“Five times bigger” refers to storage, not five-times-higher hardware requirements or a confirmed five-times-larger map. As of August 18, 2026, Grounded 2 lists 40 GB of available PC space, compared with the original Grounded’s 8 GB in the comparison reported by Windows Central. That is 32 GB more capacity, or a 400% increase over the original requirement.
The sequel still requires 16 GB of RAM at both minimum and recommended settings. Its minimum GPU tier is relatively accessible, but the recommended target rises to an RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6800 XT. The game launched on PC in Early Access on July 29, 2025 and remained unfinished when the PlayStation 5 version and Into the Abyss update arrived on August 11, 2026.
What the five-times figure actually measures

The arithmetic comes from the storage figures, not from RAM, GPU power or a measured map-size comparison. Obsidian’s current requirements use the wording “40 GB available space,” so this should not be read as a guarantee that every installation will occupy exactly 40 GB. Download data, temporary installation files, updates, shader caches and platform overhead can change the space needed.
Storage growth can result from additional environments, textures, audio, creatures, animations, items, engine changes, duplicated platform assets and content added during development. The published specifications do not identify how much each factor contributes.

These specifications come from Obsidian’s official FAQ and the Steam listing. Obsidian’s separate performance-help page contains inconsistent GPU labeling, so the FAQ and current store listing are the safer references.
What those specifications mean for performance
Meeting minimum is not the same as running at high settings
A system with an i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1070, RX 5700 or Arc A580 meets the published minimum. That indicates technical eligibility, not a promise of a particular resolution, graphics preset or frame rate. The official list does not specify a 1080p or 60-fps target, nor does it say whether upscaling is assumed.

The recommended GPU is a substantial step up
The RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT recommendation is considerably more demanding than the minimum GPU tier. Coverage describing the minimum as roughly decade-old hardware should therefore be read as a statement about launchability, not an assurance of smooth high-refresh-rate play. CPU performance, drivers, thermals, resolution and future updates will also affect results.
Check these edge cases before installing
- Less than 16 GB of RAM: below the official minimum.
- Below the GTX 1070/RX 5700/Arc A580 class: below the listed minimum GPU tier.
- Laptop hardware: mobile GPU names can hide large power and performance differences; compare the specific laptop rather than the desktop label alone.
- Integrated graphics: no integrated GPU is listed as supported.
- Older Intel processors: the minimum is specifically an i5-8400, not any generic quad-core chip.
- Windows: the requirement is updated Windows 10 or Windows 11, not an older operating system.
Does 40 GB mean the map is five times larger?
No. Install size and world area measure different things. The Steam description calls the sequel’s world “much larger,” but the five-times headline is explicitly the 40-GB-versus-8-GB storage comparison.

Development coverage has used different descriptions for Brookhollow Park. GamesRadar+ reported a development expectation of roughly three times the original backyard, while later Windows Central coverage described a five-times goal. Those are development-stage statements, not a final measured comparison. Because the game remains in Early Access/Game Preview, its content and map can change.
How much free space should you leave?
Keep more than 40 GB free before starting an installation. Steam or the Xbox app may need temporary working space, and later patches can require additional room. This matters most on 256 GB-or-smaller SSDs, older laptops and Windows gaming handhelds. An SSD is sensible for loading and asset streaming, but Obsidian’s published requirement does not explicitly mandate one.

A 40 GB requirement alone is not an unusually extreme demand for a modern survival or open-world game. It is a capacity issue, not evidence that every player needs a new SSD. If your drive already has adequate headroom, no storage upgrade is necessary.

Obsidian’s FAQ says PC and Xbox support cross-play and cross-progression. Steam players must link a Microsoft account to use cross-platform features. Local/offline co-op is not supported, and the game is not included with Game Pass Core or Game Pass Standard.

Current release status
Grounded 2 entered Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 29, 2025. The August 11, 2026 announcement for the PlayStation 5 release still described Xbox and PC as Game Preview/Early Access. The same announcement lists PS5 availability, ROG Xbox Ally handheld support, PC Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass Ultimate. Early Access means requirements, optimization and content may change before version 1.0; Steam also warns that the game is incomplete and subject to further changes.
