The October 24, 2024 leak was directionally accurate, but it was not an independent benchmark. AMD later launched the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on October 31, 2024 and officially claimed an average gaming improvement of about 8% over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Independent testing found a similar average uplift, while showing that the real difference ranges from negligible in GPU-limited games to substantial in selected CPU-limited titles. The leaked “up to 15%” multithreaded figure remains a workload-dependent marketing claim, not a universal productivity guarantee.
What the leaked AMD slide claimed
The original report described an alleged AMD presentation slide comparing the unreleased Ryzen 7 9800X3D with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It listed approximately 8% higher gaming performance and up to 15% better multithreaded performance. Those were AMD-attributed marketing figures, not measurements from an independent review, so they should initially have been treated as targets rather than guaranteed retail results. The 9800X3D is now a shipping product
AMD officially launched the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on October 31, 2024 at a suggested U.S. price of $479. It has eight cores, 16 threads, a 4.7 GHz base clock, boost clocks up to 5.2 GHz, 104 MB of total cache, a 120 W default TDP and the AM5 socket. (AMD investor relations)
The chip combines Zen 5 cores with second-generation 3D V-Cache. AMD moved the cache beneath the compute die, allowing the cores to sit closer to the heat spreader. That arrangement is intended to improve thermal transfer and permit higher clocks than the Zen 4-based 7800X3D. Both chips retain eight cores and 16 threads, but the 7800X3D is rated at 4.2 GHz base and up to 5.0 GHz boost, with a 120 W TDP.

Was the 8% gaming claim confirmed?
Broadly, yes. AMD’s launch material reported an average gaming gain of about 8% over the 7800X3D. Its comparison used a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, 2×16 GB of DDR5-6000, a Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master motherboard, Windows virtualization and security settings, Smart Access Memory, balanced power settings and Kraken X63 cooling across a large game list including Cyberpunk 2077, Counter-Strike 2, Starfield, Baldur’s Gate 3, F1 2024, Hitman 3 and Hogwarts Legacy. (AMD’s launch announcement)
“About 8% on average” does not mean 8% in every game. TechSpot’s later comparison also found roughly an 8% average advantage, but individual results varied considerably. CPU-heavy games can show double-digit gains, while a title limited by the graphics card may barely change. Minimum frame rates and frame-time consistency can improve more than average FPS, which may make the newer chip feel smoother without producing a dramatic headline increase. (TechSpot testing)

What the “up to 15%” multithreaded figure means
The 15% number belongs to the leaked slide and should be attributed as an “up to” claim. It is not evidence that every renderer, compiler, encoder or compression tool runs 15% faster. Zen 5 instruction-per-clock improvements, higher clocks, memory behavior, firmware and the selected applications could all affect a particular result. Cache-heavy software may benefit substantially; workloads that scale mainly with core count may show less difference.
Both processors have only eight cores and 16 threads. Buyers whose priority is sustained rendering, video production, software compilation or other heavily threaded work should compare application benchmarks and consider 12- or 16-core Ryzen 9 models rather than assuming an eight-core X3D processor is the best productivity choice.

Should a 7800X3D owner upgrade?
High-refresh competitive players
An upgrade is most defensible with a top-end GPU, 1080p play, a 240 Hz or faster display and games that are demonstrably CPU-limited. Sell the 7800X3D and calculate the net cost rather than comparing only processor prices.

1440p and 4K gamers
At 1440p the gain depends heavily on the graphics card and game. At 4K, a saturated GPU often leaves the two CPUs producing nearly identical frame rates. A 7800X3D that already meets your target is usually the better value.
Simulation and strategy players
Large simulations, strategy titles, MMOs and some open-world games can expose CPU limits and benefit more than average benchmark figures suggest. Check results for the specific games you play.
Best Value

Productivity users
Do not use the gaming average or the leaked 15% figure as a productivity forecast. Compare your applications directly, and include higher-core Ryzen 9 alternatives.
Platform requirements
Both processors use AM5, so a motherboard and DDR5 replacement is normally unnecessary. Verify BIOS support for your exact board before installation; an update may be required. RAM capacity, timings and EXPO settings can also affect results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which CPU should a new buyer choose?
- Choose the 9800X3D when maximum AM5 gaming performance, high refresh rates and CPU-limited titles matter more than the lowest purchase price.
- Choose the 7800X3D when it is substantially discounted and your GPU or resolution will hide most of the newer chip’s advantage.
- Consider a Ryzen 9 when rendering, encoding, compiling or other sustained multithreaded work is central to the system.
- Check newer X3D models: AMD’s U.S. store also lists a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, so the 9800X3D should not automatically be called AMD’s newest or fastest eight-core gaming processor. (AMD processor lineup)
Remember that a complete build also requires a motherboard, DDR5 memory, cooler and graphics card. A processor premium that buys an 8% average gaming gain may be less valuable than spending the same money on a faster GPU.
Bottom line
The leaked slide got the broad gaming direction right: AMD later confirmed about an 8% average advantage, and independent testing found a similar result. That is a useful but modest generational gain, not a guaranteed uplift in every game. The alleged 15% multithreaded improvement remains dependent on the workload and test selection. The 9800X3D is a strong choice for a new high-refresh gaming build or a major upgrade from an older CPU; for most 7800X3D owners, especially those playing GPU-limited 1440p or 4K games, upgrading is a luxury rather than a necessity.
