The amount becomes Steam Wallet credit, which you then apply separately at checkout. Official digital Steam Gift Cards work through the recipient’s Steam notification instead of the retail-code form. Valve is phasing out retail physical cards during 2026, but cards already sold remain redeemable subject to local law.
Before you start
- A Steam account and access to the account you intend to credit.
- The complete Wallet Code, including every letter and number.
- An internet connection.
- A card or code bought from Steam or a legitimate retailer. Keep the original receipt.

How to redeem a physical Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code
- Sign in to the Steam account that should receive the money.
- Open the official page: Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code.
- Check the displayed account and current Wallet balance before entering anything.
- Type the code into the Steam Wallet Code field.
- Select Continue.
- After confirmation, refresh the account page and verify that the Wallet balance increased.
Steam’s support instructions describe this same sign-in, code-entry, and Continue process: Steam Wallet and gift-card support.
Desktop client, phone, or tablet
Steam client labels can vary by version and language. If you cannot find the option in the desktop app, open the official redemption URL in a browser. The same browser method is the safest route on a phone or tablet. Avoid unofficial “activation” pages.

How to use the redeemed Steam Wallet balance
- Browse the Steam Store and add an eligible game, software title, hardware item, or other purchase to your cart.
- Proceed to checkout.
- Choose Steam Wallet as the payment method.
- If the Wallet balance is insufficient, pay the remaining amount with another available method.
- Complete checkout, then confirm the order in your purchase history or Library.
A redemption only creates Wallet credit; it does not automatically purchase a particular game. Steam describes eligible uses on its Gift Cards page.
How official digital Steam Gift Cards work
Official digital cards are purchased through Steam’s digital gift-card service and sent to another Steam user. The recipient accepts the gift from the Steam notification. This is different from receiving a Wallet Code from a retailer or an unrelated third-party seller. The recipient needs a Steam account, and purchase amounts, eligibility, and availability can depend on account and region.
What to do when a code fails

For a persistent code problem, Steam asks customers to contact Support with a clear image of the entire back of the Wallet Code and the matching retail receipt: Steam Wallet and gift-card support. If a completed wallet-funding transaction still is not visible after more than two hours, Steam recommends restarting the client and contacting Support.

Can a Steam card bought in another country work?
Do not assume that every card works in every country. Steam’s redemption page says a Wallet Code is converted into the currency of the account’s Wallet at redemption, while Steam Support also documents currency-based limitations intended to reduce scams. A code issued in an incompatible currency may be rejected. The account’s store country and Wallet currency matter, and a gift card cannot legitimately change your Steam country or bypass regional pricing.
Steam says disguising your location with a proxy or VPN violates its Terms of Service and may lead to account restrictions: region and location restrictions.
Transfers, refunds, and the wrong account
Check the account name before redeeming. Steam Wallet funds cannot be transferred or gifted to another Steam account after they are added. If you redeem on the wrong account, Support cannot be assumed to move the balance.

Steam says Wallet funds purchased on Steam may be eligible for a refund when requested within 14 days and still unused. That condition should not be extended automatically to a physical retail card or to funds already spent. Purchases made with the balance follow Steam’s normal purchase-refund rules: Steam Wallet and gift-card support.
Steam gift-card scams to avoid
Are physical Steam Gift Cards still sold?
On August 18, 2026, Valve said it is ending the retail physical Steam Gift Card program. Existing cards remain redeemable subject to local law, but retailers will not restock them and Valve expects retail stock to be exhausted by the end of 2026. Steam’s digital gift-card service continues. Availability at any particular retailer can end earlier or later.
Valve cites gift-card scams among the reasons for the change. The safest ongoing options are Steam’s official digital cards or, while available, a card from an authorized local retailer: authorized retailer information.

Can I redeem a Steam card without an account?
No. Sign in to an existing Steam account; Steam’s gifting service also directs people without an account to create one first.
Can I redeem a Steam Gift Card on a phone?
Yes. Open https://store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode in a mobile browser, sign in, and complete the same code-entry process.
Can I use the balance on Steam Deck?
Steam Wallet credit belongs to your Steam account, so it can be applied to eligible Steam purchases made through that account, including purchases made while using Steam Deck.

Is a Steam Wallet Code the same as a game key?
No. A Wallet Code adds general Steam Wallet funds; a game key activates a specific product through Steam’s product-key flow.
What if I entered the code on the wrong account?
Steam says Wallet funds cannot be transferred or gifted to another account. Contact Support, but do not assume a transfer will be possible.
Do Steam Gift Cards expire or provide cash back?
The reviewed Steam sources do not establish one universal expiration or cash-refund rule. Check the card terms, local law, and retailer policy.
