Spoiler warning: NYT Connections #547, published December 9, 2024, groups its 16 words into deliberation terms, fire-starting tools, laboratory items and phrases that follow “X.” Gentle hints come first, followed by the complete answers and a step-by-step solve.

Hints for Connections #547

Connections uses four color-coded difficulty levels: yellow is generally easiest, blue and green are intermediate, and purple usually relies on wordplay. You can make up to four mistakes before the puzzle ends.

Yellow hint

Mull it over; these words describe careful thought or examination.

Green hint

It is going to burn. Look for several ways to start a fire.

These belong in a laboratory while viewing a biological sample.

Purple hint

The truth is out there—and each answer can follow the same very short prefix.

The 16-word grid

The puzzle presents these words:

RAY, FACTOR, LIGHTER, STAIN, MICROSCOPE, GAMES, CONSIDERATION, MAGNIFYING GLASS, REFLECTION, MATCHES, SLIDE, THOUGHT, FLINT, FILES, SCRUTINY, SPECIMEN.

Complete answers for December 9

Color Category Words Why they connect
Yellow DELIBERATION CONSIDERATION; REFLECTION; SCRUTINY; THOUGHT Each word refers to careful thinking, weighing or examining something.
Green USED IN STARTING A FIRE FLINT; LIGHTER; MAGNIFYING GLASS; MATCHES All four can be used to ignite material: a flint makes sparks, a lighter and matches provide flame, and a magnifying glass focuses sunlight.
Blue USED TO VIEW A BIOLOGICAL SAMPLE MICROSCOPE; SLIDE; SPECIMEN; STAIN A microscope views the prepared sample; the specimen is placed on a slide, and stain can increase contrast so structures are easier to see.
Purple WORDS AFTER “X” FACTOR; FILES; GAMES; RAY The familiar phrases are X factor, X-Files, X Games and X-ray.

How to solve the puzzle

1. Start with the concrete fire group

FLINT, LIGHTER, MAGNIFYING GLASS and MATCHES share a practical use rather than merely a broad meaning. That makes the set the most immediately testable: each can start a fire under the right conditions.

2. Assemble the laboratory set

MICROSCOPE, SLIDE, SPECIMEN and STAIN form a complete viewing process. The microscope is the instrument, the slide is the prepared surface, the specimen is the biological material and the stain helps reveal features.

3. Remove the deliberation words

CONSIDERATION, REFLECTION, SCRUTINY and THOUGHT all point to deliberate mental effort or close examination. Their shared meaning separates them from the more physical laboratory terms.

4. Use the leftover words to spot the purple wordplay

FACTOR, FILES, GAMES and RAY remain. Putting “X” before each creates well-known names or terms: X factor, X-Files, X Games and X-ray. This is the wordplay-heavy purple connection.
