Apple’s Games app is a free, preinstalled hub in iOS 26 for launching games, finding new ones, viewing updates and events, and using supported Game Center features. You do not need an Apple Arcade subscription to use it.
It brings discovery, your downloaded-game history, achievements, leaderboards, challenges, friends and multiplayer activity into one place. It does not add multiplayer, achievements or cross-game saves to titles that do not support those features.
What is Apple’s Games app?
Games is Apple’s central gaming destination on iPhone, iPad and Mac running the relevant operating-system generation. Apple says it is included with iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26 or later. The app combines four services that remain distinct:
- Games: the user-facing hub, launcher and discovery surface.
- Game Center: the account-backed system for achievements, leaderboards, friends and supported challenges.
- App Store: where ordinary games are downloaded or purchased.
- Apple Arcade: an optional subscription catalog shown in its own Games tab.
Games therefore centralizes much of the visible Game Center experience rather than simply eliminating Game Center. Account and privacy controls still use Game Center settings.

Check Apple’s launch compatibility list and current iOS 26 list for your model.
The five main areas of Games
Home
Home is a “what is happening in my games?” view rather than a plain app grid. It can show updates from games you play, in-game events, new releases, editorial collections, personalized recommendations and games your friends are playing. Supported Game Center activity—including achievements, leaderboard changes, challenges and multiplayer activity—can also appear here. What you see depends on your games, account, friends’ activity-sharing choices and region. Apple demonstrates the Home experience in its WWDC25 Games app session.
Arcade
Arcade is the subscription section. Subscribers can browse Apple Arcade releases, updates and events, launch games, view achievements and compare supported scores. Apple’s iOS 26 feature guide describes the service as having more than 200 games without ads or in-app purchases; the catalog and availability can change by country or region. See Apple Arcade for current service details.
Play Together
Play Together is the social area for inviting friends, viewing active challenges, finding friends who play the same game and joining compatible multiplayer activities. It is a social layer around games that implement the relevant Game Center features, not a universal matchmaking service for every App Store title. Apple’s interface walkthrough begins at Play Together.

Library
Library is broader than a list of apps currently installed. Apple describes it as a place for games downloaded to the device and games previously downloaded through your Apple Account, including App Store and Apple Arcade titles. Access can still be affected by delistings, compatibility, subscription status, platform and regional availability.
Use the documented filters to narrow the collection:
- On This iPhone
- Apple Arcade
- Friends Playing
- Controller Support
- Support Challenge
- Categories
You can launch games, revisit a past download and open achievement or leaderboard information from supported titles. Apple documents these filters in its iPhone User Guide.
Search
Search is the quickest route when you already know a game’s name. Home, Arcade and editorial collections are discovery-oriented; Search helps you find games surfaced through Apple’s services and catalogs. It should not be treated as a directory of every game on every platform or storefront.

What you can do in Games
Launch and rediscover games
Open an installed game from Library, or find a title associated with your Apple Account and redownload it when it remains available. A previous download is not a guarantee of permanent access: a game may have been removed, become incompatible or be unavailable in your current region.
Find new games
Recommendations can come from Apple’s editors, your activity, new releases, Apple Arcade, friends’ activity and game pages. Apple’s App Store editorial coverage explains how recommendations and friend challenges can appear in Games at its Games app feature. A recommendation does not guarantee that a game is free, compatible with your iPhone or offered in every region.
Track achievements and leaderboard scores
For a Game Center-enabled game, Games can show achievement progress, earned achievements, leaderboard standings and whether friends have passed your score. You may be able to return to or redownload the associated game from that activity. These records are not automatic for every title: the developer must implement Game Center achievements or leaderboards.
Challenge friends
Challenges let friends compete on a game-defined target, such as the highest score, fastest time or—in some games—the lowest score. Apple describes live score tracking, declaring a winner and rematches. The challenge picker only offers compatible games, as shown in Apple’s challenge demonstration. A challenge is not necessarily a real-time multiplayer match.

Find multiplayer activity
Games can expose multiplayer activity already supported by a title, but it does not supply universal matchmaking. A game may still require its own account, subscription, internet connection or matchmaking system.
Filter for controller-compatible games
The Controller Support filter helps identify games that advertise physical-controller support. The iPhone, the controller and the individual game must all be compatible; connecting a controller does not make touch-only games playable with physical controls. iOS 26 also makes pairing DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers over USB-C easier and supports pairing those controllers with multiple Apple devices for switching. Apple’s feature guide provides the controller details.

- Only You
This controls visibility of activity such as achievement progress, leaderboard updates and recently played games. Apple separately notes that your Game Center nickname, avatar and scores are visible to Game Center users, so Activity Sharing is not a promise that every identity element becomes private.
Do you need Apple Arcade?
No. Games, its Library, ordinary App Store discovery and supported Game Center features work without an Arcade subscription. Apple Arcade is required only for access to its subscription catalog. Games bought or downloaded through the App Store remain separate purchases or downloads, while Arcade access depends on an active subscription and catalog availability.
Why a game may not show challenges or achievements
- The developer has not added the relevant Game Center integration.
- The game supports achievements but not challenges, or supports leaderboards but not achievements.
- The installed version, platform or region differs from the compatible version.
- Your friends have not enabled activity visibility.
- The game uses its own account and social system instead of Game Center.
Games exposes capabilities that exist; it does not retrofit them onto unsupported titles.
What to do if a game, achievement or save is missing
- Install the latest compatible iOS update.
- Confirm you use the same Apple Account in iCloud, Game Center and the App Store.
- Check whether the game supports Game Center or iCloud synchronization.
- Verify that the game is still available on your platform and in your region.
- Close and reopen Games, then relaunch the game.
- Before deleting the game, confirm that its save data is synced or backed up.
Apple says supported games can use iCloud and Game Center to keep progress, high scores and saves current across Apple devices. Synchronization is game- and developer-dependent, as explained in Apple’s save-data support article.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGames app versus Game Overlay
Game Overlay is a related but separate iOS 26 gaming feature. It lets you access settings, connect with friends and check updates without leaving a game. It should not be confused with the Games app, and it does not mean the Games hub automatically floats over every title. Apple includes both features in its iOS 26 feature summary.
Is the Games app worth using?
Games is most useful if you play several titles, subscribe to Apple Arcade, follow achievements or leaderboards, have friends on Apple devices, move between iPhone, iPad and Mac, or want to identify controller-compatible games. It gives those activities one consistent starting point.
Its benefit is smaller if you play one or two games, launch everything from the Home Screen, avoid Game Center, use each game’s independent account system, or mostly play on consoles, PC or services outside Apple’s ecosystem. In those cases, Games is an optional convenience rather than a replacement for your existing launcher or social tools.
