Pokémon GO AR usually fails for one of four reasons: camera access is blocked, the phone cannot support that particular AR feature, Android’s ARCore service is missing or incompatible, or the app’s local data is malfunctioning. Start by checking permissions and compatibility, then work through the seven fixes below. Your Pokémon and other progress are tied to your online account, but confirm your sign-in method before clearing app data or reinstalling.
Identify the AR problem first
| Symptom | Most likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Black camera screen | Camera permission, a camera conflict, an app bug, or corrupted cache |
| “Camera access needed” | Pokémon GO lacks camera permission or a system privacy control is blocking it |
| AR toggle missing | Device or feature incompatibility, unavailable ARCore, or a temporary app issue |
| Pokémon will not appear on the floor | Poor lighting, no detectable flat surface, fast movement, or an AR tracking failure |
| AR freezes or crashes | Outdated software, corrupted data, insufficient resources, or a compatibility problem |
| Buddy AR fails while encounters work | Buddy AR can have different requirements or can be disabled independently |
| GO Snapshot uses a static background | The device does not meet that feature’s AR requirements or AR is disabled |
For environment tracking, Niantic recommends adequate light, an open flat surface and slow camera movement: Catching Pokémon in AR mode.

Before you start
- Note whether you use an iPhone or Android, the exact model, OS version and Pokémon GO version.
- Test the phone’s normal Camera app. If it is also black, investigate a system privacy setting or hardware problem first.
- Record whether the failure affects wild encounters, Buddy AR, GO Snapshot or every AR function.
Fix 1: Allow Pokémon GO to use the camera
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Camera.
- Turn on Pokémon GO.
- Reopen the game and start an AR encounter.
If the app is not listed, launch an AR feature to trigger the request again. If access is locked, check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Apple explains that an AR session cannot start after camera permission is denied: Apple camera and location privacy settings and ARKit camera authorization.
Android
- Open Settings and choose Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select Pokémon GO, then Permissions.
- Allow Camera; allow location access while using the app if requested.
- Check Quick Settings or Privacy controls for a system-wide Camera access switch and turn it on.
Manufacturer labels vary, but the reliable route is Pokémon GO’s app-permission page.

Fix 2: Check compatibility for the exact AR feature
Running Pokémon GO does not guarantee that every AR mode works. Niantic’s general baseline for encounter AR is an iPhone 6s or newer with iOS 11 or later, or Android 7.0 or later on an ARCore-supported device. Android version alone is not sufficient: Niantic’s encounter AR requirements.
GO Snapshot has newer documented requirements: iOS 15 or later, and, beginning in March 2025, a 64-bit Android device that supports ARCore: GO Snapshot requirements. AR+ is a more advanced tracking mode and is not required for ordinary AR encounters.
- 32-bit Android hardware, rooted phones, jailbroken iPhones and beta operating systems can block support.
- Tablets or Wi-Fi-only devices may have incomplete location support.
- Niantic notes that minimum requirements do not guarantee compatibility with every model: device compatibility guidance.
If the requested feature is absent because the hardware or OS is unsupported, software troubleshooting cannot add that capability. Disable AR where the game allows it, use a static-background option, or use a compatible device.

- Spin PokéStops or throw Poké Balls automatically in Pokémon GO for hands-free gameplay (and Great Balls and Ultra Balls can be thrown too!)
Fix 3: Install or update Google Play Services for AR (Android)
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Play Services for AR.
- Install or update it, then restart the phone.
- Test Pokémon GO again.
Use the official listing: Google Play Services for AR. If Play Store reports that it is unavailable or incompatible, the phone likely lacks ARCore support. Do not sideload random APKs as a routine workaround.

- Move to a well-lit area.
- Point the camera at an open floor, tabletop or other flat surface.
- Pan slowly until the game detects the environment.
- Avoid dark rooms, reflective surfaces, dense grass, clutter and rapid shaking.
- Tap only after a placement indicator appears.
Remain stationary and scan from a safe place; do not look through the camera while crossing roads or entering hazards.
Fix 5: Update, restart and refresh game data
- Update Pokémon GO through the App Store or Google Play.
- Force-close the game.
- Restart the phone.
- Open Pokémon GO and select Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data.
- Test an encounter, Buddy AR and GO Snapshot separately.
Niantic’s troubleshooting guides recommend current software, restarting and refreshing data: Android troubleshooting and iOS troubleshooting. Refreshing can reset settings such as Adventure Sync, so verify them afterward.

Fix 6: Clear cache or app data
Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Pokémon GO > Storage.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen the game.
- If necessary, use Clear storage or Clear data.
Paths differ by manufacturer. Clearing data signs you out and removes local settings; confirm you know the correct Google, Apple, Facebook or Pokémon Trainer Club login first. Online progress remains associated with that account.
iPhone
iOS has no equivalent universal cache button. Force-close and restart first, then use Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Pokémon GO > Offload App and reinstall it, or delete and reinstall the app. Confirm your sign-in method before deletion. Niantic’s iOS guidance is at iOS troubleshooting.

Fix 7: Reinstall the official app and report the bug
- Confirm the account login method.
- Delete Pokémon GO.
- Restart the phone.
- Install the current official version from the App Store or Google Play.
- Grant camera and location access on first launch.
- Test a wild encounter and any affected AR feature.
Do not use modified clients or unofficial packages; Niantic lists unofficial or outdated versions among compatibility problems. If AR still fails, open the game’s Map View > Main Menu > Settings > Help and use the support/reporting option. Include the phone model, OS and app versions, affected feature, exact error and troubleshooting already attempted. See Niantic’s support instructions.

Targeted fixes for common symptoms
Black screen
Recheck camera permission, the global camera switch and Screen Time restrictions. Compare with the native Camera app, then restart, clear Android cache or reinstall.
Missing AR toggle
Compare a normal wild encounter with Buddy AR and GO Snapshot. A missing control can indicate feature-specific requirements, unavailable ARCore, unsupported 32-bit hardware or a temporary interface issue.
Pokémon float, vanish or never appear
Improve lighting, aim at a textured flat surface and pan slowly. A live camera feed can work even when environmental tracking cannot.

AR crashes or freezes
Update Pokémon GO and ARCore, restart, refresh game data, then clear cache or reinstall. Do not assume a particular update caused the issue unless Niantic identifies it as a known problem.
AR prompt keeps returning
Enable the relevant AR option under Main Menu > Settings. If you prefer not to use the camera, disable AR where that encounter or feature permits it; some play and photography options remain available with a static background. Details are in Niantic’s AR changes overview.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Pokémon GO without AR?
Yes. Where the encounter or feature allows it, disable AR and use the standard or static-background view. Some encounters no longer require AR.
Will reinstalling Pokémon GO delete my Pokémon?
No, progress is stored online with your account. Reinstallation removes local data, so confirm the correct sign-in method first.
Why does Android say ARCore is unsupported?
Android 7 or later is not enough by itself. The specific device must support ARCore; an incompatibility message cannot be reliably bypassed with an unofficial APK.
How do I report an AR bug?
In Pokémon GO, open Map View, Main Menu, Settings, Help, then the support/reporting option. Provide your model, OS and app versions, affected feature and exact error.
