture the emulator at a particular moment and are convenient, but may become unreliable if you change emulator versions, settings or game images.

- Make normal in-game saves regularly; treat save states as a convenience, not your only backup.
- Use multiple save slots where a game’s save system is fragile.
- Before deleting or reinstalling PPSSPP, back up its files. The FAQ refers to save folders named
SAVEDATAandPPSSPP_STATE. - Do not assume a save state from a different platform or PPSSPP build will transfer reliably.
Save details and folder guidance are available in the PPSSPP FAQ.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| PPSSPP is missing from App Store search | Search term, regional availability and iOS compatibility | Search the exact app name and confirm the developer; check the iOS requirement in your region’s listing. |
| Game does not appear in PPSSPP | File location, transfer completion and whether the file is still archived | Copy it into PPSSPP storage, extract the archive, browse to the folder again and restart the app if needed. |
| Game fails to load | Incomplete or damaged image, unsupported file or game-specific compatibility | Re-copy the image, test another game, or try an ISO to simplify troubleshooting. |
| Black screen or broken graphics | Recent rendering changes or a game-specific issue | Restore default graphics settings and undo hacks; change one setting at a time. |
| Stuttering or excess heat | High rendering resolution, demanding background apps or thermal load | Lower resolution, close demanding apps and let the phone cool. |
| Controller connects but buttons are wrong | Input mapping or controller mode | Open PPSSPP’s control settings and rebind the affected inputs. |
| Wi-Fi upload will not connect | Different networks, VPN interference or PPSSPP being backgrounded | Use the same Wi-Fi, temporarily disable the VPN, keep PPSSPP open and enter the full displayed address. Use USB as a fallback. |
| Save seems to have disappeared | Wrong save location, deleted app storage or a save-state mismatch | Look for the normal save in SAVEDATA; restore a backup if available and avoid relying on states alone. |
| Emulator asks for a BIOS file | You may be following instructions for a different emulator or system | PPSSPP normally does not require a PSP BIOS. Confirm the file is actually for a PSP game. |
Do you need JIT, sideloading or a jailbreak?
No. The App Store version is the recommended starting point for ordinary PSP play, and PPSSPP says modern iPhones generally have enough performance without JIT. Sideloading may be of interest to advanced users pursuing JIT or experimental behavior, but adds signing, refresh and security considerations; it is not necessary just to get a game running. The official iOS documentation discusses the differences and limitations at PPSSPP iOS support.
Know what PPSSPP can and cannot run
PPSSPP emulates PlayStation Portable software. It is not an emulator for PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, PS Vita or Nintendo systems. It also does not run PS1 games that depended on the PSP’s proprietary PS1 emulator. Changing another console’s file extension to ISO will not make it a PSP game. Some PSP DLC, patches and save files also depend on correct folder structure and a matching game identifier or region. See the PPSSPP introduction and FAQ.
Is PPSSPP Gold necessary?
No. The free base app is the way to start; Gold is optional, not a requirement to import or play PSP games. The U.S. App Store listing showed Gold at $3.99 on August 16, 2026; prices and availability can vary by country and change over time. Check the listing in your region before purchasing: PPSSPP on the U.S. App Store.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Multiplayer is game-dependent
PPSSPP supports some PSP networking and ad hoc multiplayer features, but support depends on the game and configuration. Some original PSP online services are no longer available, and online play may require additional community infrastructure or setup. Confirm that the specific title and mode work before planning a session. The App Store listing’s release notes mention changes to the ad hoc multiplayer interface; that does not guarantee compatibility for every game: U.S. App Store listing.
