The dependable way to blacksmith in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is to complete Radovan’s tutorial, heat the whole workpiece evenly, hammer while it is bright yellow or straw-colored, reheat whenever it cools, then temper and quench it. Craftsmanship improves through forging, sharpening, repairs and clothing maintenance, while a few perks make durable, well-maintained weapons substantially more effective.
Where to learn blacksmithing
After the prologue, meet Radovan in Troskowitz and follow him to Tachov during the Wedding Crashers period. The resulting The Blacksmith’s Son quest is the game’s early blacksmithing tutorial and gives you a hunting-sword forging objective. Its rewards include scrap metal, steel, fastening material and starter schematics, giving you both the materials and recipes needed to begin.

Complete this quest before trying to infer a full system from random forge attempts. It teaches the furnace, anvil, hammering, tempering and quenching in the intended order.
The reliable forge loop
-
Learn the design and check materials
Consume or learn the desired design, then inspect its resource requirements. Start at an anvil. Patch 1.5 allows material selection from your shared stash or horse inventory, so you no longer need to carry every component to the forge.

-
Heat the entire workpiece
Move the workpiece through the furnace so every section heats evenly. Color is your practical guide: red and orange are cooler, while bright yellow or straw-colored metal is the workable range described by the tutorial. Keep the bellows input steady and stop when the color and blacksmith’s cue indicate readiness. Excessive heating can damage the piece.
-
Hammer with a consistent rhythm
Strike systematically across the workpiece rather than repeatedly hitting one spot. Sparks indicate a successful shaping strike. Consistent timing reduces unnecessary trips back to the furnace, but do not treat a particular community pattern as a guaranteed rule.
-
Reheat as soon as it cools
A cooling blade is not a failed attempt. Return it to the furnace whenever the color drops out of the workable range, then resume hammering. Trying to force cold metal produces inefficient, unreliable work.
-
Temper and quench
Once the shape is complete, move the item to the tempering stage and then trigger the quench at the water barrel. The game advances these stages automatically after the appropriate input, but you must initiate each move.

How to judge hammering timing
Watch the metal and the result of each blow rather than counting a fixed number of strikes. A spark-producing strike is the useful visual feedback that the current hit is shaping the item. Sweep methodically along a long blade and maintain a repeatable tempo.
Online guides sometimes recommend patterns such as alternating two points on a blade. Those patterns are community observations, not a documented universal rule, and their reliability can change with patches or hidden mechanics. Use them as experiments only; the color cue, sparks and systematic coverage are the dependable signals.

Why a blade keeps cooling
- The workpiece was not heated evenly: sections left outside the furnace cool while another section is worked. Move the whole piece through the heat and check all areas.
- You are waiting too long between strikes: slower inputs allow the metal to leave the workable color range. Use a steady rhythm and reheat promptly.
- You are trying to finish cold metal: stop hammering when the color falls toward red or dark metal, return to the furnace and continue only after reheating.
- The forge sequence was interrupted: after shaping, deliberately trigger tempering and then quenching instead of assuming the game will complete both steps without input.
Raising Craftsmanship quickly and usefully
Craftsmanship is not gained only from making a new sword. The following activities all contribute:
- Forge weapons and other items at the anvil.
- Sharpen weapons on the grindstone.
- Repair armor with repair kits.
- Wash and maintain clothing.
The fastest practical routine depends on what materials and damaged equipment you already have. Forging gives direct practice but consumes components; sharpening, kit repairs and clothing maintenance can add progress while you are already preparing for travel or combat. Do not waste valuable materials solely to chase experience when a repair or sharpening job is available.
Craftsmanship perks that matter for weapons
| Perk | Unlock | Effect | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Razor-Sharp | Craftsmanship level 6 | 10% more slashing damage after sharpening a weapon to at least 98% condition, as long as its condition remains above 75%. | Sharpen before an important fight, then avoid letting the weapon’s condition fall to 75% or lower. |
| Hardened Steel | Craftsmanship level 10 | Forged weapons take damage 20% more slowly. | Prioritize it if you rely on a forged weapon for frequent combat and want fewer durability losses. |
| Other listed Craftsmanship perks | Varies | Options include lower repair costs, slower gear damage, reduced boot stamina cost and improved durability for forged weapons. | Choose according to whether your bottleneck is money, equipment wear, travel stamina or weapon longevity. |
Razor-Sharp is conditional, not a permanent damage increase: the weapon must first reach at least 98% condition on the grindstone and then stay above 75%. Hardened Steel affects the rate at which forged weapons take damage, not the damage they deal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Patch 1.5 changes to the workflow
Patch 1.5 added material selection from the shared stash and horse inventory, reducing the need to move components manually before a craft. It also fixed an issue where a sharpening option could be missing on low graphics settings. If either behavior differs in your game, check that you are running the current version; later updates may modify the interface or mechanics again.
Which blacksmithing approach should you use?
| Approach | Reliability across patches | Skill and time | Material cost | Quality outcome | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radovan’s tutorial loop | Highest starting reliability | Low skill; teaches the complete sequence | Starter materials supplied by the quest | Consistent when heat and hammering cues are followed | Documented quest and tutorial behavior |
| Repeatable heat-and-spark routine | Generally reliable, subject to updates | Moderate practice; reheats add time | Uses the recipe’s required components | Improves with even heating and fewer wasted strikes | Supported by the in-game cues |
| Fixed community strike patterns | Uncertain | Can be quick if it works, but requires memorization | No special saving is established | Not guaranteed to improve quality | Community inference; hidden mechanics and patch effects are uncertain |
For dependable results, use the tutorial’s visual cues and the repeatable heat-and-spark routine. Treat any fixed strike sequence as optional experimentation rather than an official optimization.
Legacy of the Forge: more smithing content
The Legacy of the Forge expansion is the main addition for players who want blacksmithing to become a larger part of the game. It adds recipes, assistants, a customizable forge and homestead, Blacksmith Prestige, and customer-focused forging activities. Those systems expand the career and management side of smithing beyond the base game’s anvil loop.

Quick Recap
A practical pre-craft checklist
- Have you learned or consumed the correct design?
- Are all required materials available in your inventory, shared stash or horse inventory?
- Is the entire workpiece heated evenly?
- Is the metal bright yellow or straw-colored rather than red, orange or dark?
- Are you striking methodically and watching for sparks?
- Have you reheated instead of continuing on cooling metal?
- Did you trigger tempering and then quenching?
- If using Razor-Sharp, did the weapon reach 98% condition and remain above 75% afterward?
