For most PC gamers, Meta Quest 3 is the best VR headset for Half-Life: Alyx. Its pancake lenses, reliable inside-out tracking, capable controllers, and wired or wireless SteamVR options make it the easiest complete system to recommend. Quest 3S is the cheaper entry point, PlayStation VR2 is the strongest OLED-and-DisplayPort alternative, Bigscreen Beyond 2 is a lightweight enthusiast option, and Valve Index remains worthwhile mainly when bought used or heavily discounted.
The important distinction is that Half-Life: Alyx is a Windows PC SteamVR game. A headset alone is not enough: you also need a sufficiently capable gaming PC, SteamVR, and—depending on the headset—base stations, an adapter, a cable, or a suitable wireless network.

What Half-Life: Alyx requires
Valve says Half-Life: Alyx works with any SteamVR-compatible system: Valve’s VR compatibility page. Quest headsets therefore work by streaming the PC game; they do not run the PC version natively. PSVR2 on PC, Valve Index and Bigscreen Beyond are also PC devices.

Valve’s minimum PC specification
- 64-bit Windows 10
- Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600
- 12GB RAM
- Nvidia GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580 with 6GB VRAM
- Steam and SteamVR
These are startup requirements, not a promise of high settings, high supersampling or stable wireless play. A modern midrange gaming PC or better gives you more room for headset resolution and steadier frame times. Frame-time consistency matters more in VR than a high average frame rate. Laptop GPUs can also perform very differently from desktop chips with similar names.
Why the complete system matters
Budget for the headset, controllers, base stations where required, PSVR2’s PC adapter, a suitable cable, a replacement strap or facial interface, a battery solution for wireless Quest use, and possibly a router or access point. A higher-resolution headset cannot compensate for a GPU that cannot render its chosen resolution.
Best overall: Meta Quest 3
Meta Quest 3 offers the strongest balance of optical clarity, tracking, controllers, versatility and setup effort. Its pancake lenses keep a larger portion of the image clear than the fresnel optics in Quest 3S, which matters when reading labels, checking ammunition, searching shelves or aiming around cover.
Inside-out tracking avoids external base stations, and Touch Plus controllers are light and practical for Alyx’s weapons and object interactions. Quest 3 can also function as a standalone headset, giving it a useful upgrade path beyond PC VR.
How it connects to SteamVR
- USB Link: the most predictable baseline and a good way to diagnose performance.
- Air Link: wireless play through Meta’s PC software.
- Steam Link: wireless SteamVR streaming from the Quest headset.
Quest PC VR uses a streamed video path over USB or Wi-Fi rather than a native DisplayPort signal. Compression can be visible, and wireless play adds network latency, encoding load and battery drain. The standard strap is also less substantial than many buyers want for long campaigns.

Who should buy it
Choose Quest 3 if you want one headset that can play Alyx, support wired or wireless PC VR, avoid lighthouse hardware and still offer standalone games. Choose another option if uncompressed DisplayPort video or OLED black levels matter more than convenience.
Best budget route: Meta Quest 3S
Quest 3S uses the same basic PC-VR concept, compatibility and controller-tracking approach as Quest 3 at a lower entry cost. It is a sensible first headset when budget is the deciding factor.
The compromise is optical. Fresnel lenses and lower display resolution make distant details, weapon sights and small text less clear, with a smaller sweet spot and more potential glare. For a game built around inspecting objects, Quest 3 is the better long-term visual purchase if the difference is affordable.

PlayStation VR2 is compelling when contrast and a direct wired signal matter. Its OLED display and HDR-capable hardware can make dark interiors and bright highlights distinctive, while eye tracking and headset haptics add hardware sophistication. PC support is documented by Sony at the PSVR2 support page.
Required PC hardware
Sony’s PC setup calls for Windows 10 or 11, at least 8GB RAM, a compatible CPU and GPU, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.0 or later. Sony recommends an RTX 3060 or later or RX 6600 XT or later for best performance. The official adapter must connect directly to the PC, not through a USB hub.

You need the official PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 app. Sony’s U.S. launch announcement listed the adapter at $59.99 in 2024; treat that as a historical reference, not a guaranteed 2026 price: Sony’s adapter announcement.
PC is not a full duplicate of PS5 mode. Some console features are unavailable or implemented differently, so PSVR2 is best viewed as a capable wired PC headset with additional setup rather than a complete PS5-feature equivalent.

Best premium specialist: Bigscreen Beyond 2
Bigscreen Beyond 2 targets enthusiasts who prioritize a very light, compact PC-VR headset and premium image quality. It is a specialist component, not a complete kit. Unless you already own the ecosystem, you need compatible SteamVR base stations and tracked controllers.
Its personalized facial interface makes fit especially important. Confirm the facial-scan process, prescription-lens requirements, included accessories, shipping region, return policy and exact model before ordering. Sharing between users and resale are less straightforward than with a mass-market headset.
Beyond 2 makes the most sense for an existing lighthouse owner or someone deliberately budgeting for a complete enthusiast system. It is a poor choice if you want standalone software, family sharing or the fewest setup steps.

Best used native SteamVR option: Valve Index
The Valve Index still has an excellent interaction package for Alyx: wide field of view, high-refresh-rate modes, off-ear audio, reliable lighthouse tracking and Index Controllers with individual-finger sensing. Valve’s product information is at the Index Steam page.

