If you own a capable gaming PC, start with Sunshine on the PC and Moonlight on your Android phone, tablet, iPhone or iPad. It offers the broadest game support and most control. Choose Steam Link for the quickest Steam-focused setup. If you do not own a gaming PC, GeForce NOW is the practical cloud alternative, provided your game and store are supported.
These are different technologies: Steam Link and Sunshine/Moonlight run games on your computer, while GeForce NOW runs them on Nvidia servers.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Where the game runs | Best for | Outside Steam | Gaming PC required | Cost and limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunshine + Moonlight | Your PC | Quality, flexibility, desktop-wide streaming | Yes, with configuration | Yes | Free; more setup and troubleshooting |
| Steam Link | Your PC | Simple Steam libraries and controller profiles | Sometimes, by adding non-Steam apps | Yes | Free; less elegant for other launchers |
| GeForce NOW | Nvidia’s servers | Playing without a gaming PC | Only supported games and stores | No | Free and paid tiers; catalog and latency limits |
For competitive shooters, rhythm games and other timing-sensitive titles, local streaming usually has fewer uncontrollable network variables. Cloud gaming adds the route between your device and a data center.
What “streaming PC games” means
Local streaming
Steam Link and Sunshine/Moonlight encode a game running on your own PC, send video and audio to the mobile device, and return controller or keyboard input. The PC must be powered on, sufficiently fast, and running the host software.

Remote streaming from home
You can connect to that same PC while away from home, but the host must remain available. Home upload capacity, carrier-grade or double NAT, firewall rules, public-Wi-Fi restrictions and distance all matter; a fast download plan alone is not enough.
Cloud gaming
GeForce NOW runs supported games on Nvidia hardware. You connect compatible Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PC Game Pass or Ubisoft Connect accounts, but owning a game does not guarantee that it is in the supported catalog.
Steam Link: the easiest setup
Valve lists Steam Link for Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi and other platforms. Its Remote Play system sends video and audio from the PC and returns input and multiplayer voice. See Valve’s Steam Remote Play page.

- Install Steam on the gaming PC and sign in.
- Leave Steam running.
- Install Steam Link on the Android or iOS device.
- For first pairing, put both devices on the same home network.
- Open Steam Link, select the detected computer and enter the displayed code in Steam.
- Run Steam Link’s network test.
- Pair a Bluetooth, USB or otherwise supported controller with the mobile device.
- Start a game from the Steam Link library.
Steam Link fixes
- PC not found: confirm both devices are on the same LAN, Steam is open and the router is not isolating wireless clients.
- Pairing fails: restart Steam Link and Steam, then enter a new code.
- Black screen: test the Steam desktop view, then try windowed or borderless mode and temporarily disable troublesome HDR.
- Controller fails: pair it to the phone and check Steam Input rather than pairing it only to the PC.
- Non-Steam game problems: add the program to Steam as a non-Steam game, or move to Sunshine/Moonlight for better launcher and desktop support.
Sunshine and Moonlight: best overall with a PC
Sunshine is the host; Moonlight is the client. Sunshine is self-hosted and supports hardware encoding paths from Nvidia, AMD and Intel, depending on operating system, drivers and GPU generation. Moonlight provides the Android or iOS interface. Read the Sunshine documentation and Moonlight setup guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSunshine documents Windows 10 or later, macOS 14 or later, and Linux baselines including Ubuntu 22.04+, Fedora 41+ and Debian 13+, with at least 4 GB of RAM in its minimum table. It recommends 5 GHz 802.11ac-class networking for host and client. Those are compatibility floors, not guarantees of 1080p/60 or 4K.
- Download and install Sunshine from its official documentation or release page.
- Open Sunshine’s local web interface and confirm the service is running.
- Install Moonlight on Android or iOS.
- Connect phone and PC to the same home network.
- Select the discovered PC in Moonlight and enter its PIN in Sunshine’s pairing interface.
- Test the desktop stream before launching a game.
- Begin at 1080p/60 with a moderate bitrate; increase resolution or bitrate only after stability is proven.
- Pair the controller with the mobile device unless your setup specifically requires host pairing.
Sunshine/Moonlight fixes
- No discovery: manually add the PC’s local IP and allow Sunshine through the firewall.
- Desktop works but games do not: inspect Sunshine’s applications and launch commands.
- Wrong monitor: select the intended display or use a virtual display; multi-monitor layouts are not automatically reliable.
- HDR trouble: establish a stable SDR stream first. Older games using Nvidia-specific NVAPI HDR can have limitations documented in Sunshine’s getting-started documentation.
- Blurry or delayed video: move off 2.4 GHz, reduce congestion, lower resolution, then adjust bitrate gradually.
- Remote connection fails: prove local streaming works first and use a secure remote-access method; do not treat exposed port forwarding as the only solution.
GeForce NOW: best without a gaming PC
GeForce NOW streams supported PC titles from Nvidia’s servers. Use the GeForce NOW service page and Nvidia’s how-to-play guide to connect supported stores and launch games.

