Backbone Pro review: It makes mobile gaming worth the hassle—if you use its best feature

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The Backbone Pro is worth its premium price for frequent mobile, cloud-gaming, and remote-play players who want a comfortable full-size controller that also works wirelessly with tablets, PCs, Macs, and TVs. It is overkill for occasional phone gaming, a poor choice for Lightning iPhones, and the wrong buy if Hall-effect thumbsticks or the lowest price matter most.

What problem does the Backbone Pro solve?

Touch controls hide part of the screen and are a poor fit for many shooters, racing games, platformers, and action titles. A compact telescopic controller fixes that, but small sticks and narrow grips can become uncomfortable during longer sessions. A conventional Bluetooth controller feels better but needs a phone stand or clip.

The Backbone Pro combines an integrated phone mount with larger controls, then doubles as a wireless controller for another screen. That is its central advantage—not simply adding buttons to a phone.

It does not improve a weak internet connection, add games to your account, make unsupported games compatible, or replace the console or PC required for remote play.

BACKBONE Pro Gaming Controller
  • PRECISION CONTROLS: Designed for all serious gamers across all platforms, The Backbone Pro gaming controller features full-size ALPS analog joysticks, a precision D-pad, tactile face buttons, remappable rear buttons, and ergonomic grips. Enjoy 40 hours of battery for wireless BLE play and docked smartphone gameplay that uses your phone's battery. With broad device compatibility, it offers a seamless, immersive experience across smartphones, tablets, computers, and more.
  • USE PRO IN 3 VERSATILE MODES: The Backbone Pro gaming controller offers three modes for flexible gameplay: Docked mode, where your phone’s battery powers the controller; Wireless mode, using BLE for untethered gameplay with any compatible device; and Wired mode, connecting via USB-C for low-latency performance on smartphones, tablets, and computers.
  • BACKBONE APP FOR ENHANCED EXPERIENCE: To get the full experience with your controller, download the Backbone App to launch all your games in one place. The Backbone App allows you to search for new titles, connect with friends, and keep your controller firmware updated. The app is optional for gameplay, but adds convenience and access to advanced features that you can enjoy with your Backbone Pro.
  • UNLOCK MORE WITH BACKBONE+: With Backbone+, you can connect and launch console games with cloud or remote play directly through the Backbone App. Additionally, Backbone+ transforms your mobile controller into a retro gaming hub, featuring the app’s built-in emulator. The Backbone+ subscription is optional, providing extra value for gamers who want the most out of their Backbone controller.
  • PHONE COMPATIBILITY + CASE SUPPORT: The Backbone Pro is compatible with iPhone 15 series or later and most Android smartphones (USB-C connector). Includes magnetic adapters for case support, ensuring this gaming controller for phone fits perfectly with your device, making it a versatile choice for all mobile gamers.

What the Backbone Pro is

The Pro is a USB-C telescopic controller with two distinct operating modes. Backbone lists it at $169.99 in the US on its standard product page; the Xbox Edition is listed at $179.99. Those prices were observed on August 18, 2026, and Backbone pages have shown inconsistent collection pricing, so verify the checkout total.

USB-C handheld mode

  • Insert the phone between the grips and connect through USB-C.
  • Backbone says the controller does not need its own battery charge in this mode.
  • The direct connection is intended to minimize controller connection delay.
  • Pass-through power can charge the phone while it is connected to external power; Backbone cites up to 30W when supported.

Charging details are documented by Backbone Support. Wired operation can reduce one source of input delay, but it cannot remove cloud or remote-play network latency.

Bluetooth wireless mode

  • Pair the Pro through Bluetooth Low Energy and use it without a phone physically attached.
  • Backbone claims up to 40 hours of wireless battery life, with a full charge taking less than three hours.
  • It can be used with compatible tablets, PCs, Macs, and smart TVs.
  • The battery powers the controller; it is not a power bank for your phone.

Backbone’s FlowState software is intended to make moving between screens easier, although the exact experience depends on the operating system, game, and platform. “Play on any screen” means compatible controller pairing, not automatic access to every game or service.

Controls, comfort, and portability

Backbone specifies full-size ALPS thumbsticks, two remappable rear buttons, textured grips, quieter buttons, and larger Hall-effect triggers. The triggers are Hall-effect; Backbone does not identify the thumbsticks that way. Reviews including Tom’s Guide’s coverage have criticized the lack of Hall-effect sticks at this price.

The app supports button remapping, joystick calibration, trigger sensitivity, and control profiles. Rear-button usefulness remains game-dependent: a title may not expose every input, and competitive games can restrict remapping or handle external controllers differently.

