Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Ready or Not closes at the splash screen, returns to Steam, shows Unreal Crash Reporter, or crashes while loading a mission, start with a clean launch that disables mods. Then verify Steam files before changing drivers, renderers, or local data. This order is fast, preserves saves, and separates mod conflicts from damaged files, GPU problems, and software interference.
These steps target the Windows PC/Steam version. Xbox and PlayStation crashes require different instructions; for example, VOID’s v1.4.3a note concerned a PS5-specific plugin issue, not a Windows fix (VOID’s v1.4.3a notes).
Identify where the crash occurs
| Symptom | Most useful first test | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Steam shows “Preparing to Launch,” then returns to Library | Restart Steam and Windows; verify files | File, update, permission, or background-software failure |
| VOID/Unreal splash screen appears, then closes | Launch with no mods | Mod, dependency, configuration, renderer, or driver conflict |
| Unreal Crash Reporter opens | Record the crash ID and save the report | A crash occurred after the executable started; logs can identify the failing subsystem |
| Black screen or freeze before input | Disable overlays and test the other DirectX option | Display, shader, GPU, or injector problem |
| Main menu opens but a mission crashes | Try a vanilla mission with mods disabled | Map, AI, weapon, asset, or mission-specific data |
| Only normal mode crashes; clean mode works | Update or remove mods, then add them back individually | Outdated mod, dependency, or stale mod data |
If the failure began immediately after a game patch, graphics-driver update, Windows update, or mod installation, note that event before changing anything. VOID warns that updates can alter files on which community mods depend (VOID community resources; v1.4.3 FAQ and changelog).
1. Restart, then update the basics
- Exit Ready or Not and Steam completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows updates, Steam client updates, and a current stable driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU.
- Restart again after a driver installation.
Use the GPU manufacturer’s official download page, not a “driver updater” utility. If the crash started immediately after a driver update, test a clean driver installation or the previous stable release instead. Avoid beta, preview, and Insider builds while diagnosing the game. Steam’s launch guidance likewise recommends current Windows and drivers, file verification, disabling interfering software, and checking requirements (Steam troubleshooting).

2. Launch without mods first
This is the least destructive test for returning players and anyone who has installed mods. Steam’s startup selector or launch control may offer wording such as Play Safe Mode (No Mods) or Launch Clean Mods / Save Data. Labels can vary by build and Steam client.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Ready or Not and choose Properties.
- On General, look for the game’s launch-selection control or launch options.
- Choose the no-mods or clean-mods/save-data option when it is shown.
- Start the game and test the main menu, then a vanilla mission.
If clean mode works, close the game and leave mods disabled. Update or remove map, AI, weapon, framework, and dependency mods from their current sources. Re-enable one mod at a time, or in small groups, until the failure returns. A successful Steam verification does not prove that user-created mods or local configuration are harmless.
Some players report entering -safemode as a Steam launch option, but that is a community workaround rather than a currently confirmed official command (community report). Prefer the option exposed by the game itself, and never download replacement DLLs or “fix packs” from random sites.

3. Verify the installation in Steam
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Ready or Not → Properties.
- Select Installed Files. Older Steam instructions call this Local Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish replacing missing or damaged files, then restart Steam and test again.
Verification compares downloaded files with Steam’s manifest. It can repair an interrupted or damaged installation, but it is not a complete reset: it may leave mods, mod loaders, and local configuration untouched. Steam’s current terminology is documented in its launch guidance (Steam); older support material uses “Verify integrity of game cache” (publisher instructions).
If Steam repeatedly reacquires the same files, stop looping verification. Remove installed modifications, check drive health and free space, review security-software interference, and include the repeated result in a support ticket.
4. Test DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 when available
VOID’s published requirements list DirectX 11 (official PC requirements), while Steam launch menus and player reports may expose DX11 and DX12 choices. Treat renderer switching as a diagnostic test, not a universal fix:

- If the crash is graphics-related or occurs before the menu, try the other available DirectX option.
- Keep whichever mode launches reliably; DX12 is not automatically better.
- Record the GPU model, driver version, selected renderer, and crash text if only one mode works.
Unreal documents GPU failures involving Direct3D device loss and recommends using crash callstacks and logs to investigate them (GPU driver crash guidance; GPU-crash troubleshooting).
5. Disable overlays and nonessential software
Close or disable one injector at a time, then retest:

- NVIDIA GeForce Experience or AMD Adrenalin overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- OBS and other recording tools
- MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner and hardware-monitoring tools

6. Check security software, storage, and requirements
Review your antivirus quarantine and history for the game executable. Prefer a temporary, game-folder exclusion over permanently disabling protection; re-enable protection immediately after testing. Security software can produce false positives in some configurations (publisher troubleshooting guidance).
VOID’s published figures are:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4430 / AMD FX-6300 | AMD Ryzen 5 1600 / Intel Core i5-7600K |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 960 2 GB / AMD Radeon R7 370 2 GB | NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB or better |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 11 |
| Storage | 90 GB available | 90 GB available |
These are the publisher’s listed figures, and the Windows 7/8.1 entries are stale relative to modern support realities. Current Windows updates, compatible drivers, and additional free space still matter. Steam notes that systems near minimum requirements can experience launch and performance problems.

- Back up local saves and configuration folders before changing them.
- Rename the relevant Ready or Not local-data folder instead of deleting it.
- Launch the game so it can create fresh settings.
- If it works, restore files selectively until the problematic setting or data is identified.
Do not delete saves as a first step. The exact folder name and location can vary by build and installation, so use Windows search and confirm what each file contains before moving it. Community reports describe renaming or deleting local data, but they do not establish one universal, risk-free path (report 1; report 2).

8. Find crash reports and logs
Unreal crash reports commonly contain a crash identifier, crash type, call stacks, system information, and log output. Epic gives a typical packaged-game location as:
C:Users<Your Windows Username>AppDataLocal<Project Name>SavedCrashes
The project folder for Ready or Not may have a different name on your machine. If that path is absent, use Windows search for recent CrashReportClient, CrashContext, .log, or .dmp files. Preserve the Crash Reporter ID and the files created at the time of failure (Epic crash-report documentation).
When is a reinstall justified?
Reinstall only after clean launch, verification, driver/software tests, and a backed-up configuration reset fail. It is reasonable when verification repeatedly fails, the install directory contains persistent modifications, or support specifically requests a clean installation. Reinstalling is time-consuming and may not remove user-data or mod problems unless those are separately removed.

Check Steam and VOID announcements for the actual installed version rather than assuming that an announced update has released: VOID’s July 30, 2026 briefing described v1.5/1.5.1 as coming “in the coming weeks,” without confirming release status in the available material (development briefing).
Quick Recap
Quick decision tree
- Clean mode works: keep mods disabled, update or remove incompatible mods, then reintroduce them individually.
- Clean mode fails: verify files.
- Verification fixes it: damaged or missing base files were likely involved.
- It still fails: test drivers, DirectX modes, overlays, security software, and backed-up configuration reset; then collect logs and contact support.
