Short answer: You can officially update or repair the current PC/Mac installation of The Sims 4, and you can sometimes delay automatic downloads. EA does not provide a normal way to select any historical patch and install it. Legacy Edition was a hardware-compatibility release, not a general rollback option, and EA says it has been unavailable for new PC and Mac installations since December 12, 2022.
This guide covers the EA app and Steam editions. Console versions use different update systems and these PC/Mac procedures do not apply.

First, identify what “change version” means

Check your installed Sims 4 version
- Launch The Sims 4.
- Wait for the main menu to load.
- Read the complete version number in the lower-left corner.
- Record it before updating, repairing, or changing Mods.
- Compare the full number with the compatibility information from the mod creator or support article, not merely the first digits.
EA troubleshooting guidance identifies the lower-left main-menu number as the place to check the installed build: EA’s Sims 4 PC troubleshooting guide. Patch numbers change, so a page that lists a “current” number can become stale.
How to update through the EA app
- Open the EA app and sign in.
- Open Library and select The Sims 4.
- Choose the game’s update option if one is shown.
- Allow the download and installation to finish before launching.
- Open the game and confirm the version number on the main menu.
EA’s current app documentation explains game updating and update controls: EA app download, installation and update help. Updating the EA app itself is separate from updating Sims 4; an updated launcher does not necessarily mean the game files have changed.

How to update or repair the Steam edition
Update controls
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Open The Sims 4 game page, then choose Manage → Properties.
- Open Updates and select the update behavior you want.
- Let Steam complete any download, then launch Sims 4 and check the lower-left version number.
Steam documents the per-game option Only update this game when I launch it at Steam Support’s update settings page.
Verify damaged or incomplete files
- In Steam, open The Sims 4’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace missing or damaged files, then relaunch the game.
Verification restores the files Steam considers current. It is a repair operation, not a downgrade, so it can make the installation newer rather than older. EA’s troubleshooting guidance describes this route for the Steam edition: EA’s Sims 4 PC troubleshooting guide.
Can you downgrade Sims 4 to an arbitrary old patch?
Not through a normal, supported EA app or Steam feature. EA forum guidance states that players cannot “downpatch,” and explains that the launchers provide the fully updated game rather than a library of historical builds. Do not treat third-party patch archives, modified executables, piracy or unofficial “downpatchers” as equivalent to official support. Their file integrity, legality, malware exposure, account behavior, pack compatibility and save safety cannot be guaranteed here.
Why a rollback is especially risky
- A historical base-game build may not recognize or correctly load packs released after it.
- Even packs you already own can depend on later base-game updates.
- A save opened and saved in a newer build may contain worlds, objects, traits or systems unavailable in an older build.
- Changing an executable alone does not make every pack and save backward-compatible.
If you already possess a legitimate pre-update backup, work on a copy and keep the original untouched. Restoring an older backup is safer than repeatedly opening the only current save in incompatible installations, but compatibility is still not guaranteed.
How to delay automatic updates—and what that cannot do
EA app
EA’s settings include game-update controls. The general paths are PC: top-left menu → Application settings → Download → Updates and Mac: EA app menu → Settings → Download → Updates. Turning off automatic updates may stop background downloading, but it does not create an archive of old builds. The launcher or game may still require an update before launch, and settings can change after an app reinstall, account change or interface update.
Steam
Steam’s Only update this game when I launch it setting delays normal updating. It may still update when you start the game, so it is a scheduling preference rather than a permanent freeze or version selector.
Back up before any update, repair or Mod change
Before changing files, copy your Sims 4 user data to a separate location. On Windows, the usual folder is DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4; on macOS it is the corresponding Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 folder.

Do not overwrite your only backup with a later, potentially damaged save. EA’s Sims 4 support hub provides current backup and reset guidance: EA Sims 4 support. Test a copied save instead of experimenting with the sole original.

EA warns that updates can disable Mods and Custom Content because previously compatible files may cause problems. Its recommended process is described at EA’s Mods and Sims 4 game-updates guide.
- Move the
Modsfolder out temporarily, or launch with Mods disabled. - Keep a backup before deleting or replacing script Mods.
- Start the game in a clean state and test a disposable or copied save.
- Check each creator’s official page for compatibility information.
- Reintroduce files in small batches.
- If the problem returns, remove the last batch and isolate the offending file.
This workflow is usually safer than attempting an unsupported downgrade. A particular Mod’s creator must determine whether it works with a particular patch; an update can create compatibility problems without every Mod being affected.

Legacy Edition was not a normal downgrade
Legacy Edition existed for unsupported hardware, including 32-bit Windows systems and non-Metal Macs. EA says it has not been available on PC or Mac since December 12, 2022: EA’s Legacy Edition help page.
It was a frozen compatibility edition with major limitations, not a menu of historical patches. EA’s historical support information says it did not receive new content or bug fixes, disabled features including the Gallery and social integrations, and supported only content released through its cutoff period: EA’s supported-systems discussion.
Modern 64-bit Windows players should use the standard supported version. Mac players need a Metal-compatible system or another supported device. Do not search the EA app for a Legacy download unless EA visibly offers it for your account and hardware; the current EA page says it is unavailable. EA also documents transferring saves from a Legacy installation to the standard version by copying the Legacy folder into the corresponding Documents/Electronic Arts location and renaming it as instructed. Legacy-era Mods may not work with the current full version.
Recovery and troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm whether the installation belongs to the EA app or Steam.
- Record the complete number shown at the lower-left of the main menu.
- Restart the launcher and check that it is signed into the account that owns the game.
- Repair through the EA app, or verify files through Steam.
- Test with Mods and Custom Content removed or disabled.
- Check storage space, permissions, antivirus quarantine and network connectivity.
- If Steam shows a stale or unexpected number, configuration overrides or stale files are possible troubleshooting causes; community reports do not establish one universal cause. See this EA forum troubleshooting report.
- Contact EA Support when ownership, account or launcher errors remain after file repair.
Choose the safe path for your goal

The Bottom Line
Update or repair Sims 4 through the EA app or Steam, back up your user data first, and treat Mods as the usual post-patch compatibility issue. You can delay updates to a limited extent, but there is no standard supported way to install any historical patch you choose. Legacy Edition is unavailable and was never a general downgrade route.
