ASUS’s ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W is now available in the United States, but it is not a brand-new August 2026 launch. ASUS unveiled it at Gamescom on August 19, 2025, then announced availability on November 6, 2025. Current stock and pricing vary by seller.
The 26.5-inch monitor combines 2560×1440 at 540Hz with a separate 1280×720 at 720Hz mode. ASUS also claims its fourth-generation WOLED (Tandem OLED) panel delivers 15% higher peak brightness, 25% greater color volume and a 60% longer OLED lifespan than previous-generation WOLED panels. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not universal independent test results.

720Hz is a 720p mode, not 1440p
The monitor’s headline feature is a hotkey-controlled dual mode, documented in ASUS’s manual:
| Mode | Resolution | Refresh rate | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| QHD | 2560×1440 | 540Hz | Competitive gaming while retaining detailed images |
| HD | 1280×720 | 720Hz | Specialist esports play prioritizing frame time over sharpness |
Switching to 720Hz cuts the vertical resolution from 1,440 pixels to 720. It is therefore not a conventional 1440p 720Hz monitor. The 720Hz setting is most useful in games such as Counter-Strike 2, Valorant or Overwatch 2 when a system can sustain extremely high frame rates and the player deliberately accepts a softer, lower-detail image.

How much faster is 720Hz?
A 540Hz refresh takes about 1.85 milliseconds; 720Hz takes about 1.39 milliseconds. The difference is approximately 0.46ms per refresh. That is measurable, but it is a small gain on top of an already extreme refresh rate. The monitor cannot create those frames: the game engine, CPU, GPU, settings and connection must all deliver them.
For most owners, 540Hz QHD is the practical default. It preserves substantially more image detail, works better for ordinary desktop use and remains far beyond the refresh rate of mainstream gaming displays. Total input-to-photon latency also includes input devices, game processing and rendering; ASUS’s 0.02ms gray-to-gray figure is only a panel response-time specification.

What Tandem OLED changes
Tandem OLED stacks light-emitting layers to improve efficiency and panel performance. ASUS says, compared with previous-generation WOLED panels, this design provides:
- 15% higher peak brightness. This refers to peak output, not a promise of 15% higher brightness in every scene. HDR results vary with window size, picture mode, firmware and panel protection behavior.
- 25% larger color volume. That could help the panel retain more saturation at higher luminance, but it does not establish superiority over every QD-OLED display.
- 60% longer OLED lifespan. This is a comparative panel-technology claim, not a guaranteed service life, a 60% longer warranty or immunity from burn-in.
The monitor carries VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black certification. Certification establishes a performance class; it does not predict brightness in every game or movie scene.

Burn-in protection and ownership obligations
OLED Care Pro includes maintenance functions such as pixel cleaning, pixel shifting, logo brightness adjustment and screen-saver behavior. The Neo Proximity Sensor can detect when nobody is in front of the display and help reduce static-image exposure. These features reduce risk but do not make the panel burn-in-proof.
Retail materials advertise three-year coverage, but warranty terms, burn-in coverage and exclusions depend on country, seller and exact purchase channel. Confirm those terms before buying, especially when a marketplace seller is involved. Keep OLED maintenance enabled unless you understand the trade-off.
Best Value
- High-Performance Display Specifications: 26.5-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) QD-OLED gaming monitor with 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time
- Advanced QD-OLED Technology: Latest 4th-gen QD-OLED technology delivers sharper imagery and crystal-clear text, a longer lifespan over previous-gen OLEDs
- Enhanced Viewing Comfort: OLED Anti-Flicker 2.0 technology includes a new luminance compensation algorithm that reduces flicker by 20% compared to previous-gen panels, ensuring comfortable viewing
- Intelligent Burn-In Protection: New ASUS OLED Care Pro functions with Neo Proximity Sensor that precisely detects when the user is away, switching to a black screen to reduce the risk of burn-in
- Comprehensive Connectivity Options: Extensive connectivity options include DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20 with full 80Gbps bandwidth, USB-C (90W PD), HDMI 2.1, and a tripod socket
Hardware needed to use either mode
- Connect the monitor with a suitable high-bandwidth DisplayPort 2.1 cable for the highest-rate configurations; use the supplied cable where appropriate.
- In Windows display settings and the game, select 2560×1440 at 540Hz or 1280×720 at 720Hz.
- Use a CPU, GPU and game settings capable of producing hundreds of frames per second. Competitive settings that reduce visual load are usually necessary for 720Hz.
- Check actual frame rates in your main games rather than assuming a particular GPU name guarantees a useful result.
If the system spends most of its time below 360fps, paying for this monitor’s maximum modes is unlikely to deliver the intended benefit.
Glossy OLED: excellent in the right room
The TrueBlack Glossy coating can provide crisp perceived detail, strong contrast and less haze than many matte finishes. It also reflects windows, lamps and ceiling lights more clearly. A controlled, dim room favors glossy OLED; a bright room with uncontrolled reflections may make a matte display more comfortable.
Drawbacks and reported issues
- The price is high compared with 480Hz–500Hz OLED alternatives and high-refresh LCD esports monitors.
- 720Hz requires a 720p image, while 540Hz retains QHD.
- Benefits above 360Hz or 500Hz have diminishing practical returns for many players.
- OLED remains a less carefree choice for static desktop work than LCD.
- QHD OLED text rendering may not satisfy buyers who spend most of the day reading documents.
- Some owners have posted anecdotal reports of gray-band or dirty-screen effects and concerns about 720Hz image quality, including discussions on this thread, this report and this discussion. These reports are not controlled testing and do not prove a universal defect.
Who should buy the PG27AQWP-W?
Buy it if
- You compete seriously in very high-frame-rate shooters or esports titles.
- Your system can feed 540Hz at QHD and, when desired, 720Hz at 720p.
- You want OLED contrast and near-instantaneous pixel response in a glossy display.
- You specifically value having both a sharp 540Hz mode and a specialist 720Hz option.
- You can control room reflections and accept OLED maintenance.
Skip it if
- You mainly play cinematic single-player games or want 4K resolution.
- Your PC normally produces only 240–360fps.
- You need a larger screen, the lowest possible price or carefree static-desktop use.
- You expect 720Hz to be as sharp as 1440p.
- You are highly sensitive to reflections or concerned about OLED uniformity.
Alternatives that may make more sense
ASUS’s ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDP targets buyers who want very high-refresh 1440p OLED gaming without paying specifically for the 720Hz mode. The ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG offers Tandem OLED positioning at a lower refresh-rate tier. High-refresh LCD esports displays can cost less, handle static desktop content more comfortably and avoid permanent OLED image-retention concerns, though they do not provide OLED’s black levels and pixel response.
Verdict
The PG27AQWP-W is a specialist performance monitor, not a universal best buy. Its meaningful proposition is 2560×1440 at 540Hz with the option to switch to 1280×720 at 720Hz. Tandem OLED’s brightness, color-volume and lifespan figures are promising ASUS claims, but they should not be read as guaranteed results or burn-in insurance. At roughly $1,099.99 in the U.S. listing checked, it makes sense primarily for competitive players with hardware fast enough to exploit both modes and a room suitable for glossy OLED.
