KB5037864 was a Windows 11 24H2 Insider build—not a general update—and it tested a Game Pass promotion in Settings

Microsoft’s KB5037864 was a May 2024 Dev Channel preview based on Windows 11 24H2. It tested a Game Pass recommendation in Settings, with eligibility limits, staged delivery and a documented Widgets shortcut bug.

KB5037864 was not a normal Windows 11 update for everyone. On May 10, 2024, Microsoft released Insider Preview Build 26120.470 to the Windows Insider Dev Channel. Based on the developing Windows 11 24H2 branch, it tested a Game Pass recommendation card in Settings alongside a broad set of system and enterprise fixes. Microsoft warned that Dev Channel features could change, disappear, or never ship publicly.

What KB5037864 actually was

Microsoft identified KB5037864 as Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.470, released on May 10, 2024, for the Dev Channel. The build was based on the Windows 11 version 24H2 development line; it was not evidence that the final 24H2 feature update had reached every Windows 11 PC.

That distinction matters. Stable Windows updates are intended for general production use. Dev Channel builds are experimental development releases that can contain regressions, unfinished work and features that are withdrawn before a public release. Microsoft’s announcement also said that Dev Channel features could be changed, removed or never released outside Insider testing. Microsoft’s Build 26120.470 announcement is the authoritative release note.

The Game Pass card in Settings

The attention-grabbing change was a Game Pass recommendation card on the Windows 11 Settings homepage. Microsoft did not formally call it an advertisement, although describing it as an in-product subscription promotion or “ad” is understandable: the card promoted a paid Microsoft service inside a system app.

Who could see it

  • The device had to be running a Dev Channel build containing the experience.
  • The Settings homepage experience was limited to Windows 11 Home and Pro in Microsoft’s announcement.
  • The user had to be signed in with a Microsoft account.
  • Microsoft said the card was aimed at people who actively played PC games.
  • Availability was controlled through a gradual rollout, so installing the build did not guarantee that the card would appear.

The card promoted Game Pass; it did not grant a free subscription. Catalogs, features and availability vary by region, plan, platform and time. Microsoft’s current PC Game Pass information is available at Xbox’s official PC Game Pass page.

How Microsoft delivered the feature

Insiders could check Settings → Windows Update → Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Microsoft used that setting to deliver some features earlier as rollouts expanded. Turning it on did not guarantee the Game Pass card, because edition, account status, gaming activity and staged availability also mattered. Leaving it off did not necessarily block the feature forever; Microsoft could deliver it later when ready.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Microsoft’s announcement did not document a dedicated switch, policy or registry setting for removing this specific card. Unsupported registry changes are therefore a poor way to pursue an optional preview experience.

What else the build fixed or changed

The Game Pass card was the consumer-facing headline, but KB5037864 also addressed important Windows components. The release notes included:

  • MSIX localization improvements after upgrading Windows.
  • A Settings responsiveness fix when removing Bluetooth devices.

Known issue and the risk of using a Dev build

Build 26120.470 had a documented problem: Win + W might not work correctly when opening Widgets. That issue, combined with Microsoft’s warning about experimental features, is a practical reminder that this was not a production-polished update.

Dev Channel participation can also make recovery or channel changes inconvenient. A feature delivered in this build might be incomplete, altered or abandoned. The build therefore made sense for testers, developers and IT teams validating upcoming Windows behavior—not for a reliability-sensitive primary computer.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

How an Insider could check the build

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On a device enrolled in the Dev Channel, choose Check for updates.
  4. If offered, review Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available; this is an early-feature delivery option, not a guarantee that the Game Pass card will appear.
  5. After installation, search Windows for winver and confirm whether the system reports build 26120.470.

Do not join the Dev Channel solely to see, remove or investigate a subscription recommendation. The channel’s instability trade-off is much larger than the value of this single card.

Who should install KB5037864?

User Assessment
Windows Insider tester or developer Reasonable if you accept regressions and want early 24H2 development features.
IT professional Useful on a test device or lab for validating enterprise behavior.
Primary work or reliability-sensitive PC Not recommended; use the stable Windows release instead.
User who only wants final Windows 11 24H2 Do not treat this Dev build as the final public feature update.
User interested only in Game Pass Do not enter the Dev Channel for the promotion; evaluate the subscription separately.

What the headline gets wrong

  • “Microsoft rolled out KB5037864 to Windows 11 users” overstates distribution; Microsoft released it to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.
  • “Windows 11 24H2 received the update” needs an Insider qualifier because this was a 24H2 development build.
  • “Microsoft added ads” is editorial shorthand. Microsoft called the feature a Game Pass recommendation card, while users may reasonably view it as a Microsoft subscription upsell.
  • “Everyone saw the card” is incorrect because eligibility and staged rollout conditions applied.

In short, KB5037864 tested a promotional Settings experience while delivering substantial engineering fixes. It did not make Xbox advertising universal across Windows 11, and it did not establish that the same card would become a permanent feature in a later retail release.