Nvidia’s US marketplace listing observed August 18, 2026 showed Free (ad-supported, up to 1080p/60), Performance at $9.99 monthly or $99.99 annually, and Ultimate at $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annually. Day passes were listed at $3.99 for Performance and $7.99 for Ultimate. Prices, taxes, queues, session rules, promotions and regional availability can change; check the current marketplace.
For iPhone and iPad, Nvidia lists iOS/iPadOS 15.4 or later, at least 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps, 25 Mbps for FHD, and latency below 80 ms to a data center as a usable target. Android requirements include Android 7.0+, OpenGL ES 2.0+ and at least 1 GB available memory. See Nvidia’s system requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GeForce NOW fixes
- Game missing: check publisher support, exact edition, connected store and region.
- Queue or session concern: compare current free and paid policies rather than assuming unlimited access.
- Good image but delay: test latency to the nearest Nvidia data center; bandwidth is only one factor.
- iOS controller not detected: use a compatible Bluetooth or MFi controller.
- Keyboard-and-mouse game feels awkward: choose a controller-friendly title or a larger device; Android keyboard/mouse behavior varies.
Network settings that make the largest difference
- Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet whenever possible.
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone or tablet and avoid weak-signal areas.
- Start at 1080p/60. Higher resolution increases bitrate, decoding load, heat and the impact of packet loss.
- When stuttering appears, reduce bitrate or resolution before buying faster internet.
- Check ping, packet loss and consistency, not just a download-speed number. Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 does not eliminate congestion or poor backhaul.
Controllers and device fit
Touch controls are unsuitable for many PC games. A telescopic controller is convenient for a phone; a Bluetooth controller suits a tablet; strategy, simulation, MMO and competitive PC games may still need a keyboard and mouse. Check connector, phone-size range, case clearance, pass-through charging, mapping and Android/iPhone support for the exact model.
Examples include the Backbone One, models in Razer’s mobile-controller range, and the GameSir G8 Galileo. These are categories and examples, not universal winners.
Quick Recap
Android and iPhone differences
- Android: devices differ substantially in decoding hardware, refresh rate, thermals, controller support and Wi-Fi performance. Meeting an app’s minimum does not ensure a good high-resolution stream.
- iPhone/iPad: cloud services may use a browser rather than a native app. Safari suspension, screen locking, permission prompts, aspect-ratio bars and controller compatibility can interrupt play.
Choosing in one minute
- Own a capable gaming PC? Choose Sunshine + Moonlight.
- Mostly play Steam games and want minimal setup? Choose Steam Link.
- No gaming PC or do not want to leave one running? Choose GeForce NOW after checking catalog support.
- Need competitive latency? Prefer local streaming on Ethernet plus strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Play desktop-heavy games? Use a tablet or larger display with keyboard and mouse where possible.