It is no longer the automatic best headset in 2026. Resolution and lens clarity trail newer designs, and a complete kit requires base stations. Cable failures, controller wear and station faults can erase the apparent saving on a used listing. Buy one when it is in excellent condition at a substantial discount, or when you specifically want Index Controllers and lighthouse tracking.
Used-buying checklist
- Check both controller joysticks, triggers, grips and charging.
- Listen for base-station noise and confirm every station tracks.
- Inspect the headset cable, connectors, lenses and pixels.
- Confirm power supplies, mounting hardware and all required accessories.
- Check the facial interface and account for replacement costs.
Why optics matter in Alyx
The game repeatedly asks you to read small interfaces, inspect ammunition and healing items, search dark rooms and manipulate objects at close range. Prioritize edge-to-edge clarity, glare control, pixel density, contrast, field of view, refresh rate and correct IPD adjustment—not resolution per eye alone.
Lens type, eye position, software render resolution, compression and display persistence all affect perceived sharpness. A headset with more pixels can look worse if your eyes are outside its sweet spot or the PC is rendering below the panel’s potential.

For long sessions, evaluate weight distribution, facial pressure, glasses clearance, ventilation, cable placement, cleaning and replacement interfaces. Comfort is not just total grams: a poorly balanced strap can become painful faster than a heavier but better-supported design.
Wired versus wireless Quest play
Use wired Link when reliability comes first
- Latency and image quality are more predictable.
- Household Wi-Fi congestion is irrelevant.
- There is no wireless battery drain.
- It is the simplest troubleshooting baseline.
A cable can still catch on furniture, and Link remains Meta’s streamed PC path rather than native DisplayPort.
Use wireless when freedom is worth network tuning
Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet where possible, use a strong 5GHz or 6GHz connection, avoid mesh-node hops and stop other heavy traffic. Router placement, channel congestion, walls, bitrate and the PC’s encoder matter more than a Wi-Fi label alone.
Test wired Link first. Once the game is stable, try Air Link or Steam Link and compare. If wireless stutters, reduce streaming bitrate or render resolution, move closer to the router and test again.
Exact setup paths
Quest 3 or Quest 3S with wired Link
- Install Meta’s Quest PC software from Meta support.
- Install Steam and SteamVR.
- Connect the headset directly to a compatible high-speed USB port with a suitable cable.
- Accept the Link prompt inside the headset.
- Launch SteamVR, then start Half-Life: Alyx.
- If performance is poor, lower Meta or SteamVR render resolution before reducing every in-game setting.
If the headset is missing, remove hubs and extension cables, try another USB port, run Meta’s cable check, restart both devices and update headset firmware, Meta software, GPU drivers, SteamVR and USB drivers.
Quest with wireless Steam Link
- Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet.
- Install Steam and SteamVR on the PC.
- Install Steam Link on Quest.
- Pair Steam Link with the PC.
- Start SteamVR and then Half-Life: Alyx.
PSVR2 on PC
- Install Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 app.
- Connect the official adapter directly to USB 3.0.
- Connect a DisplayPort 1.4 cable directly to the PC.
- Connect and power the headset.
- Pair Sense controllers over Bluetooth.
- Complete the play-area setup in the PSVR2 app.
- Launch SteamVR and Alyx.
Valve Index
- Connect DisplayPort and USB.
- Install SteamVR.
- Mount and power the base stations according to Valve’s room-scale guidance.
- Pair Index Controllers.
- Complete SteamVR room setup and launch the game.
Bigscreen Beyond 2
- Confirm facial fit and prescription requirements.
- Install compatible SteamVR base stations.
- Pair tracked controllers.
- Connect the headset as Bigscreen specifies.
- Install SteamVR and complete room setup.
- Check tracking volume and controller occlusion before starting the campaign.
Troubleshooting image and performance
The game looks blurry
- Clean the lenses.
- Adjust IPD and reposition the facial interface so your eyes sit in the sweet spot.
- Test wired Quest Link.
- Increase render resolution only if frame timing allows.
- Compare SteamVR Home and another game to determine whether the issue is headset-wide.
Low render resolution, dynamic scaling, compression and an underpowered GPU can all look like a lens problem.
The game stutters despite a high FPS counter
Check SteamVR frame-time graphs rather than average FPS alone. GPU spikes, CPU limits, wireless congestion, encoder latency, overlays, background recording and excessive supersampling are common causes. Lower render resolution, close browser and overlay utilities, use the headset’s recommended refresh rate and test a cable to separate network problems from PC performance.
You expected Quest to run the game without a PC
The official game is a SteamVR Windows title. Quest supplies the headset; the PC runs the game. Valve’s listing gives the SteamVR and Windows requirements: Steam listing.

You feel motion sick
- Start with short sessions and teleport movement.
- Use snap turning and stop at the first sign of discomfort.
- Try a fan for directional airflow.
- Adjust fit and refresh rate.
- Use seated play where appropriate and never push through nausea.
Choose by player profile
- Easiest all-round purchase: Meta Quest 3.
- Smallest new budget: Quest 3S, accepting visibly weaker optics.
- PS5 owner or OLED enthusiast: PSVR2 plus the PC adapter.
- Lightweight premium enthusiast: Bigscreen Beyond 2, if you can fund the base stations and controllers.
- Existing lighthouse owner: Bigscreen Beyond 2 or a discounted Index, depending on whether modern optics or Index Controllers matter more.
- Wireless priority: Quest 3, provided your network can support it.
- Used bargain hunter: Index only after checking the complete kit and component condition.
- Underpowered PC: No headset can solve the problem; upgrade the computer first.