BACKBONE Pro Gaming Controller, Xbox Edition
  • UNLOCK THE NEW CLYDE OUTFIT IN FORTNITE: For a limited time, starting December 3rd, 2025, new Backbone Pro purchases and current Backbone Pro owners can unlock the Clyde Outfit in Fortnite.
  • UNIVERSAL USB-C SUPPORT: Built with universal USB-C compatibility, this controller for iPhone and android supports iPhone 15/16/17 and Android devices. Magnetic adapters provide a secure fit with or without a case, offering flexibility without extra accessories.
  • CONSOLE + CLOUD GAMING: Stream games directly from your Xbox console or PC, or jump into cloud titles without extra hardware. With this phone game controller, you can also access Apple Arcade and Steam Link, while the included Backbone+ trial gives you free instant games along with exclusive perks and discovery tools.
  • PRO-LEVEL DESIGN WITH 40-HOUR PLAY: The Backbone Pro Xbox Edition mobile controller combines full-size ALPS joysticks, tactile rear buttons, and an ergonomic Xbox-inspired grip for comfort. Play untethered via Bluetooth Low Energy with up to 40 hours of battery, or connect by USB-C for low-latency sessions.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE CONTROLS: Remap rear buttons and save custom profiles through the Backbone App to match your play style. This feature gives you more flexibility and precision, letting you adapt the Backbone Pro Xbox Edition for mobile gaming and any other session.

Whether the Pro is more comfortable depends on hand size, stick preference, phone weight, and session length. Its larger grips are an advantage for 30–90-minute sessions, while its extra bulk makes it less pocket-friendly than the Backbone One. Backbone’s launch announcement lists approximately 199g. A small phone can make the controller feel oversized; a large phone can make the combination top-heavy.

Case fit is not universal. Backbone includes magnetic adapters and lists tested cases for particular phones, including several Pixel 8 cases. Check the exact model, USB-C port depth, camera clearance, case thickness, and any wallet, grip, MagSafe accessory, or pop socket before buying. A separate Universal Carrying Case is listed at $29.99 on Backbone’s collection page.

Phone compatibility

  • iPhone: USB-C models, including the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 series referenced by Backbone, may be compatible.
  • Android: Backbone states Android 10.0 or later, with USB-C, is required.
  • Lightning iPhones, including iPhone 14 and earlier, are not compatible with the Pro.
  • Meeting the operating-system requirement does not guarantee physical fit or complete USB-C compatibility.

What you can play

Native mobile games

The Pro works with games that support external controllers. Backbone names Call of Duty: Mobile, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Genshin Impact, Stardew Valley, Roblox, Minecraft, Apple Arcade titles, and Netflix Games titles where controller support is provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a store listing as a guarantee. A game may be touch-only, require controller support to be enabled, recognize the controller only after its tutorial, or support only part of the button set. Touch-first puzzles, card games, and gesture-heavy games may gain little from the Pro.

Cloud gaming

Backbone lists Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna. The controller is only one part of that chain. You still need a compatible app or browser, the relevant subscription or game entitlement, and a network with sufficiently low latency and stable bandwidth. Screen quality, phone thermals, and battery drain also shape the experience.

With Backbone+, enjoy free instant access to a wide variety of games, enhancing your experience by letting you play immediately without paying for extra features. This gaming controller works out of the box. A Backbone+ subscription is optional and not required to play games.

Remote play

The Pro can control PlayStation Remote Play, Xbox Remote Play, Steam Link, and other compatible PC-streaming setups. Remote play streams a game from a console or computer; it does not supply that hardware. A PlayStation is required for PS Remote Play, and Backbone states that PlayStation Remote Play is not available on Android devices.

Backbone app and subscription costs

Backbone+ is not required to play games with the controller. The free app supports firmware updates, joystick calibration, button remapping, and related controller functions. Backbone+ adds unified game management, recommendations, streaming features, exclusive perks, and other premium functions; new users may encounter a free trial when opening the app.

Keep three costs separate:

  1. The controller purchase.
  2. Optional Backbone+ features.
  3. Separate game, cloud, or platform subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or a paid GeForce NOW tier.

Some services open their own app or browser, and compatibility can change when platform providers update their software.

Troubleshooting common problems

The phone or controller is not detected

  1. Remove the phone case and reinsert the phone without forcing it.
  2. Confirm the phone uses USB-C and meets the stated iOS or Android requirement.
  3. Restart the game after connecting the controller.
  4. Open the Backbone app, install available firmware updates, and run joystick calibration if needed.
  5. Test another controller-supported game to distinguish a hardware issue from game-specific support.

Buttons do nothing

The game may lack controller support, require a setting to be enabled, need a restart, or support only some inputs. Some games recognize a controller only after their opening tutorial.

Wireless pairing fails

Charge the Pro, enable Bluetooth on the target device, disconnect it from another screen, and confirm that the target supports the expected controller profile. Wired mode may be more reliable on a particular platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote play feels slow

Test the network before blaming the controller. Use strong Wi-Fi, place the host console or PC on wired Ethernet where possible, reduce router distance, avoid congested networks, and compare local remote play with cellular use. The comparison can identify whether the delay comes from the controller connection or the network.

Final verdict

The Backbone Pro is a genuinely more capable phone controller than the Backbone One, but its value depends on using the features that raise its price. Its strongest case is a frequent player who wants full-size ergonomics in handheld mode and a wireless controller for a tablet, computer, or TV. If that describes you, the Pro can make mobile and streamed gaming feel deliberate rather than improvised.

If you only need inexpensive plug-in phone controls, choose the Backbone One or a cheaper telescopic alternative. If you already own a good Bluetooth controller, add a phone mount. If you need Hall-effect sticks, own a Lightning iPhone, or mostly play touch-first games, skip the Pro. Backbone advertises 30-day risk-free returns subject to policy exclusions, so verify phone and case compatibility before relying on that safety net.
