As the game’s explainer puts it, “It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level.” The puzzle is playable free on the NYT Games site.

Answers for NYT Connections #588

Color Category Words
Yellow FUND KITTY, POOL, POT, PURSE
Green COURT FILING ACTION, CASE, CLAIM, SUIT
Blue LANDFORMS BASIN, BLUFF, CAPE, PLAIN
Purple THEY HAVE RAYS AQUARIUM, GEOMETRY, SUN, TAMPA BAY

Why each group works

Yellow: Fund

A kitty, pool, pot or purse can mean a collected amount of money. “Kitty” and “pot” are especially common in games or group collections, while “pool” and “purse” describe a shared or available fund.

Green: Court filing

An action, case, claim or suit can refer to a legal proceeding or filing. The wording of the green hint—“You’ve been served”—points toward litigation.

Blue: Landforms

A basin, bluff, cape and plain are geographic landforms. This is the most literal category in the puzzle, matching the “Landscape” hint.

Purple: They have rays

This group uses four different meanings or references for rays: an aquarium can contain stingrays or other rays; a ray is a concept studied in geometry; the sun emits rays; and Tampa Bay refers to the Tampa Bay Rays sports team. That mix of literal, scientific and proper-name meanings makes purple the wordplay-heavy group.

Puzzle difficulty

The guide’s assessment for January 19’s puzzle was Easy, and its reported result was a Perfect score. The first three sets rely on familiar meanings; the purple set is the main stretch because “rays” connects an animal display, a geometry term, sunlight and a team name.
